  • Ioannina, Greece ( Ιωάννινα, Ελλάδα ) - What to see in Ioannina
Ioannina, or Yannena, is one of Northern Greece's most atmospheric cities. Built on the banks of Lake Pamvotida, it is a place full of history and art. The city is fascinating and ideal for vacations throughout the year. Ioannina has everything: critical archaeological sights, a lake and a tiny island in its middle, surrounded by mountains, intense nightlife and exquisite traditional cuisine. Ioannina is also known as the city of silversmiths and a gastronomical paradise. Ioannina is a unique blend of history and modernity designed to cater to tourists worldwide. For centuries, Christians, Jews, and Muslims have coexisted in the walled, oldest part of the city. Even today, Ioannina boasts of its cobblestone streets and intriguing architecture. As you explore these atmospheric streets, you will discover several fascinating attractions that will capture your attention.
The castle town of Ioannina is the oldest Byzantine fortress in Greece and is one of the few castles still inhabited. Some crucial monuments inside its walls are the Its Kale Acropolis, where you will see the Fetiche Mosque, where you will learn about the story of Ali Pasa and its role in the history of the city. The Fetiyie mosque was built at the highest point of the Acropolis, where, according to historical sources, the metropolitan church of Archangel Michael had previously stood during the late Byzantine period. The Fetiyie mosque became the religious centre of the Acropolis throughout the 18th century. Its current form is the result of the restoration works carried out during the reign of Ali Pasha from 1795 onwards. In front of the Fetiyie mosque is the tomb of Ali Pasa and his first wife. His decapitated body was buried there in 1822, next to his spouse, Emine. Other sites worth visiting are the Byzantine Museum, which has an extensive collection of Byzantine icons, the ammunition depot, and a Byzantine silversmithing collection.
Other exciting sites inside the castle walls are the remains of a Turkish library, the tower of Bohemond, the Seraglio of Ali Pasha, the Treasury…. and much more.
The Ioannina region is breathtaking and perfect for romantic getaways and family vacations. It's impossible to get bored here, as the clubs and bars remain open throughout the night, with university students flocking in to enjoy the fun. Ioannina boasts of excellent restaurants and master chefs who serve delicacies you will remember for a long time. Immerse yourself in the captivating legends surrounding this stunning city located in Epirus.

Good video because unlike many of the others, it actually takes the trouble to show you scenes from Ioannina, its archaeological sites, castle, lake, etc. People travelling to Ioannina can therefore get a feel for the city. And the subtitles are useful. Ευχαριστουμε μεγαλε, εφιαξες ενα χρησιμο οδηγο κι απο εγγλεζικα σκιζεις ... οι υποτιτλοι δεν εχουν ουτε ενα λαθος. This city is called Janina not this Ioannina bullshit. Ali pasha was also Albanian and he spoke Albanian and he revolted against the Ottoman Empire and there are still songs in Albanian that are about him. This old city rightfully belongs to the Albanian people no doubt about it. Even the Greek gods names have meaning in the Albanian language to this day whereas they have no meaning in “Greek”. Greek culture is literally made up. During 1821 the majority of the fighters that fought for the independence of “Greece” were Albanian. The first Greek-Albanian dictionary was created in 1821 because most of the soldiers were ethnic Albanians or should I say Shqiptar.
