Hey, Scotty Kilmer - I'm having trouble finding number 5. Common Sense
Can you get that on amazon or ebay?
can this work on a bmw 323i 2000??
Can I get a link where to where you got that excavator? LOL XD
I have a question. What would you recommend when there are a lot of scratches in the spark plug hole itself. I removed some spark plugs of my motorcycle the other day and I was really careful. The scratches must have been already there. Would this affect how the engine runs or is it no problem at all? Thank you for your answer.
Hey Scotty will this work for a 2001 gt mustang v.6 liter??????
Scotty, your a hero to all your hard working fans who need that little bit of help so they don't financially break down. from day one you have kept true to your fans! Thank you for everything you do! I'm sure everyone else feels the same way. Be well mighty auto trooper!!!!
So this is what my dad used when he said he installed a helicoil on my 92 Nissan D21 truck. It had blown a plug out as described. He passed in 09'. Sure miss my pops. Thanks for the explanation Scotty.
Who else is here because their Ford 4.6 5.4 or 6.8 just did this?😭😂 it was the 4.6 for me
All Triton engine owners gathering here 😂😒
Damn called it :(
Guilty as charged

Subaru Legacy! lol
For real bro. I have cylinder 8 though.. Prayer
There's a neat tool you might want to look into. It's called a threadsaver, it's a collapsible tap that you can easily run down into good threads when the top threads are chewed up. Once run down, put the expander rod in then turn the tap reverse, cleaning up the damaged threads. I've got two sizes of them from working on motorcycles, they've really saved an otherwise crummy job of helicoiling the plug holes.
This job was of course about replacing threads, and try packing the tap with grease to catch most of the metal chips, preventing them from falling into the engine, although alloy chips won't do damage to be honest.
I’m driving a 2013 Corolla with NGK Ruthenium HX plugs, a 14mm socket generally works to install them, but when changing them out I found the #1 seized in place so I searched your videos and this one showed me the way. However, the Helicoils I needed for my car & plugs were M12 x 1.25 which is a shade smaller than the ones you used in this video- posting this comment to remind other DIYers to check their sparkplug’s Specifications for thread diameter & thread pitch so they can get the correct Helicoils the first time. Thanks Scotty, the knowledge you share is a treasure.
You should have said
"I'll answer them as soon as my voice comes back." :P
The hustle is real
Take care of that Golden Voice Scotty ! A machinist friend told me to put some wheel bearing grease on a tap when doing this. It catches the majority of the cuttings. I tried it & it works. See ya Saturday!!!...
Yeah, I think the grease is standard operating procedure. I also have a small diameter wand for my vacuum cleaner that can get in there, and a cheap USB camera that I can see inside with. I would not have thought to crank it with no plug inserted -- great idea for final "clean."
Also you can stuff a greased rag down the spark plug hole and pull it out when the job is finished.
I've heard of the grease solution as well (actually, using cold grease). The problem with the grease is that it may actually trap tiny pieces of thread down inside. Another possibility is a balled-up piece of duct tape on a stick or a length of brass tubing. I like the solution of starting the engine, though, and blowing them out; I suspect that would remove virtually all of them in a few seconds.
Better than using grease is to pressurize the cylinder with a vacuum cleaner. Doing this will blow shavings out of the spark plug hole while avoiding any grease that can make metal shavings stick (rather than leave). Simply get a vacuum cleaner that can be set up to blow (many canister and shop vacs allow the hose to be connected to the air outlet). Connect the hose to the throttle body, and open the intake valve(s) on the cylinder you are working on. Make sure the exhaust valve(s) are closed so that you don’t lose pressure in that cylinder. AND MAKE SURE THAT THE INTAKE VALVE(S) ARE NOT SO FAR OPEN THAT THEY INTERFERE WITH THE TAP. After tapping the hole, disconnect the vacuum and crank the engine with the throttle to the floor to blow out any remaining shavings.
Yeah then how are you suppose to get the grease out the hole
Sounds like your sick Scotty
+BILLSTMAXX :) Hi Bill!
Hello
he has lower voice :D
Yep 👍 his sick or minor cold lol
And still making videos
Thank you Scotty. I fixed my own spark plug thread today using this video as a reference.
