Everyone calls her a diva when in reality she is one of the most gracious around. She said in an interview she was shocked and never imagined she would win the Gold on this event. She also showed so much sportsmanship at the Olympics consistently giving thumbs up to competing gymnasts.

Mustafina is my favorite russian gymnast. Her grace, poise, and cheering on other people even if she doesn't get a medal or is in 2/3rd. In the 2012 aa olympics she was happy with 3rd, her teammate, however, showed very poor sportsmanship.
Ask her COACHES how difficult is to work with her and you will understand.
Only Mustafina could manage a gold medal on her worst event. She's a tough girl very strong minded and determined against all odds.
Cody S. Are you kidding? She is fantastic on beam, if there's an area where she is weak, that would be V and FX. If she hits beam, she can beat the Chinese.
She is fantastic. I call it her worst event because this is the only event she hasn't won a world or olympic medal on until here.
And by far her least consistent throughout her career span
Vette gaddia Um unlikely. She's inconsistent on beam. Her worst event definitely. This is the first medal she's ever won at a worlds/olympics on beam. She didn't even make finals in London. Yet she has a world AND olympic medal on floor as well as a silver medal on vault. Mustafina is amazing but you can't count on her to win gold on beam. Bars is another story. Brilliant there.
***** I don't think Mustafina's weakest event is beam. Her weakest event is definitely V. There is no way she can win gold in Worlds on V without an Amanar. On beam, she can do a very nice double turn, Arabian 1/2, and even a very flexible Switch leap Ring to rival the Chinese. And if she connects her Onodi, she can be fantastic on beam. Of course, she rarely hits every element on Beam. But who ever does? Maybe Yang Bo in her prime.
So she has basically earned a world championship medal in every event throughout her career. This is remarkable especially because the balance beam was the only event in which she did not medal in 2010, then she comes back and gets a gold medal. The mark of a true champion.

i always liked Russian women gymnasts because maybe their tough mentality or elegant and discipline behavior but for Aliya doesn't matter for me at this point she win or loose she is The champ in my heart and i am saying this deep inside the my heart love you and wish you the BEST ALIYA

Mary Marrero Well Mary, she’s a double Olympic champ and has 7 Olympic medals and 12 World medals. She’s a different gymnast, who actually mentioned Simone? Aliyas a tremendous gymnast and will always be champion.

Quick beam update, this upcoming Russian Cup, Mustafina has been training her arabain again and is planning a single turn after her double turn on beam! She is also experimenting with multiple coaches on new beam sets. Goodness, I love her ability to spice up her routines unlike Kyla who is fabulous but rather dull when it comes to fresh upgrades.
Thanks for the update. She's definitely very creative and I admire her boldness.

She built her own name in this competition with her signature graceful connection with the audience and judges.thats why shes an icon in this sport.

Finally!! Of course I'm very proud of our USA gymnasts dominating these Worlds. But Aliya is among the best of the best and just needed to get her footing and over the nerves! She is beautiful to watch. Congrats!

One of my favorite moments in the sport since the abhorrent open-ended COP was established. Queen Aliya transcends any scoring system 🙏.
I really don't see where the 1.1 in deductions came from. I think the judges were a little harsh as she was first up, but this was nearly perfect.
it pisses me off because i think judges just take off a point right off the bat. clearly there aren’t 1.1 points in deductions but judges nowadays basically make it so that nearly perfect routines don’t exist, when obviously they do. they took a point off right away, and if it’s a horrendous routine, they only take a little more off, like 1.8 points or something. it basically puts no value on execution and all on difficulty
They’re very strict in execution at the start of the quad but become more lenient as the quad goes on
Well most of her deductions in this routine came from the pauses because before every skill she pauses too long so there’s literally a .1 before every skill she does

If she would have done this same routine and gone like 4th she would have gotten an even higher score. 8.9 is awesome but I bet the judges would have given her a 9.1 in execution. She is amazing and I love this routine. I hope to see that crazy connection this year!

2. That leaves the double turn, which should incur no more than 0.1 worth of deductions. Rest of deductions came from where?
theres always a few form errors that the judges are better at catching than the rest if us, but in this case it’s probably because she went first.

I think nobody was better at faking sticks than Mustafina. She did it well so many times. This is to her credit - it's a good skill to have.

I’m wondering where they got 1.1 in deductions. Her form throughout the whole routine was impeccable. I can see maybe 0.3 off for slow timing between elements and 0.3 off for the dismount (legs apart, feet flexed, didn’t hold stick very long). Where else?? Her toes were pointed on everything else and her legs were straight on everything, as well as hitting complete splits.

Beam is an event where it doesn’t matter where you qualify- it matters who hits in FINALS. I’ve lost count of the number of “favorites” who flubbed in finals. Aliya was dead on here and it showed in the results.

She had a bad injury at some point before this I think. Inner knee area, maybe ACL. Always loved her performances, she's a heartthrob!
She ruptured her left knee at Euros 2011 but after 2012 she had several different injuries including back problems etc. It is amazing how she actually has managed to capitalize on the big moments even with all the struggles she as been through in her career

I always preferred Vicki Komova, but Aliya was such as strong competitor who performed with such determination and perfection. Beam is not her event, but even her bars routine couldn't match Vicki's.

She lacks choreo but her elegance (who is just unmachable) makes all the difference, and that's why she's considered one of the most artistic gymnasts in the world ! This is also why she loses less than tenths compared to some gymnasts, like Ellie Black, who have a little bit more choreo, but who lose a lot more because they are not elegant (sometimes robotics) in their gestures.
You know even Vasiliki, Sanne and Eythora who are very artistic for me, are everytime deducted on artistry. The juges are way too rigid on artistry since 2013...
