  • Mary & Wyatt, fresh off of a leek quiche dinner, settle in to chat about food and diet culture. Mary discusses her reading and research in the areas of dieting, heart health, and "bad"/"good" foods. They talk about the junk food industry, the relationship between fatphobia and racism, and the deep injustice of food deserts. Also on the agenda: disastrous celebrity impressions, Wyatt slanders the macrame industrial complex, and poems by Philip Metres and Melissa Lozada-Oliva.

This was a wonderful video episode. My stomach doctor told me a couple years ago that he has done extensive research as well as studies at the UW Medical Center in Seattle about health and obesity, especially when I was having so much trouble losing weight and feeling bad about myself (despite eating a healthy vegetarian diet and exercising every other day). He discovered that there were many overweight/obese people who were perfectly healthy, just as much as someone who is skinny. He also discovered that in a study, when the obese people were told to lose weight and they did, they gained it back quickly, regardless of any change in diet or exercise. This conclusion he found was that the human body has a set weight for every person, and no matter how much you diet, restrict food, or exercise several hours a day to lose that excess weight, the body is going to try everything to get back to that ideal weight for your body. He said that not everyone is supposed to have a Barbie body. I found it very interesting. It made me stop dieting and just keep eating healthy and exercising to maintain muscle mass. I actually felt better once I stopped dieting and had a lot more energy.
I think it would be a wonderful idea for you to do an exercise video series. It would help so many people with feeling body positivity.

Why is restriction of food necessarily a dangerous thing? We now live in a world that we weren’t actually designed by evolution for. We live with a ridiculous abundance of food, but our bodies evolved to live in a world of scarcity of resources. Our natural drives for energy-dense food served us well for most of our history, but we lived with serious limitations to the amount of food that most of us could access at any given time until about 50-100 years ago. We are still driven to eat as if we still lived in that world of scarcity, when we live at all times with the availability of so much more food than we need. “Restriction” is just our deliberate attempt to make up for the mismatch of our availability of food and the availability of food that we were designed to be living with. The problem with “listening to your body” is that your body is telling you to eat more than you actually need to, because it’s functioning as if you were in a world in which calorie-dense food is extremely rare and making the most of any opportunity to have it is important.
