    Great video Shannon, glad you didn't skip any steps since they critically save problems which you can encounter when using the combination of products. Just the weight of the product alone changes the game on doing the project with less strain not directly applied to use the product. For instance, getting the product from the store to the site, then moving the product around easily in the work area. Thanks for a great video.

    Hey Shannon! - This is a timely video as I've never worked with Kerdi-board and want to use it to build my shower stall.
    Mike Holmes talks about Kerdi all the time but your video is a far more detailed 'how-to' & easy to follow along with.
    Another thing: I have never seen the preformed 'shelf' / niche piece & that is a great idea. Would make the prep for tile go much faster!
    I am very surprised that the Kerdi-board doesn't need to be put up over drywall given that it's styrofoam cored!

    Shannon, I live in north Florida. I’m in the process of shower make over in our master bedroom bathroom. I see that you have plastic in between the insulation and the Kerdi board. The old shower was a three piece prefabricated unit. I’m going with tiling. I purchased the shower kit. So the one side of the shower is on the exterior wall. So I used some pink foam for insulation. I was hesitant on using the fiberglass type insulation on top of the pink foam, sorry I don’t remember what is called, anyway the reason for the hesitation was I didn’t want to get the fiberglass insulation to get wet and make a huge mess down the road. So if I go with it, do I need to put some plastic barrier between the insulation and the Kerdi board? Thanks for your advice and videos. I have been enjoying them for a few years.

    I can't tell you how many times I've measured and transferred those measurements to a piece of sheetrock and got the holes in the wrong location. I can more accurately tell you how many times I've gotten it right: never. I switched to marking the x and y on the sheet from the marks where it's going to go (with blue tape transfers on the walls and ceiling locating the fixtures). I seem to get that right within an acceptable margin every time.

      @@HouseImprovements thanks for your reply. The theory is that, installing tiles over thin set, over roll on moisture membrane(redguard), over cement board, over the plastic vapour barrier, may cause condensation between the cement board and the plastic vapour barrier. The moisture may be trapped with no ability to dry, causing potential for mold or rot. Seems that many "experts" refer to this as a "moisture sandwich ". Is there some truth to this, from your perspective, or are we DIYers here in the Canadian prairies just being misinformed?

      If you live where a vapour barrier is required it is needed on the warm side of any exterior wall or ceiling that has a warm and a cold side. You may be confusing this with a plastic barrier that some people THINK they need to use behind shower walls to control moisture from the shower. In this video what you seen on the wall was a air/vapour barrier not a form of moisture control for the shower wall. We can discuss this more in the forum if you want to ask more about it.www.house-improvements.com/forums/

      Thanks for answering me! I understand what you’re saying. Here is a link to a Sal Dilblasi video czcams.com/video/NyGjGepUVqo/video.html where he doesn’t install a vapour barrier behind the schluter. I asked him and he said that there was no need to install it behind Kerdi.

      I have a feeling that these guys don't need vapour barriers where they are since there was not even insulation covering that concrete wall below the wood wall.?

    Why do you need the Kerdi band on the caulk? Its sealed either way.

    • @HouseImprovements

      It is recommended and good practice to make sure that bottom seal is good.

    While it is certainly a good product the amount of extra sealing with the strips is no different to what I did with cement board/durock on my shower and at less cost.

      Andrew Carr kerdi is way better, lighter, and non permeable.

      If you use cement board it really still should be water proofed before tiling with something like Red Guard . And this is so much easier to move and cut.

      A 3x5 Kerdi board costs about $35. Same sized cement board $10. So... everyone is going to want to, and possibly should be using Kerdi, but the cost will determine what's used for a lot of people.

    why not just use a cement backarboard?

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  Před rokem

      It needs to be water proofed after install before adding tiles, this saves that step.

    Kerdi acts as a vapor barrier, so you didn’t need to put up a standard drywall vapor barrier.

    Kerdi is a nice product however, the level of attention and expertise required to install properly totally takes it out of production work this is custom only.
    I could have tile that tub in thinset in the length of time that you have taken to prep it. No offense, just stating the obvious

      @armychris9148 Před 5 lety

      Richard Harris you still have to use some type of hardie board which is even heavier to work with and stuff like that so wouldn’t it make it a similar install time ?

    • @richardharris492
      @richardharris492 Před 5 lety

      @@armychris9148 no, you're saving 45 lbs I can carry that in 1 trip, not much time saved

      U still have to do all those steps with dura rock plus u have to red guard it before u tile. So I don’t see how u could do it faster.
