  • In this video, we discuss the importance of accuracy in structural calculations. Structural calculations are used to determine the strength & stability of a structure & are an essential part of the design process. We will cover the impact of making assumptions about loads, materials, and models on the precision and accuracy of calculations. It is important to note that precision refers to the number of digits used in a measurement, while accuracy refers to how close a measurement is to the true value. We also discuss the concept of significant figures & how they are used in determining precision. Additionally, we discuss the importance of rounding off to standard sizes to ensure compliance with industry standards & safety for the structure & its users. This video is an introduction to the topic & aims to provide a basic understanding of the importance of accuracy in structural calculations.

Great content but the more precise and accurate the calculations, the more costly structure will be does not sound right to me. Engineers can over-estimate loads or oversize members costing the clients with more material than they need. One reason of precision and accuracy is to avoid that no?

You raise a valid point. It is true that engineers can sometimes overestimate loads or oversize members, which can lead to unnecessary costs for clients. However, it is also important to ensure that the structure is safe and able to withstand the loads it is designed for. Precision and accuracy in calculations can help to prevent costly mistakes and ensure the safety of the structure. It's a balance between cost and safety. Ultimately, it's the responsibility of the engineer to make sure that the structure is safe while also being cost-effective.
