Please don't discount the dedication and hard work and the many, many hours of practice that have made Alexander the pianist that he is. He has perfected his playing over 10 years, and to reach his level at this young age as a tremendous accomplishment. To just credit "his gift" does a disservice to him and pianists everywhere who sacrifice and devote themselves completely to their music. Relying on one's "gift" will not result in this level of performance. It takes drive, determination and abandonment of everything else to achieve it.

I have not heard it before so I went on a youtube search to hear it in its entirety and have listened to 4 or 5 other pianists playing it, the best being by Hamelin (no live performance, only audio with the sheets given). I must say Hamelin's is good, but Alexander's is very much similar, maybe even better! This piece reminds so much of Rach music! In fact, I read in a comment on another performance that Rach thought very highly of Medtner's music. I hope that Alexander will perform this piece in the near future. I had tickets to the concert at Ravinia and intended to drive 8 hours to get there to see him ... and missed him last year in Boston as well ... I still hope to see him before I leave this planet and I'm 82, so I hope either he gets to the USA or I get to Russia!

...guess who..? both are Russians, the most appreciated rendition of the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 so far was that of the Sviatoslav Richter's Warsaw Concert, conducted by Stanislaw Wislocki and i am glad to see Alexander Malofeev's progression whom i follow since he was a kid and hope he would conquer the entire world with his emotional playing .

It's really nice, and also reassuring to see and hear him chat with a fellow musician and to enjoy doing so.
He must be given space to grow and blossom as a musician and as a person in his own way and in his own time.
For what it's worth,I'm really hoping he will perform the concertos of Bela Bartok sometime soon....think about that!

Don't be so daft. She is Mexican and interviewing in English. I read news and cope quite well with Polish, German, Italian, Vietnamese, Chinese names but have a lot of difficulties with African and French names. I look up the pronunciation, practice and then suddenly forget. Drives me nuts . Besides you mispelled 4 words and mafe a grammatical error in your comment. It is mean of me to say so. I don't know what your mother tongue is or whether you are dyslexic. I only mention it because you judged Alondra as terrible on the basis of her difficulty with his name ignoring the fact that she put him at ease in an interview in which he had to speak English !

She has conducted 100 or so orchestras including the Berlin Radio Symphony, Osesp ( Sao Paulo) and the London Philharmonic. Vienna Radio Symphony, Verbier Festival. Had a torrid time with Staatsoper Berlin with Zauberflote but was invited back promptly for a Tchaikovsky Ballet. Best known for her support of South American repertoire.
