Yatai are traditional food stalls or mobile street vendors that can be found in various cities throughout Japan. These compact and portable stalls are typically set up in the evening and offer a wide range of street foods, snacks, and beverages. Yatai are illuminated by colorful lanterns, serving up iconic dishes like tonkotsu ramen, yakitori, and takoyaki. What makes yatai special is the food and communal experience; sharing close quarters with other diners fosters conversation and connection, making it a quintessential part of Hakata culture.
Today’s food adventure takes Shizuka to Hakata City in Fukuoka, where yatai culture reigns supreme and transforms the city streets into a culinary wonderland. After diving into the history of yatai in Japan, Shizuka meets up with Bruce, a Fukuoka-based guide and food expert.
Their first stop is Barakamon, a popular yatai serving Hakata street foods, where our host and special guest feast on flying fish and pork bone broth ramen plus fried ramen. Their second stop is Kagoshima Yocky, a yatai serving Kagoshima-style street food, where they order Kagoshima pork fried ramen and an orange whisky and soda. Their third and final stop is Yatai Takachan, a family-run yatai serving authentic Hakata street foods. To round off their evening, Shizuka and Bruce order yamaimo steak and a spicy cod roe omelet.

That’s Awesome 💯💯💯💯😀😀
‘Cleaning’ the city of yatai food stalls would be a tragic turn of events. I’m glad to hear that the public opinion is swaying in the direction of embracing it as a part of fukuokas idiosyncratic food culture! Thanks Shizuka and team for another stellar video.
During one of my first trips to Japan we went to a yatai that was a bit out of the way, the owners were an elderly couple and the majority of the customers were chefs from restaurants around the city, sadly it seems to have gone now but there’s still plenty of amazing yatai to visit and in my experience it’s quite unique in Japan to have strangers chatting to you.
The food and atmosphere of eating outdoors looks fantastic, Japan really has incredible food.
It really does!
Yatai have to be the best food on a night out!
It issss🎉
Food, beer, making friends…what could be better? I really hope I can get myself to one of these places when I finally get to Japan.
That looks so much fun!
Love how ur show is presented ❤
Beautiful😮❤
Can hardly wait to visit Japan!
Can't go wrong with a Yatai outing! ❤
Adding this to my list of places to visit if i ever get to Japan. Thanks for sharing.
As always a great Shizuka vlog
I really loved Fukuoka, underrated gem of a city to visit. Thanks for another great video.
Another great video by Shizuka and a great introduction to Japanese yatais! Good food and great folks that own them….
Thank you!!!🌹
Yatai was so much fun !
Had the chance to go there in 2008 and will not forget it!
Love the little dance when Shizuka started drinking 😅😅. Great ep. Hope the traditional yatai keeps on
Shizuka's smile✨
Fukuoka has always been on the top of my list to visit, lovin't Yatai's, pretty awesome to see some traditional and also some modern takes, can't wait to check them out
ALWAYS great infos 🇯🇵🇯🇵💯💯
Love all street food - thank you JBF crew!
Our pleasure!
Awesome!! Have a great week🤍
Thank you! You too!
Shizuka is a true foodie. Beer, Sake, great food and she's really energetic. I also like the format of the show. she speaks Japanese and English fluently so she doesn't come off as clueless. I don't really like foodie shows where the host is clueless and completely foreign to the food. She has a connection with the guide and the locals!
I'm going to Fukuoka next week and will definitely try some Yatai. Thanks for this introduction.
Can't wait to visit Japan one day. Thanks for highlighting the Yatai food stalls!
Please come soon!🎉
It looks yummy ❤
Thank you for the video about yatai Shizuka! I've always been curious about going to a yatai. Maybe when I go back to Japan next year, I'll go eat and drink at a yatai. Thanks again!
Tried one when I visited this year (at that famous French stall), its a fun experience if you are able to communicate since it feels like a social event. Spoke in broken English and very limited Japanese...had a great time
Great 👌
I'll be in Fukuoka starting tomorrow. This was very helpful.
