    One of the best things with the Wahoo devices is that they introduced me to Ride with GPS. It's a million times better than Strava once you get a few routes created. It simply just works and it's so easy to do. This isn't a dig on Garmin or anyone else, just Strava (I'm a premium member). Their route building game has fierce competition and right now RwGPS is kicking their butt. Kamoot seems to have a better automated route builder than both of those sites, but it is too finnicky right now to recognize gravel bike paths as being legit routes. You have to select mountain bike for it to recognize smooth gravel paths as a route which is ridiculous because then it uses mountain bike paths as routes also.
    Strava is great for the social abilites.
    RwGPS is great for route building.
    Kamoot is okay for automated touring route building.
    Strava does allow you to export a ride, and then RwGPS can build turn by turn routes from that if you want. There is video on their site how to do it.
    I don't work for anyone, I'm just a big fan of RwGPS because like most people, it's like, why do I have to do this, I like my Strava. And then I used RwGPS and now I'm like why do I have to use Strava, I like my RwGPS. No facebook-ish stuff on RwGPS, so... I use both equally now.

    I have been using the Wahoo RFLKT+ sync'd to RWGPS on my phone for several years. It delivers Turn By Turn route guidance including audio instructions into an earpiece. Our club publishes route cue-sheet instructions using RWGPS and all I have to do is copy it on to my RWGPS app on my phone, initiate the route and turn on my RFLKT+. Easy to create my own route too. T by T for almost every organized century ride is available on RWGPS. I take my phone with me anyway (who doesn't). A subscription to RWGPS is $5 a month. Great deal. the RFLKT+ was the best bike computer ever invented. Was a crime that they discontinued it.

    thank you, I know this video is old however you just saved me a shed load of time and bother so thanks. I don't use the navigation feature as I mostly go where I have previously been. Going on a ride organised by someone else and they sent me the .gps files, couldn't get the turn by turn to work. Now I know why. Can't read it without reading glasses anyway. I am old and simply memorise the route - old school.

    Shane - great video on an issue I have been tracking. As a Strava Premium member, I really wish Strava would fix its export of route data to support turn-by-turn on Wahoo. Come on Strava - how hard is it to export a few more existing data fields for the sake of your Premium service members?! I do not want to subscribe to yet another service for this functionality.

  • @D.Eldon_
    @D.Eldon_ Před 7 lety +1

    I switched to the BOLT last spring and have been very happy with it. I've never had to re-route so the inability to do that when using the BOLT in stand-alone mode is no problem. But I empathize with those cyclists who frequently travel in unfamiliar areas and need the feature. I'm a RWGPS Premium member so I understood the bit about navigation cues. I ran into the same problem when I imported the gpx data for a new century last month -- the gpx file had no navigation cues. Fortunately, it's fairly easy to redraw the route in RWGPS because you can convert the imported gpx route to a sort of template that remains visible on the map. Then you simply trace the route on top of the template, creating an anchor point just before each turn. It only took a few minutes to redraw a 103-mile route with lots of turns. And I like the control it gives me because I can manually adjust the route any way that I want. I can even add navigation cues. During the century (it was the Holland 100 in Michigan, USA), the BOLT performed flawlessly with navigation.

    • @SurpriseMeJT
      @SurpriseMeJT Před 6 lety

      Try exporting from RidewithGPS as a .tcx file, which includes the cue-sheet. Your GPS will simply read the cue-sheet as it is (without any real intelligence like navigating from a map).

    I just bought a Bolt and am glad I came across this video while doing some research on it. Funny enough, in the years that this thing has existed, this seems to be the only in-depth video/blog done on this computer's navigation interface. I really appreciate the time and effort you put in.
    I'm giving it a go tomorrow on a short and familiar ride to see if I can get it to work using Komoot (I purchased the World Map package). Wish me luck.

      @@gplama Inhave given it a try a few times now and it has worked perfectly. Although, I tried exporting the files from Komoot to my Wahoo for offline use and the turn-by-turn cues didn't come with. I only get the bread crumbs. But when used online, everything works great, even in areas where cell coverage is terrible.
      I've done a few rides that have been 5 hours plus and neither the battery on my phone nor the battery on the Wahoo Bolt have come close to dying so I dont think Inhave much to worry about. Again, thanks for the tips.

    Very very very good research and info, I don't bother with maps to much but very nice to know my Wahoo head units limitation.
    I personally believe these designers are going the wrong way, set up by phone is cool, but if a cycle computer could work completely independent, i.e. Fit your sim card in, you wouldn't need to carry your phone. Ride cleaner and light, the unit provides all basic communication and data. Calls and text done from the head unit if required. This would be a super piece of kit!!