Being a mechanic for 14 years I love your vids because you get right to the point, fun to watch. sorry about loss,, tho.. keep it going brother.
what loss
I always use nickel ant-seize on the plug threads and silicon paste on the wire boots seems to work well so far. I know it's a customer car and you can't control that. Thanks Scotty those heli-coil repair kits are used quite a bit on Rolls Royce jet engines, and throughout aviation, they are a life saver.
scotty is the greatest mechanic on you tube.
love this dudes attitude
I admire you for going right back to your videos after your loss. Keep up the good work! I'd love to come visit if I ever make my way down to Texas!
What was his loss?
Thanks, Scotty!
I had a spark plug pop out of a 93 caprice classic with 96000 that I just bought. The plugs are all rusted so I shot brake clean at it and then put marvel mystery oil in a spray bottle and sprayed it then 3 hrs later did it again and let it soak for 24 hrs, it turned almost immediately with a square fluted extractor next was a thread chaser coated with MMO back and forth real slow to pick up the rust that got all through the threads, did it once and it was covered in debris! Did it again and it came out basically clean. Then put the spark plug in hand tight to check the threads, what really saved me was the advice of leaving the plug out and starting the car, I was scared it had rust down in the cylinder! I'm "tool poor" so don't have a magnet or air compressor to clean it , I didn't remove anything from the distributor, started it up and let it run 15 or 20 sec shut it off put the plug in and wire on then started up and it ran great!
Sorry for your loss Scotty. Thanks for still getting a video out to us, though! Take it easy, man.
You have a lot of fun in your videos. You teach a lot too. I have learned a LOT watching and I have never been a car guy. I now can do a lot of things on my car that keep it going strong.
Scotty, you are so awesome! Thanks again for helping fix my car!!
Just had my 97 celica blow a spark plug out on the highway! Thank goodness the legend himself has one of these bad boys and shows us how it’s done.
This worked like a charm!!! Thank you for doing this video, I used the product the way you showed with NO issues. All is good and my son's car is back on the road.
Very informative. Great job Scotty.
You have no idea how many lives you just saved with this video my friend :D thank you so much! Super professional!
Yeah Scotty I'm still watching some of your earlier videos nice to see you brother hope everything is well through this most unbelievable time in our history
you sound I'll! I appreciate you still making the video! hats off to you sir!
Scotty is a bad ass!! A role model for sure
My Condolences Scotty, I really enjoy your informative videos.
enjoy every vid u upload.
Hey Scotty Kilmer, I'm trying to rethread my spark plug hoel right now but I' wonder how you secured your tap to that torque wrench extension so well. I'm having trouble figuring out a way to get it back out of the hole once I am finished with it. Any suggestions
Hope everyone's doing well through the depressions of the twenties hyperinflation pandemics and everything else
Thanks for the help…I did it myself with a repair kit that was a little different for a ford van e250…I was glad I didn’t have to break the tab thing off like yours with the long needle nose pliers…definitely did the little prayer though!
sorry for youre loss scotty
+don pidgeon WHO DIED
his sister i think he said in the comment section of the vid
+Re His sister
i believe so yes
I did this on an antique outboard motor, and it worked great and saved the engine from going to the scrap heap.
Great video. I gotta give this a try. The kit at autozone gives me a different type of insert. My spark plug blew out of the cylinder and no mechanic were willing to re-thread. They all said I had to pull the head.
thx scott! ive been watching your videos for years. And love your help! But this is the most important video ive watched. my 2000 ford expedition blew out a spark plug and ripped the coil pack out with it. And now needs rethreaded! And i thought i was screwed untill i saw this video. Ty Brother !
Man, I absolutely love your channel
get well soon, also I always pray before I test something I'm working on lol
LOVE this channel(& you too Scotty)!
Scotty does that tool also work for motorcycles. I also noticed the Screaming Eagle on the back. One Vet to another Thank you for your service.
Maaan, you are an artist ~ THANK YOU ! Love the part of how you blow out the metal bits inside the cylinder.... Whahoo !
One of the only real mechanics left, everyone just wants to make money this guy for no charge to us, shoes us how to save money, i would love you thank this guys personally has gotten me out of trouble plenty of times.
My go to mechanic videos never subscribed anyone but him
Will this product work on a snow blower spark plug? Thanks for all the great content
Thank you Scotty your channel is the Best period
My condolences and get well soon, Scotty.
Good info (done this too many times on Ford Triton V8's)
+MrMetalBurrito They have extended reach spark plugs. The engine might be tough but the spark plugs are not. Stupid design by Ford. Those plugs like to break off in the head and its usually the back 2 which is hard to access and fix when it does break off in there.