Yatai daisuki. 💓 I always try to find them since you can get something unique and yummy. Great choice for this video. 👏👏👏👏
Arigato gozaimas for another interesting video😊 For Me its really will be interesting to immerse into very unique Japanesse culture. Therefore learning Your language in order to try get the locals, try your food and to be around Japanesse. You are very interesting person to get along togather 😊🍷🫕
I eat a ton of street food in japan. It is amazing and everyone is different!
i love it when she wears that head band is so cute!
I'm watching a video during lunch break. I'm healed by Shizuka's tone😊
Enjoy your lunch!
Will be back to Japan in June!
How exciting! Which places will you be visiting?
@@JapanbyFood To be honest, I am just trying to figure it out the moment I get there, kinda like adventurous style! I visited so many places and even the lower regions like Kagawa! Very hard to one by one just so many! HAHAHA Only Left is Hiroshima and Okinawa!!! I came there last May!!! I miss it so much! It is just the best. JR pass Already expensive
Wowwwww
This is so ironic. Shizuoka is Japanese but having a foreign guide in japan.
I live in Tokyo, so I definitely need a local to show me around other parts of Japan haha
@@ShizukaAndersoni also need guidess that could speak english fluently like you shizuka san! One day Japan.. one day..
She’s from Tokyo. It’s 1000km away.
Hey my beautiful friend. Awesome video. Keep up the good work love you all!!
Thanks so much! Love y’all back!
Hoping Yatai will never end in Japan. 😊
Another home run video!!!
More to come!
Looks like some Great places to Eat!
For sure! 🎉
The best English speaking host and great Eng subs!
Thank you!! 🥹🥹
My favorite City in all of Japan
When I come visit Japan again, I'll make sure to hit up the yatai and izakaya scene. 🍻
WAY TO GO BRUCE......A MAN OF FEW WORDS......
Interesting! They must be very hard working people since it appears that not only do they cook and prepare drinks they must assemble and disassemble Yatai every day 😮
Yep! They are super hardworking!
I watch a bunch of channels during the week.
But when Sunday gets here, I look forward to see what you're enticing me with.
Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much! We are so happy to hear that!❤
You're very welcome!@@JapanbyFood
I have a plan to visit fukuoka soon
I'd love to go to Fukuoka just for the yatai!!!!
It's wrong they get so strict on a great history they must treasure that history!!! Old skool japan I love it!!!! 🍻🍺🥃👍
Sent your vids to a friend of mine currently visiting Japan
Thank you for that!
We are flying to Fukuoka at the end of the month, so this video is really helpful! Sadly we'll be there too late at night for the tour, but hopefully we can find a late night yatai! :)
you'll have plenty of options when u get here, enjoy.
Every Sunday I look for the Japan by Food new uploads, it reminds me of my trip to Japan and also my future trips about where I wanna go next time! Thank you,Japan by Food for the consistently great contents!
Shizuka is a great host, love her energy! You can also tell she really loves her beer since she's drinking a draft and Bruce is only having a pint :D
We appreciate you so much!!❤
Hi Shizzy. Hi Japan by Food. Sending air hugs. 😊
Thank you! 🤗
@@JapanbyFood You're welcome 🤗
So polite of Bruce to wait for Shizuka to eat or sip first
Japan is on my list.
Please come!
if I would visit japan I am gonna go instantly those stands to eat. Just because I see those people working so hard.
Here in Hawaii, many old school Japanese okazuyas, restaurants, etc are disappearing. The younger generation dont want to take over.I do hope Japan starts taking their population decline crisis more seriously soon.
Hope you can come here to Hawaii and see why many Japanese love to visit and some move here!❤
We would love to visit! We hope they won’t disappear but will stay here forever!
@JapanbyFood that would be awesome!CZcams channels like yours are inspiring me to teach myself Japanese and to someday finally visit there!