    Good info thanks Shane. First ride outside with my Bolt today. Route planned with Komoot and it worked flawlessly. Will try importing a Strava route into Komoot first to see if the turn by turn data is added. My only slight gripe is the small guidance text in negative i.e. White on a black background when not on the map screen and the actual turn instruction is a little late when riding at 20mph (on or just beyond the point at which you should have turned)

      It's a function we've come to expect from any 'navigational' GPS for sure. It makes sense after I got my head around the limitations. It's something I guess they could work on via software/firmware. I guess we'll see in the future.

      i wonder if they could make a feature within the companion app that would allow you to download a regional map to the unit (instead of global) the way Garmin has it that would allow more space for metadata to be included, then maybe it could work.

      My 810 would always try to take me back to the start of the ride if I went off course rather than navigate the quickest way back onto the course. Very frustrating.
      For me, not being able to re-calculate isn't a problem. If I go off course the LED's at the top start flashing red to tell me I'm off course. I change to the map page and follow the map back onto the course. It's not TBT but works really well for me.

    I use Wahoo in combination with komoot, which I quite like. With komoot you can just drop a gpx file into their website and they will calculate the turn by turn route for you. It isn't free, I know, but it adds the benifit that komoot knows quite well what kind of road surface the route contains. It isn't 100% accurate, but never with sand road disasters. The only time I really had to go off my planned route was during a 120km trip to a friend in another city. A quick view on the map and I knew how to get back onto my route, it wasn't a huge problem. Maybe this is also due to the fact the Netherlands (where I'm from) has bicycle paths everywhere so it's easy to take a small detour and get back onto where you planned to ride.

    Agree that Strava's route builder is easy, simple to use and probably has the best layout of any route builder on the net, however is rubbish when it comes to export. Using a Garmin 820, I found Strava routes would pause mid ride and the DTG would stop counting down. Same route in RWGPS or Garmin Connect was fine. I think I prefer my 820 for now. The Bolt probably wins on everything else except the ability to provide on the fly turn by turn nav.

  • @Cycling.Doughnut
    @Cycling.Doughnut Před 5 lety

    I have been using Garmin Edge before. Used courses to load onto the device, those were created in Garmin Connect service. After changing from Garmin to Wahoo, I simply exported the courses, as GPX files, and imported onto Komoot. Komoot synced with Wahoo device, and I also had turb-by-turn navi. Also need to remember to have the routes created in the free region in Komoot in order to sync with Wahoo. For routes created outside this free region you need to purchase that particular region, or simply get the world wide for 30 Euro (one time payment), which is not bad if you travel a lot in other parts of your country.

    Shane, you were correct before that all you had to do was upload a gpx make it a route and all the cue sheets where in the file. RWGPS now want to charge $6 a month to get the tracing feature to convert the gpx > Route and get cue sheets.
    I just rode a sportive yesterday and no TBT nav. Gutted as some idiot switch a sign after a food station. luckily the breadcrumb showed the correct way.
    After watching your video I looked at a previous route I've ridden and the cues were missing.
    www.komoot.com is the other service that works with cue sheets. Simply Import the GPX as Import to plan a route. Job done! Guess I will be using that from now one.
    However, as a Strava Premium member, they should be adding cue sheet support.
    My other query is that you said the elevation profile can be seen on route mode, my Elemnt has two seperate pages "Climbing & Map", I would love the map & elevation profile on the same page.

    All of this is documented, no need to be dramatic about. Before I purchased the Bolt I knew exactly what the limitations & possibilities on TbT-nav would be. See support.wahoofitness.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000359584-How-do-I-use-Turn-by-Turn-on-my-ELEMNT-Bolt
    By the way: Ride-with-GPS has a premium (payed) function to convert an imported route (from any source) into a route with cue-sheet. I am not using it (aka refuse to pay for another service), just hoping one day Wahoo will come out with their own routing-solution in the cloud that I can upload a route to and get a cue-sheet back. I requested that as a feature :-)
    Another feature I requested from Wahoo is an option to automatically show the map-page when a cue pops-up. In that way the map & crumb-trail could help you to make the right turn. Of course after the turn the page should switch back to the previous page with the stats you like to have in front of you when riding.
    Hint: you can sync multiple Bolts with 1 RwGPS-account. In that way only 1 person needs to create the route and all others in your riding-group can benefit. Of course this will only really work if you do not use RwGPS for tracking your rides. But heee that is why we use Strava, not?

