Can't help but think the horses deserved awards for their performances, some of them scene stealing i.e. the end one chewing the towel to gain attention.
Watched it last night for the ....I've lost count! Everytime I end up with the cathartic experience! All the actors deserved an Oscar and Charlton Heston and John Griffith certainly deserved their Oscars!
My favorite line in the whole movie is shortly before this, when the Sheik Ilderim knocks the trainer out of the chariot with the words "You treat my horses like animals!"
Even though at 72 I have seen this great movie a hundred times over the years, those magnificent horses still make my heart leap with joy at their beauty and grace!
Amen to that. Yes, the horses were beautiful and intelligent. I'll take them. (I don't know where to put them but I will look after them as I am sure they will be my friends). God bless them and the good people who take care of them. It made my day to see such beautiful steads. +
Mindblowing scene from the master piece "Benhur". This movie is full of such scenes. So much thought has gone into artistically framing each of them !!
Both Charlton Heston and Hugh Griffith won Oscars for their work. And the film won 9 more including Best Picture - a record that was later tied but not beaten.
I'm quite OK with Heston winning as Best Actor. But the actor playing the Sheik as Best Supporting Actor?! They should have given that award to Stephen Boyd as they also did at the Golden Globes - he was clearly the better actor. And it's a mystery to me why an actor as talented as he was never got as far as he should have been getting. OK. he got kicked out of Cleopatra because Liz Taylor wanted Richard Burton (Boyd having been the original choice for Mark Anthony) but there must be more to it than that.
Hugh Griffith stole every scene he was in. Nothing like his pointing out silkily to the arrogant Romans in the bath that they could afford to make nasty racist jokes when they outnumbered the butt of their bullying. And then suckering them into huge bets against his superior horses and driver.
Which are the most gorgeous: the horses or Charlton Heston….🤔 this movie, the actors and the soundtrack are breathtaking. I just can’t tire of listening to the music.
I have ever loved these scenes., moved in-expessively such gentlness and raw-power combined. The Bedouin developed exquisite horses, one given themselves as legend tells, in return gifted to the world. Nomadic tribes loved horses as an extension of themselves. The power and beauty, mobility the vast areas of arid desert were as a noble challenge to the arab horse, fleet of foot, able to traverse the stretches with riders on their backs, conquering barriers of space and time thruout history. Fiery spirit a persevering endurence, calm and docile to a soft touch, faithful companion journeys. Borne the ages alike the desert winds coursed the expanses as if effortless.

The chariot race scene was magnificent with brief scenes of the white horses from Judah and the black horses from Messala racing together stride by stride.
It was suspenseful a bit when his rival was nearly killing him, but when his chariot collapsed, that’s when he got what he frickin deserved. Ben-Hur deserved to be the winner of the chariot race.
@@freeravi4u what garbage! The Lippizaner horses’, with the blue tack, were for the hero of the film, Judah Ben-Hur. The black horses with red tack, we’re reflecting the evil mind, & heart of Messala. End of.