Brah I agree! There are still some good ones on Kapahulu area though (if you’re in HNL)

Bruce seems like a swell fella, someone you could easily have a drink with!
I love going on vicarious dates with Shizzy. ☺
happy birthday sizuka-san
Aww thank you so much!!🥰
ぜんぶおいしそう!
そうですね🎉
I was just in Fukuoka with a tour group for a few days. Two of the dinners were included, but on the one "free" night we had, my companions wanted to go to a fugu restaurant! I actually did not care for fugu either. Oh well, maybe one day I'll get to a yatai!
Oh please try yatai next time!
I just came back from Japan. I am not the type that wait for tables. I settled all my appetite with 7 eleven, Family Mart or Lawson ready to go food or hotel buffet when i was on my own.
Shizuka Anderson “❤”
Straight for the booze Shizuka, when Bruce said ‘means to get drunk’.. response by you awesome 😀. Great video great food.
Thanks for watching!
@@JapanbyFood just realised to S should be Z. Humble apologies 😉
Wow!🐈🐈🤪😛😉
Wish I went to one of these instead of ramen stadium.... Next time!
i just left hakata yesterday lol… but i’ll be back on the 9th!
Wow! You won’t be gone for too long 😅
My mother was born there!
The feeling that you're from that country but your tourguide is from other country ;-)
I've never visited Fukuoka. Only the airport but I wonder. What do people in Fukuoka or Kyushu in general think of Tokyoites.
the guide is very charismatic lol
a Thai actress named Bella who look identical to you......very amazing
I miss the food prices in Japan. I would usually eat out 5-6 days of the week when I lived in Japan. Stateside I would go out once or twice a month because a single dinner would run me $70-$80 including tax and tip. Compared to like 1600 Yen, I can get a bowl of ramen, bowl of fried rice and 5 gyoza. 13:16 That area was my go to when I went to Fukuoka. Hit some up some yatai spots before going to canal city mall.
Yep, we love affordable eating out options!

Shizukaaaaaaa
Ayumi Hamasaki hometown.
Zukes!
🍻💞
Yatais are such a great experience. But these days of rural depopulation and urban congestion, the long queues make them not so great to attend.
We don't get streetfood like this in the philippines.
I loved the “yatais” of Hong Kong but the authorities shut them down. Hong Kong lost a rich part of its history. I hope the Japanese never lose their yatais. I love them every time I visit though they are far and few in the Kanto region.
They need to keep this going, it’s great for tourism. Period. I’d rather travel to Japan to eat street food than to travel to India eat it their filthy street food.
Are yatais only in Fukuoka?
No, but there are many more of them in Fukuoka!
LIKEE
wait im confused.. who is the guide here? who is the tourist?
Nobody is really the “tourist”, but I guess that would be me, because Bruce is the guide and the local here! 😆
Its always government that kills beautiful things. Let's hope the locals press the government hard to keep their hands off so that this gorgeous culture can thrive!

Private, family owned street food is losing out not just in Japan but also in Hong Kong..
우탄(소혀?), 안창살, 오뎅, 닭꼬치 ㅋㅋㅋ
Im convinced shizuka must starve herself between shoots because i could not eat that much in a night 😎 i could eat in those Yatai's every night tho 🍺
I will find Japanese more than Bruce White from California
I love japan. If I Scoot myself over there will my bank account turn out to be a bust?. I'm from Portland btw.
japaneese faeitas
She could voice a anime character
I don't know who you are about I care about you a lot... I hope you can come out of the snow...
I think Shizuka is way too young for working the town "Late-Night." She should be at home with her parents and in bed at 8pm like most children!
it's sad seeing the tour guides in this channel
Sorry, but I have to say that having an American trying to introduce Japanese street food is just like having an Asian trying to sell the best southern fried chicken in America. Not the best choice for a co host I must say for this episode.