    • @gplama
      @gplama  Před 7 lety

      The basics are documented. That's all. I wanted to know a lot more than just the step by step how-to. I wanted to know why we had to use that process. Along the way I learnt a lot more about the Elemnt and a few of the limitations on their map/navigational implementation. I shared that information here. Dramatic? Mate, I was pretty pissed off over the whole thing when "Just use RideWithGPS" still didn't work. I think I was quite positive in the video. I can imagine others have had the same experience. Let's hope the information here helps.

      The info you 'need to know' is published. It's the deeper understanding that I set about obtaining, and what I talk about here. The reasons companies don't go to this this level is because it pulls the mask off and does show some of the limitations that may not be able to be addressed with just firmware/software.

    Great video Shane - I've been enjoying lots of your content recently! I have a quick question, do you personally buy everything you review, or do brands like Wahoo send you products to test? I'd really like to review something like the Elemnt Bolt for an upcoming Everesting challenge, and get into more gear-related types of outdoor content... though at this stage, I'm not really sure if it's worthwhile reaching out to brands for support. In any event, keep up the great work! :)

    • @gplama
      @gplama  Před 7 lety

      It's a combination of both, depending on the availability here in Australia. There's a lot of things we get months after release in the US/UK/EU which I get fast-tracked, which is nice. If between the lines you're asking about editorial influence, it's all mine. I've been blogging similar content for around 10 years, but given CZcams are where the eyes are, this has really taken off. Not much has changed though, I'm still just a passionate cyclist working my way through the technology, and helping others demystify it. It's that track record that's opened doors. As for reviewing elevation data from head units..... all the best. That's a beast of a topic that's more art than science. :)

    Lama, great vid, thanks. I have been using Elemnt Bolt for about 4 months now and find route nav sufficient for rural cycle navigation. Just cycled an endurance ride of over 100miles into Central London UK using route nav. I have Bolt sound switched on and it buzzes and lights up if I go off route.
    I am of a certain age and my eyes are no longer 20 20. But I can see, follow and react to the breadcrumb route display on elemnt without my glasses whereas I can not read turn by turn instructions whilst hoofing it - eyes are glazed and can not focus enough without glasses.
    What WOULD BE HANDY would be if Elemnt could automatically bring me back onto the route I planned if I make a mistake - not sure what you call this but most car navs do this. Am I right in thinking neither elemnt or Garmin do this?

    Shane, thanks for this and this has the potential to be a top video, but there's way too much talk.... Sorry! If you could guide through the steps by way of a video, this would be the best video for the turn by turn nav online and you could also get Wahoo to pay you for what they can't do.... It's super frustrating I can't get the turn by turn working despite uploading the gpx file to the wahoo app..
    For what is supposed to be a top end head unit, it's adoption/usability/documentation on the wahoo website is somewhat limited!

    From memory you get a little more than your current location from GPS although the extras don't help directly with navigation (time, satellite positions, predicted positions..). Funny how long this stuff has been around and how it's still a bit clunky. I tend not to notice usually as I first played with tracking on maps in '98 or 9 with a Garmin etrex summit, Palm IIIc and a spliced serial cable to connect them. It's come a little way :-)

      Indeed. But watch out, there's currently a bug with Komoot→app→the device: If you reverse a route in Komoot, rename or not, and sync it with app to upload it to your device, it won't update it on the device. So, always plan and upload alternate routes in advance for now.

  • @richrider4830

    To get turn by turn directions from a Strava route you have into a Wahoo Elemnt from a desktop browser do the following: login to Strava and go to My Routes on a desktop browser, choose the route, and export it to a GPX file. Create a Komoot account. Login to Komoot on a browser. Click your name. Click Tours / Planned and click the Import a GPS File button and choose the GPX file you exported from Strava . Pay a one time fee of $30 to Komoot for their World Maps (you do not need the premium subscription). Maps created in Komoot outside your free home zone will not appear on the Elemnt unless you pay for World Maps or other zones. Go to the Elemnt app on your phone and choose Profile and then Connected apps and connect to Komoot with your Komoot login and password. The next time you pair the Elemnt with your phone you will be able to choose the Komoot route you just created (you may have to scroll thru other routes to find it) . Komoot automatically adds turn by turn to imported GPXs. This same process will not work with RidewithGPS because it does not add turn by turn direction queues to imported GPX files. RidewithGPS does add turn by turn to routes you manually create but not imported ones.
    You can also do the same Strava - Komoot turn by turn process on your phone. Install the Strava to GPX app on your phone. Use this app to export a GPX from your Strava route to your phone. Link the Strava to GPX app to Strava account with login. Choose the GPX option which leads you into Strava. Navigate in the Strava menus to rides or My Routes and choose the route to export. Use the Strava to GPX's GPX button to export the GPX file to your phone. Open the Komoot app on your phone and login. Go to Profile Tours / Planned and click the Import and choose the file you just exported from Strava to GPX . The route will then show on the Elemnt the next time the Elemnt syncs via Wifi or your phone.

