    Thanks for the review and showing folks you choose your equipment to make the sound you want to support the music you're playing.

      Should be everybody's mentality! I'm a huge proponent of sound being the guiding factor.

    The Giardinelli mouthpieces with the big stanping are the ones made at the shop. The smaller stamping were made outside. The ones today aren't even close to the originals, in size and quality. Only place to get original type ones is at Greg Black or used on line. I agree about the 3C. It feels great and still allows sizzle in the upper register (I had double C range on it). It has a 1 1/2 rim size but a medium deep cup.

      The 7C might be the "new" one which is most likely closer to a Giardinelli 10C.

      @@KerryLorah I don’t doubt Giardinelli’s specs got less consistent/perhaps trended smaller overall as time went on, but in this case the 3C felt firmly in Bach 1-1/2 territory and the 7C did just about feel like a Bach 3.
      I’ve since found a couple of original Giardinelli NY screw-rim pieces in a size 6. Namely the 6M and 6S underparts with 6 and 6W rims. Those are interesting because the original NY 6 diameter honestly feels around a Bach 1-1/2 but the 6W is a little more cramped. The 6M is a great mouthpiece. The 6S… well, it’s got potential, but does feel a little tight overall. I understand it was a well-liked lead mouthpiece in the 70s or so.

      @@SamuelPlaysBrass The ones made by Bob and later by Greg were larger. You're right about the 3C being very 1 1/2 like. My comment was directed at the ones you can order on line today. The sizes are off. People need to realize that to get the real deal is still possible but they need to contact Greg. I've seen a guy who got all 3 of the MF mouthpieces. So there is still hope. But don't let the name fool you. It's like the UMI Benge. They bought name, not the horn. People needed to go to Zig Kanstul for that. And now Mike Corrigan in KC. UMI Benges were Benges in name only while Zig bought the tooling AND took the workers. UMI never cared and eventually Conn -Selmer dropped it altogether. Same with Giardinelli mouthpieces. Whoever is making them now is just using the name and making, albeit still good mouthpieces, ones that should never be confused for the real deal.

    Thank you very much for this video. I'm surprised to find a Giardinelli review on youtube these days. The brand is nearly out of business in Germany today. For me as an amateur trumpet player the 1S was the only mouthpiece I used for 20 years. I still use it on my rotary valve trumpet for general purpose up to today. For Big Band music I changed to Yamaha 14A4a 20 years ago.

      Thank you for your comment, Peter! Giardinelli’s heyday is long-gone, but that’s all the more reason I’m interested in their products! I’m curious, what sort of genres does your “general purpose” rotary trumpet playing entail? I’m surprised that the 1S serves as your mouthpiece for general use, given my view of the rotary trumpet sound concept, but it just goes to show that different things work for different players.

      @@SamuelPlaysBrass I started my amateur trumpet "career" in a church brass ensemble. Maybe it was lack of knowledge or lack of consulting by my teacher that I've choosen a Bach 10 1/2 EW mouthpiece when I bought my first trumpet (a Bach Stradivarius). I always played the upper register in this ensemble (to be honest upper register meant up to a2, later c3). After a year or so I changed to the Giardinelli 1S. When I started playing in a classical orchestra I had to switch to the lower register. So, the 1S was difficult and I added a Bach 3 for that purpose. I use the rotary trumpet now for the church brass ensemble, the orchestra and at home with piano accompaniment, most of the time with the 1S sometimes with the 3. When I started playing in a Big-Band, also high register, my conductor gave me the Yamaha 14A4a. I play it with the Bach Strad. On the Strad the 14A4a is now my general purpose mouthpiece as long as I'm playing in higher registers. Today I'm playing the Bach Strad. and the Olds Recording in a Big Band but I notice that I should change s.th. when I play 2nd trumpet there.

      @@peterschulz1725 That makes sense. The Bach 3 is a very good mouthpiece. I use the cornet variant for the soprano cornet in Eb if I desire a darker sound and better lower register.

    I love your mouthpiece videos! I would love to see some more for trombone. Also I have seen some ads for “wedge” mouthpieces have you tried them?

    • @SamuelPlaysBrass
      @SamuelPlaysBrass  Před rokem +1

      Thanks Ben! I just realized the only trombone mouthpiece I’ve ever reviewed was the Kelly 51D, and even then I only demoed it on euphonium because I didn’t have a large-shank trombone. I’ll have to change that very soon!

    • @SamuelPlaysBrass
      @SamuelPlaysBrass  Před rokem +1

      Also, never tried a Wedge, but got incessant advertisements from them for over a year. Personally I’m not a fan of those form-fitted or asymmetric mouthpieces that I’ve tried from similar brands.

    I once got a Giardinelli mouthpiece with an old trumpet. It was in poor, almost disgusting condition and I offered it online for a low price. I got several offers within minutes and regretted to not have set up an auction on eBay…

    • @SamuelPlaysBrass
      @SamuelPlaysBrass  Před měsícem

      @@hauke3644 It must have been of a particular uncommon size or vintage. Weird how it always seems to go one way or the other as far as selling instantly/making you wonder whether you ought to have charged more or never selling. I seem to not be reaching the right market of collectors on eBay, because I’ve had a lot of trouble getting what I thought were some really cool pieces sold-a Giardinelli NY 6B, Connstellation pieces of various sizes, etc.

    I just bought a Giardinelli NY 7M copy made by Jim New, formerly of Kanstul. Soft bite, tight throat entrance, nice big band sound. NOT suitable for Chet Baker stuff. Ha.

    • @SamuelPlaysBrass
      @SamuelPlaysBrass  Před rokem

      That’s interesting-no Giardinelli I’ve ever encountered has a tight throat entrance. All of the ones in this video and several that I’ve seen since then have all had very sloped throat entrances that give them a more Chet-like sound at soft volumes…
