Vikos Gorge, a masterpiece of nature, inspires awe with its wild imposing landscape and breathtaking view. The captivating realm of Zagorohoria is a cluster of nearly 50 stone-built villages nestled in the Zagori Region in the heart of Pindos mountains. Υou'll be transported to a world where stone-built houses and churches seamlessly blend with the stunning backdrop of Vikos Gorge.
The villages have managed to preserve their authentic essence, standing as untouched relics of the past. A place where time seems to fade away, allowing visitors to vividly witness the living traditions and historical tapestry of Zagorohoria.
The Papingo Rock Pools were created by the erosion of the rocks, chiseled by the running waters. It is a complex of waterfalls and natural pools with clear and cold running water.
The majesty of the landscape, adorned with verdant slopes blends harmoniously with the stone build bridges, mansions, churches and elaborate cobbled paths.
Built at an altitude of 500 to 2500 meters, some literally hanging on the edge of the Vikos Gorge, each village is a part of the unique composition of the area.
Rogovou Monastery is located close to the village of Tsopelovo and is dedicated to the memory of John the Baptist, The original church built by Poukheria in the 11th century, was completely destroyed and on its foundations a new church was constructed in 1749.
The Voutsas Monastery, dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin, is surrounded by vineyards of approximately 70 acres was founded in the year 672. The Monastery was destroyed during the conquest of Epirus by the Turks in 1430, was renovated in 1680 and burned to the ground by the Germans in 1943.
The artificial lake of Aoos was created after the construction of a dam on the Aoos River and reveals now a realm of pure natural beauty. Located at an altitude of 1,350 m, ranks it as the largest mountainous lake in Greece covering an area of 11,5 square km.
The enchanting Zorica Lake, known as “Waterlily Lake”, is a pure nature’s gem in the heart of eastern Zagori.
