  • In this video, I review the DeWalt FlexVolt 15” String Trimmer on our 35 acre property. I give it a stress test using the 6ah and 9ah FlexVolt batteries I had on-hand. I have been using Husqvarna trimmers for many years, and can honestly compare the two. The DeWalt trimmers and batteries can be found at the links below:

    I switched to an electric trimmer and blower two years ago. The other real benefit is being able to go out there and mow down any persistent stands of dried out weeds or wildflowers in the coldest day of winter if you wanted to. Try that with a gas one! So far so good for me with the electric.

      Thanks J Ned, I never thought of that! It certainly would make an interesting video! I've switched to battery operated tools back in the late 80's, and have slowly switched over as my corded tools burned out, and as battery technology has improved. I'll be giving the battery powered miter saws another look as I really need portability with that. When I'm working on a woodworking project, I want the miter saw right there where I'm working.
      Hmmm - there may be another review coming soon 😉

      I've been seeing a few reviews on this style of trimmer with the motor at ground level where they talk about it burning out. Dewalt now added trimmers with top-mounted motors, but the model you tested has a higher maximum RPM.

    You gave it a workout. Thanks for doing that i like it. I may get one. Would be a lot easier than the big stihl i got gas powered

      I would highly recommend it if you have the batteries already. Its nice to be able to just go out and trim at any time because of the quietness and because you know it's going to start! I'm keeping my big gas forestry trimmer as well for the big jobs. This definitely will not trim a 1/3 mile road! 😮

    I've been wondering about these trimmers for awhile now. I believe I have enough battery power (3 12ah), and will likely pull the trigger on it. I have the same issue with starting and mess from my gas trimmer, but the sound issue will be nice as well. I can trim early with something like this, then cut the grass after people wake up! I would need the same on you got. I have a lot to trim!

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  Před rokem +5

      That is exactly my thoughts! I always wait until 9 or 10 before trimming, then cut the grass afterwards. Now that we have a lot more to cut, I am cutting all day long! it would be nice to start at like 7 or 8 and get the job done at a reasonable time! I do think I'll be getting a 12 or 15 ah battery to round-off the big battery collection though 😊

    Hi Mojo, I liked everything about that DeWalt but as you say with a handle and a harness the price would turn into a nightmare,great video

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  Před rokem +5

      I agree - but it would still be cheaper than the gas alternative. It will be interesting to see the progression of these tools, but the size and weight of the batteries will always be a limiting factor 😑

    I have been thinking of switching over to electric lawn tools for quite some time. I have mostly dewalt tools, but I don't have any flex volt batteries. I think the smaller trimmer would be fine for my property, and I could probably get the whole thing done with one battery. Maybe a 12ah battery? You have me really contemplating making the move!

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  Před rokem +5

      I would make the jump. Like I said, the smaller trimmer with a battery is about the same as a smaller Husqvarna brush cutter. You can get a cheaper gas trimmer, but then you are stuck with a cheap gas trimmer 😉 having a couple large FlexVolt batteries around also opens up new tools that can be purchased as "tool only". I'm looking at buying a small miter saw for 'point of use' work. 😊

    I have an electric hedge trimmer, and I used to have an electric lawn mower, but both of them were corded 😆The corded lawn mower lasted less than one season. It was incredibly difficult to work with, and eventually I ran over the cord. I hated that thing! The hedge trimmer was a hassle as well, but it was manageable (and cheap!). I would love to have an electric lawnmower without a cord! The quietness is awesome! Does DeWalt make a battery operated lawnmower?

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  Před rokem +5

      They do make an electric lawnmower! It takes two normal 20v batteries, and they recommend using 10ah units. Claims to cut for 1 hour on a set of full batteries. The mower folds for storage as well! If I had a smaller yard, I would get one - DeWALT 20V MAX* Lawn Mower - amzn.to/3P0BEGl

    Do you have or have you ever used a Scythe for mowing down vegetation like that? I would be interested to know your thoughts concerning the scythe especially the European designs that are lighter and sharper.

      @@alangugino3255 The Amish still use them, but it's not practical for my property. I have 35 acres, and I trim around trees and things like that. A scythe just wouldn't work.

    Great review It helped me make a decision on which trimmer to buy.

    You could try and fit a harness on it connecting from the handle to the black hooking on the other end near where the battery sits. I was thinking of getting this and you helped me make up my mind.

      They sell a generic attachment for like $5.00 on Amazon. I'm going to try that, and see if I can use my commercial harness - which would be real sweet! It's a backbreaker as-is with a 9ah battery!

    You can probably switch the harness over to the new one. and the one I bought came with a 15 amp hr battery nice review. And have to remember a 60v - 20v battery 9 amp hr is only 3 amp hr using it at 60v

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thanks Robert! In actual use, I think I get about an hour out of the 9ah batter when trimming at high speed - which is just fine because it gets pretty uncomfortable at about that time. They really need a harness with these, and I think I'll try to rig one up. 🤔

    Thanks for posting. I wasn't sure if this would have the power to do what I want it to do. I have some thick stuff on a hillside that I clear. You should try add a darwin grip handle to your trimmer. Adds a little weight to the trimmer but it is a total back saver.

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  Před 10 měsíci

      Thanks Todd! I'll look-up the Darwin grip handle and see if it will work. I've used brush cutters with handlebars and a harness. They were heavier but the harness handled that, and they were much easier to use.

  • @MichaelJosephJr934
    @MichaelJosephJr934 Před 2 měsíci +1

    Can you put a handlebar set up on it?

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  Před 2 měsíci +2

      I believe so. I ordered a generic attachment ring, and will give it a try. There is not much room on the handle, but I have the harness from my big Husqvarna forestry brushwhacker, and will try to use that. I'll post an update.

    Get the genuine DeWalt (full size) guard & you will not get any grass on you......

    • @PlanetMojo

      I'm sure that is true. I used this all last summer with this tiny guard, and barely got any grass on me - with my Husqvarna brushwhacker, I get covered head to toe!