    Seems like a lot of work just to get turn-by-turn. I know there are some units that are using Android OS (like Karoo) using Google Maps but I would see this would kill battery life as it does with any other phone.
    And idea that would be good to have is tethering. Just like you'd get SMS notifications through your head units via BT, but instead GPS turn-by-turn notifications. It would seem more appropriate if your phone had all the data and just sends all the data via BT to the head unit versus having the head unit contain all the data.

    I ordered mine on 20th of July. Turn by turn directions was mentioned on their website in features list (TURN-BY-TURN NAVIGATION WITH KOMOOT AND RIDE WITH GPS ROUTES).
    I had a GPSMAP 64s before but Bolt is easier to use and phone and wifi sync is a nice feature. The 64s is too bulky for a bike in my opinion. When I missed a turn during an mtb ride in the forest rerouting was not too helpful for me. In town it is a different story.
    It would be nice if Wahoo changes Google maps to Openstreetmap in their app (take me anywhere). It is much more detailed. Google maps almost useless off the tarmac.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  Před 7 lety

      Yes, it lists those on their site. But simply using those services isn't the answer. You need to use those services AND ensure they contain cues. I do like using OSM on the Garmin, it's crazy detailed.

      Yes, but it'll only sync to the Elemnt/Bolt if you've 'unlocked' the region maps you're using. Then there's the issue of very limited global mapping area support from Komoot. eg, Australia isn't an option.

    Hey Shane, been watching your channel for a while. Are you able to revisit this Wahoo - in particular the Wahoo Elemnt Roam and it's ever growing list of problems? Foreinstance, for anyone bike packing or ride long distances it often crashes mid-ride, anything above and 300km and it'll freeze and you will have to perform a hard reset and wait forever whilst it recovers the activity and then reload the route again. It is so so annoying and their customer service won't give an answer of when it will be fixed, myself I've been waiting since July, but others have been waiting longer. It's about high time they fixed the Roam.

    I really like your video reviews Shane, but in this case I can't believe you didn't already know this. After 5 mins research before buying one, I knew you need to use Ride with GPS or Komoot to get turn by turn. It's there half way down the page on the Wahoo website.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  Před 7 lety

      +Paul Skinner There's the basic detail but no explanation. I want to understand and not just accept the odd behaviors like Strava not working with cues, or why when I did use RideWithGPS to create the route (via GPX import) that it still didn't work. And why can't it ever re-route? I now have an understanding, not just answers to regurgitate. We're 12 months down the road since it was launched ( turn by turn) and none of these have been added or updated for a better user experience!? I had ignorant faith they just may have.

    • @paulskinner599
      @paulskinner599 Před 7 lety +1

      In terms of understanding why Strava won't route with cues, I agree. Its annoying that you need to sign up to another service to make full use. My point being however you start the video by saying "The details I wish i had of known" and then go on to talk about your experiences with Strava maps on the unit. You imply that you had no idea this was the case, something that 5 mins research could of easily answered.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  Před 7 lety +1

      +Paul Skinner Yes, I had no idea it was this difficult for the end user (me). Wahoo sync routes with Strava, so I didn't expect it to give me a basic map overlay only. Then when I did use RideWithGPS,
      It still didn't work. So I wanted to know why. Then when it had no re-route, I wanted to know why. I was and still am frustrated with that process. So this is the information I wish I had of known. If everyone knows this already or figured out all the intricacies and accepted it in a few minutes, great. That wasn't my experience, and that's what my CZcams is all about, my experience... and sometimes helping others not make the same mistakes.

    • @henderthing
      @henderthing Před 7 lety +2

      FWIW--creating routes in Strava is abysmal compared to creating them in RWGPS. Missing bike paths, roads Strava won't let you route through, etc. On RWGPS you can see cumulative elevation as you go, and there are multiple map overlays in case one map won't let you route somewhere.
      Calling that "this difficult for the end user" seems like a bit of an overstatement to me. Worked with no problems the first time I tried it.
      I stopped using Strava to create routes long before I got my Elemnt for the reasons above. Also--you'll notice at the top of the page, it's still a "beta" product.

    • @bikerjk1205
      @bikerjk1205 Před 7 lety

      Totally agree. I had no trouble using RWGPS to download routes with TBT to the Wahoo Elemnt. Moreover, I used navigation on the Elemnt without any problems or need for re-routing. The reason you need re-routing with Garmin is that navigation is so poor you often go off route.
