Er ist weder eine klassische Rampensau, noch ein besonders innovativer Künstler. Aber zwei Dinge kann Noel Gallagher wie kaum ein anderer: Welthits schreiben und die Klappe aufreißen. In Letzterem übertrifft ihn nur sein jüngerer Bruder Liam.
Noel Gallagher hat in den neunziger Jahren die englische Musikszene entscheidend mitgeprägt. Für seine Band Oasis schrieb er nicht nur Welthits, er machte den Typus des rauhen, fußballbegeisterten „Lads“ salonfähig und lieferte gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder Liam regelmäßig Stories für die Klatschpresse. Die Streits der beiden Brüder sind dank ihrer Heftigkeit legendär. Dazu kamen jede Menge verbale Entgleisungen, gerne auch gegen andere Künstler und Bands wie ihre Konkurrenten von Blur.
Nach der Jahrtausendwende wurde es ruhiger um die Gallaghers, ihre Streits jedoch schlimmer, bis Noel schließlich den Hut nahm und sein Soloprojekt Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds gründete. Noels Comeback gelingt besser als das seines Bruders Liam mit der Band Beady Eye. Kritik und Fans sind gleichermaßen zufrieden mit Noels Output, der sein Songwriting-Talent mit Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds voll auslebt, ohne direkt an den Oasis-Sound anzuknüpfen. Das selbstbetitelte Debüt schoss 2011 an die Spitze der Charts und kam auch bei der Kritik gut an. Kein Wunder, klingt das Album im Vergleich zum Oasis-Spätwerk entspannt, frisch und endlich wieder leidenschaftlich. Dabei stammen fast alle großen Oasis-Hits aus seiner Feder.
