How To Judge Your Road Position / Left Side Gap | Learn to drive: Basic skills

  • In the UK we normally drive on the left side of the road, but there is more to it than that - as our position within our lane is also important. Driving with the correct road position is important for safety and also helps traffic flow freely. Many new drivers find this difficult to judge, and find themselves accidentally driving off the edge of the road - so in this video, we will show how to position your car on a few different types of road.
    Video chapters:
    * 0:00 Introduction
    * 1:01 Why road position is important
    * 2:20 How to judge our road position
    * 3:40 Steering technique
    * 4:17 Wide 2-lane roads
    * 4:47 Narrow 2-lane roads
    * 5:31 Narrow road without road markings
    * 6:11 Single track road

    I passed first time with 6 minors. I paniced and thought i failed. The examiner made me do emergency stop and 3 parkings. He took me on hills, small roads, T junctions, dual carriageway and some forest roads. He also took me on a 50mph roads and alot of roundabouts. I watched your videos alot during lock down over and over again i made a huge note book and made notes it helped me prepare for my test. Thank you for making simple, quick and very useful vidoes you cover every incy bincy topics which is greatly appreciated 🙂

    I am on my 4th day driving in the UK coming from Canada. I could not have driven in the UK without Advance Driving videos. I just finished watching your “How to Judge Road Position” which couldn’t have come at a better time. I am getting more comfortable with roundabouts but I’ve hit a few left curbs with my rental. My worst experience was with a bus who had to move to the centre to get past park cars. I know the bus should stop for me because he is in my lane but we know who would win if I hit a bus. So the curb got a good hit. BUT the driving is getting better as we move onto Stratford upon Avon from Cheltenham.

    Such a great video, the reference point is so helpful as I always worry on road position, it looks basically that the centre of the windscreen lines with the curb, but obviously varies how far left depending on road width and slowing and moving left slightly for oncoming vehicles on narrower roads

      It ll be best if you make a video of driving in hilly roads,busy traffic with gradients etc with simultaneous coverage of left reference point(middle of dash board with driver head camera), decision making of crossing a narrow gap & other things of pre-planning on the road with Operating of all pedals,gear along with running commentry ......
      with a virtual driving experience ..

      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  Před 5 lety

      Thanks for the suggestion! It isn't very hilly where we live unfortunately, but we use the drivers eye view quite often in our videos so can see how it looks for us when driving. Of course you will need to find your own reference point, as it looks different for every type of car and size of driver. Have you seen our video 'No 1 tip for passing' as it covers how to forward plan?

    To be honest drivers can just look at the side mirrors to see whether they are centered on the road. If they can see the the gap between line on the side of the car and the dotted line that shows how you are positioned.

    The looking far ahead tip works like magic even on narrow country lanes, so I look further down the road at the centre of the lane. This even helps, when on the motorway or dual carriageway to keep myself centred. Will this work if I switch between a Fiat 500 which is a mini car to an Audi A8 or a Range Rover which is larger and wider in terms of dimensions? Even when driving on narrow country lanes, if I simply apply the rule of looking well ahead, will I be okay when driving along? Thanks.

      You will have to allow more space for a larger car, but if you drive carefully at first you’ll get used to it 👍🏼

    What tips do you have for staying centered in the lane when driving in areas with narrow lanes and lots of curves? I am finding that I'm drifting too close to the curb and also moving over way too much when there's an oncoming car, even though there's enough room for them to drive by.

      Once you have your reference point set (as shown in this video) try to stick to it. When there is oncoming traffic on narrow roads you need to ‘stand your ground’ and avoid touching the kerb - slowing down will give you more time to judge your position. Also, remember that the other vehicle will be doing the same - as they don’t want to hit you!

    @1.12 Does the two second rule not apply?
    Also on one side of a 3 lane duel carraigeway I'm doing 50mph in lane 1 and lane 3 slows down to 40mph is it legal for me to keep to my speed and pass those in 3?

      The two second rule should always apply! However when filming we sometimes have to drive a little closer to get acceptable footage, and we also crop the image to make it look closer than it was in reality. There is no law against ‘undertaking’ but it’s not recommended because you can’t trust the other car to stay in their lane.
