  • Looking at some miniatures and sources for a potential next army project. I haven't decided if I want to try do to Imperial Tibet and Tang China or go with Sassanians versus late Romans or Arabs, but this video is exploring some ideas.

Back in the good old/bad old days when Wargames Research Group were the only show in town, Sassanians were something of a super-army. With their abundant horse archers, super-heavy clibanarii and hordes of chain-ganged peasant foot they were hard to beat!

I think this would be a really cool project. The Sassanians are a pretty cool army, a core of extremely heavily armored cavalry fighting in a very dense compact formation, backed up with horse archers. They Sassanians used a form of massed volley based horse archery, where as the Byzantines used Hunnic style horse archery taking direct aim at individual targets. Infantry varied in quality from your generic levies to a few regiments of tough armored infantry as well as hill tribesman. I would definitely be excited to see a Sassanian project!.

I painted a very nice Sassanid Army but have not made the video yet. I’ll do that when I back home for you

@@thomaswilliams5005 I recommend searching Michael Bonner here on CZcams, he’s done a few interviews and public lectures based on his book.

A couple of observations on the miniature ranges. I used to like Alternative Armies a lot as they were still producing a lot of the old Table Top Miniatures range. Given that range started in the 1980s some of the historical miniatures won't reflect more recent research, and some can be generally older in style. Their newest sculpts are almost exclusively in their SciFi stock whereas the ancients are firmly those far older moulds. Also, and it may not be relevant for you, the current owner was stupid enough to use the company twitter account to post some right wing views about immigration and race. Personally, I'm not shopping there any more. The Eureka stuff is more contemporary in production. Although they don't appear to hold full stock, I believe they do cast to order. Mixing Eureka with other manufacturers can be hit or miss, as ever.

@@theDexMcHenry yeah I’m not sure how scaling on Eureka differs compared to other 15mm figures. Might have to see if anyone on CZcams has painted stuff from their ranges
