Poison types generally have well-rounded stats, but don't excel in any particular area and have a lot of weaknesses both offensively and defensively. What if we got access to the full spectrum of Poison encounters in Pokémon HeartGold... could they beat the game's hardest challenge?

We've done some hard Pokemon challenges in the past, but usually they were a solo Pokemon challenge run. What if we still did a really difficult challenge... but with a full team using hardcore nuzlocke rules, and with only one type? Today we find out: can I beat a Pokemon HeartGold Hardcore Nuzlocke with only Poison types? No items and no overleveling!

Monotype Hardcore Nuzlocke Ruleset:
(1) If a Pokémon faints, it must be permanently boxed or released.
(2) Only the first type-specific Pokémon encountered in each Route/Area can be caught.
(3) No Legendaries/Mythicals, duplicates, or same-evolution-line Pokémon can be caught or used. If a duplicate is encountered, the next unique type-specific Pokémon encounter can be caught.
(4) Additional Pokémon may be caught for the purpose of HM use, but these may not be used in battle at any time during the run.
(5) No Items can be used in battle (Held Items are allowed).
(6) Party Pokémon levels are limited to the highest level Pokémon of the next Gym Leader or Elite 4 Member. So long as your Pokémon are at or below the level cap when the Gym Leader/Elite 4 Member battle starts, they can level up mid-battle.
(7) "Set" Battle Mode must be used at all times.
(8) No connecting with other games for the purposes of importing Pokémon, Items, etc.

Seeing Nidoqueen in the thumbnail and it being a Nuzlocke in HeartGold got me excited. I really do like poison types. Very good variety in these games. Thank you, Silph (:
Funny thing especially in the earlier games: the poison type had quite a lot of good Pokemon in its roster. But only a very few of them had a real advantage by (also) having the poison type.
During my first playthrough of SoulSilver, my Nidoqueen, Juliet, saved me from wiping to Lance by tanking Draco Meteors while I healed my team. I’ve had a softspot for Nidoqueens since then.

Now that Tauros finally sort of got some love, I think only Golduck and Arbok are more deserving of... something.
Currently doing a nuzlocke of SS where ekans was absolutely VITAL in all the first three gyms

Agreed! It’s one of my favorite Pokémon and my ace in Ultra Moon.
Since the Original 151 include 32 Poison-types, that means over 1/5 of Kanto is Poison (or roughly 20%).
The original 2 gens gave us so many poison types they dialed down the number a lot in recent gens

Despite being 20% of the pokemon population the poison type are responsible for 50% of the violent crimes commited by Team rocket members.

In Gen 2 (GSC), they weren't trying to make Johto Pokémon. In the Gen 2 games and most promotional material, the new Pokémon are described as newly discovered Pokémon.
They were indicating that the original 251 were found natively in both regions, and the newest 100 were just discovered between Red's and Gold's journeys. (Example: in GSC, Houndour is only found in Kanto. Houndour is a Kanto Pokémon)
Then, when they made Gen 3, they originally planned for only new Pokémon. Not a single old Pokémon would have been available (this changed during development, but not until after a number of Pokémon were designed. Such as the entire Wurmple family)

I don't know exactly what the naming theme is but my guess is cancelled or "poisonous" celebrities. Even if I'm wrong, it made me laugh throughout the video. I love that you do Nuzlockes in older games, not just the new ones

The poison type in general can be criminally underrated. It doesn't have many weaknesses and often come in the form of incredibly scary pokemon (Crowbat/Gengar).

I did this run a long time ago, and I have to say Crobat absolutely reminded me why it is still a premier Nuzlocke Pokémon to this day. And the run as a whole reminded me why Poison is my favorite type

Poison is my second favorite typing, right behind Bug. They’re such fun types to use, with a ton of awesomely designed mons
This is a really interesting run. It’s surprising just how many poison type encounters you get before the 1st gym badge in hgss. This run is changing how I view poison types lol

Dunno if you've already done it, Silph, but if you haven't you should consider doing some variety of tierlist for Pokemon. Could be a "gen 1" list, or all water types etc. Could be based on viability/strength but also aesthetics and whatnot. With your knowledge I think it would make for excellent and fun content. You saying Tentacruel was within your top 50 favourite mons gave me the idea.

You should try a double Hardcore Nuzlocke of this game: the Johto gyms with only Gen 2 Pokémon and the Kanto gyms with only Gen 1 Pokémon and then the survivors reunited for the final challenge against Red.
The poison type could be a good one for this challenge but also Water, Bug, Flying and Normal could work.
I've done a run like this, venemoth having psychic type moves made it an unusual standout

I used to do mono type Poison runs in Red/Blue since it was the only type (that I could think of as a kid) where I could get a starter in type, and learn every HM

I love both the Nido (I usually try to evolve both in Fire Red/Leaf Green) but most of the time I end up using Nidoking. However I *love* Nidoqueen and she needs all the love she deserves.
It's been 14 years and I've only now found out you can get Sludge Bomb from that gate attendant after defeating Team Rocket.
Seeing how well you finessed the whole game with minimal risks and solid type-coverage, I'd say you're a certified Poison-Type Gym Master
