    I've watched this video back a couple of times myself, and I've come to the conclusion that my hand calculated results may be skewed by the amount of fuel inserted during that final click of the nozzle. With such a low amount of fuel required to top the tank back off again, there's a huge difference for every 0.1 gallon inserted. For example, if the nozzle had shut off at 1.9 gallons that would have made the dash display accurate at 29 MPG. But, just adding another 0.3 and finishing at 2.2 gallons dropped the calculation to 25 MPG. I probably need to do this again, on a longer trip. Stay tuned!

    You have to have the 3.21 gears to get the 30 mpg. You will loose about 4,000 lbs in towing though.

    Thank you for this, with the 3.92 rear end. Looking at this truck and would be doing some towing and would get the 3.92! Thanks again

    Great video buddy. The funny thing is the diesel pump doesn't have coverage. Just like we treat diesel lol

    Great video.. just got my eco about 2 weeks ago.. did lots of videos on lift, ceramic coat and mpg with 35’s..

      With a 4" lift and 35's, you may want to install a 4.56 ratio. Your mileage will be about the same. If you drive nicely like in the video.
      If you lift 4" front and rear. The aerodynamics will stay okay. If you level it out. Your mpg will be less.

    Only 1200 miles on it??? Yes! Yes! When the engine breaks in, you should see a big difference. My neighbour has the 2020 1500 Rebel EcoDiesel; and at some point after 15K miles, he noticed a big difference. Same for my colleague, at the office. He has the 1500 Tradesman version; and when the engine started to break in properly, he started saving a lot of money. He makes regular runs throughout Southern Ontario, between Windsor and Kingston, as well as Thunder Bay and Niagara Falls.

    Too bad for the jackknife wreck spoiling the test. I have a 2016 Ram 1500 Quadcab Tradesman 4wd 3.92 ratio Ecodiesel. The stock tire size was 265/70-17. I have a snugtop fiberglass camper shell. And carry a lot of stuff for work.
    For the first 5,000 miles I pretty much got similar results to what you got. And I drove a 360 miles trip from Lancaster, CA to San Francisco, CA, and back. After about 30,000 miles the fuel economy got better. Close to 30 mpg. By 50,000 miles I had added a 250lb Ranch Hand bumper. And a Flowmaster 70 series HD muffler. Which got changed to a 50 series HD, because of excess heat. Flowmaster said the turbo needs the larger internals of 4" of the 50 vs 3" of the 70. But the inlet and outlet are 3" on both. I also had added a Bank's silencer delete tube.
    At that point I could drive the speed limit of 70mph on I-5, 65mph on I-280, CA-85, and US-101. 55mph on CA-152 and CA-138. Always used speed control. And got 31 to 33mpg fairly consistently.
    Now the truck has153,000 miles.
    I am interested in another Ecodiesel with the Crewcab, 6'4" bed, 33 gallon tank, and the 3.92 gears. The compromises work out fairly good.
    My wife has a 2018 Ram 2500 Crewcab Tradesman 4wd 6.7L Cummins 3.42 ratio. It rides horrible. Even after getting Eibach shocks. The off idle throttle response lacks the finesse of the 3.92 ratio. When the roads are icy, her Cummins is tricky to drive. While the Ecodiesel is better than our '03 Ford Explorer 4wd or our Jeep ZJ. So I may have the dealer change it to 3.73. Or 4.10 if we go to 35" tires. The VGT engine brake is absolutely the best! And was the primary reason she bought the truck. Of course that Cummins is an insane amount of power for when we are not pulling a trailer.

    Great video, excellent choice for a speed limit... giver a few more miles until your engine breaks in and do a 6 month or 1 year mpg test again 👍👍👍👍

    I think it’s the lower gears you you need to get the higher gears to get the RPM down to get the max fuel economy. Nice job on the video

      Perhaps the digital measurement from the dash is calibrated based on the 3.21 gearing being assumed?

  • @danielmeade9061
    @danielmeade9061 Před 2 lety

    What size wheels does the truck have? I would think 18's and the 3.21 would help out to the get the MPG lower.

  • @justinjones7238
    @justinjones7238 Před 4 lety

    Keep a watch on that and I bet it will change. You may want to do a longer loop, but I would expect your mileage to improve as you get some miles on it. Once I got over 10,000 miles on mine it seems like my transmission map changed, and it shifted a lot less frequently. I have a crew cab Laramie 4 x 4 and I’ve got 17,000 miles on mine as of today day. I’ve seen as high as 35mpg on a long trip. ( I have the 3.21s)

    I’m thinking about buying a used 2020 diesel with 3.92 gear for towing a RV. It does have standard coil suspension. Any advice?

  • @junioradkins9123
    @junioradkins9123 Před 4 lety +2

    Should improve with break in. Also I've been told that the dash display really needs over a hundred miles to balance out and get closer to right. But great video and thx for all information

    • @zachploen4067
      @zachploen4067 Před 3 lety

      Ram will tell you that you shouldn't expect EPA ratings until break in, so you are dead on Junior Adkins. I know this will get better with time. @OFFRD has the fuel economy improved with more miles on the truck? I'd imagine your past 5k now since the video was made.

    2021 limited with 2k miles on the truck looking at 21 MPG with 3.92 gear. I am at 5,300 ish elevation and its cool during the day 45-40 to 20F at night and my commute is full of elevation changes and about 20 miles. I would say avg speed is 50mph

    I know that you said you pleased your jeep gladiator, but can you lease a new 2020 Ram echo diesel 1500? If so, I'd like to look into that. Can you hear the diesel, or is it muffled?

      I have test drove 3 different eco-diesels. 2020 and 2-2021s. The diesel is very quiet it’s crazy even while rev’in it up you can’t tell it’s diesel from the rear, only upfront as you can hear the diesel “tick”…I will be leasing a 2021 big horn

    As a Ky native that moved to Co, they have hills here on the I-25 interstate. It's 70 that you climb thousands, as a gen 2 ecodiesel owner mine only averages 22-23 it was 25 with 73k miles tops now since the recall. I would say give it til 10k miles to see the 29 mpg, my evic is rarely accurate usually 1 -2 mpg off. Was that the WK parkway, I'm from grayson county?

    Gas prices drop because people aren't driving as much and the vast majority of cars and personal vehicles run on gas. However the semis, trains, and cargo ships are all still going- and they all run on diesel, so there's not as much reason to lower prices as the demand for diesel remains fairly constant. Even jet fuel is basically diesel.

    Amen to Brad Paisely! #1 you get poor fuel economy in the rain (go figure) & 2) you need to do a 100+ mile test to get more accurate results. My tests on my V6 were with 200 mile tests and that was with 60% highway and 40% city. I averaged 17mpg. I have 6 speed manual, 2.73 gears (I know I know stfu), and LT285/70R17 BFG KM3’s.
