    "Faux steel bends" as they're also known, are an important skill to have in your arsenal of tricks as a lead guitarist. Not only can they provide you with an endless supply of snappy, twangy country licks, but they can also be used in a much more ambient, layered soundscape type of a way to add ethereal beauty to your playing.
    Volume swells are seen as something of a "dark art", but like anything, spend some time getting these movements into your muscle memory and before long you'll find yourself 'violin-ing" left, right and centre! ;)
    Aside from all of that, this is a good lesson for exploring triads and double stops too!
    (Lesson materials will also include my backing track)
    And as always, stick around til the end for gear talk and recommended listening 👌🏻

      i have so totally been there brother. i have an old original newburg, ny, built by ned, Steinberger i bought used back in the late 80’s as a travel guitar back when i was flying around on business but trying to practice in hotel rooms in between shit meetings…i also had that little Zoom amp/effects box that i ran my Sony discman into to jam along with stuff. so I had the Steinberger, which had a really great gig bag that it came with (those are actually really rare and hard to find now) mine is falling apart, but it had a really big accessory pouch in the front so I put the Zoom in there with my cables and then I always had headphones that I flew with to listen to music so i was set for “monitors”
      man that got me through a lot of missing my tele moments and it got me a lot of trouble going on vacation with two different wives lol

    beautiful stuff as usual alex. jim’s great. met him at a bar in midtown ny one day where was doing a brunch gig. i just went in to use the restroom while on a walkabout and immediately recognized him from my days in SF seeing him at this cool jazz/smericana/gypsy club he used to hold court at with his band “the ten gallon cats”
    i chatted w him for a bit while he was waiting to go back to the bandstand-super nice guy. around that same time I met Adam Levy in similar circumstances sitting at an outdoor café I think on 10th Ave. he saw me reading a guitar player magazine. I think he was either the editor for one year at that time or he was definitely one of the contributors and he came up and started chatting with me about guitar-also really super nice guy. i’ve watched recent interviews with Adam and it occurred to me. I think he was literally on his way to that Norah Jones gig when I bumped into him because he was super hyped up super excited and that’s not really his personality and he mentioned he was going to a really cool gig and he just moved back to New York to do it so that’s the story I’m going with!
    It’s cool how guitar brings people together.

    These are really beautiful, and you have a brilliant command of them. Great dissection, but my head is spinning…
    I have to dig into my Triads, get beyond the major/minor, and learn my seventh chords. Adding those tones to lead playing, keeps coming up, and I struggle to know where they are? Let alone, bending into them 😊
    That Telecaster is perfect.

    • @AlexFarranGuitar
      @AlexFarranGuitar  Před 2 měsíci

      You can do it buddy!.. just take it slow and be thorough as you map out your triads. Really put them to use right away or the knowledge will just vanish after a few days 👍🏻

    Hey Alex, really enjoyed the lesson! Never thought I could make my tele sound quite like my good friend's pedal steel until I saw this. I did have a question for you, if you will indulge me... How do you feel about using a volume pedal instead of the volume knob on the guitar for the swells? I have been trying the knob method, but struggling mightily. Is there anything that makes you think using a pedal could go awry? Cheers, keep up the great work.

    • @AlexFarranGuitar
      @AlexFarranGuitar  Před měsícem +1

      okay Josh, that's fair enough.. like I say, the pedal is fine for longer, slower playing but massively lacks the speed, precision and imediacy you get from using your hands. Also, I hate having to "need" more gear just to do a particular technique.. I want to get as much out of my bare hands as possible!.. the tele was designed with that very ethos.