+argonian bilbo Didn't he say it was a Toyota, not a Ford?
Seegal Galguntijak no the original comment in this comment thread was a ford. Scotty was working on a toyota.
+argonian bilbo extended reach spark plugs? I thought the problem was they have very few threads on the cylinder head making it easy to strip the head itself.
HowardSupra yeah that could be. Look up ford extended reach plugs. Corrosion seems to get down there and freeze them in place. Not sure about the thread count in the head. Never heard about that
Awesome channel...I always check it before a repair...even if I have alldata instructions and tools...advices like the one at 2:14 are invaluable! Thanks!
I think I'm in love with Scotty Kilmer.
+Unyamurdle if that's your picture, wish I could get into a time machine, get young again, and meet you.
HAHA scotty you are awesome!i love your videos and you are really funny and awesome!
+Scotty Kilmer Scotty is trying to get it in. hahahahaha
+Scotty Kilmer your videos are awesome!
+Robert Pottinger LOL
Get better soon Scotty what will we do without your videos!?
Sorry for your loss Scotty. Thanks for still getting a video out to us, though
Thanks for this info Scotty. Hope you're doing better, I pray for strength for you and your family. Shalom bro.
You have great videos. Thanks Scotty
I re-threaded a blown-out spark plug in my Miata recently. I used a Time Sert. The kit is expensive but the inserts are cheap. Very easy to do. I put grease on the tap when I threaded it, then vacuumed out the combustion chamber with with a small adapter hose on my shop vac, and finally, like Scotty did, started the engine with the spark plug out to blow out any remaining metal chips.
damn that 80 HP really shreds the plugs eh
Very nice video! In puttng one on my f150 and was wondering what to do about the shavings. FINALLY, found this vid 👍
I had no idea that could happen. Cool fix!
Life saver once again.
I enjoyed watching your videos Scotty
hey scotty how often should you change a air filter in a car
Scotty love the channel
was hoping you can help me out with my 99 civic lx
when i switch it from park to drive it takes a second or slips sometimes but when driving it changes gears flawlessly, do you recommend flushing the transmission fluid?
I like you get right to the point and even share some good tricks of the trade
Hi there my spark plug just blew out today on my Chevy 2002 Cavalier Can I fix it like you did or take it to the mechanic? Thanx for your help an tips
Now what happens if it ever blows out again? Will that insert come out or are you then into removing the head ?
Yes william langridge
+BILLSTMAXX :) I've never had one blow out again when I did this, but if so, yea, time to pull the head
+BILLSTMAXX :) Love your channel. :)
Time for a new car unless it's a classic!
Using an insert is fine. Recommend use of green lock-tote. The insert will stay locked to the head. Not too much without anti seize or the plug will seize to the insert. As always, follow product directions on curing and assembly
Scotty, you're the man!,
Are you able to make a video on how to change out the electric wiring for a ignition switch on a 01 buick regal ls 3.8? thanks much an keep the great videos coming
Love yur Diggrr !!!
Thanks for video
It’s time to replace my plugs.
Hope they aren’t seized
I made a video showing how to do the same thing on a Honda Engine. Prepared to get a bunch of people who don't know anything telling you how to "properly" remove the chips. (I like your method! I just used compressed air!)
Knocking the building down? This guy is my hero
Sorry on your loss Scotty, its life that hit so hard sometimes ... Hope you get over. Cheers
Sorry for your loss man!
Some kits recommend putting high temp rtv on the threads of the insert. What would be the consequences of not putting rtv?
Hie Scotty can I use gasket maker or thread locker liquid on that blown out plug...
Love your videos
Life saver! Thanks alot
2:35 - okay... didn't see that one coming! O.o
hi scotty,
i saw you have a few motorcycles. can you do repair and maintenance videos on those?
Thanks for the great advice
My condolences Scotty. Thanks for the great video's.
Cool! We had to do this to our '03 Neon. Freaked me out when it blew out that plug lol.
“Do a little prayer” lol every mechanic before starting the engine
You forgot the last part - then trade in the car as soon as possible!
Milford Civic lmao. Any1 got ideas for if u tried this and got ur threads just a slight bit crooked 2 where u cant get plug in cause hole allows no 0 room to lean/tilt socket and plug
@@PplCantDriveOkc take to a reputable mechanic u trust, a machine could do it too but make damn sure u trust the guy
Damon Richter i have asked a few and no1 will even touch it. As far as some1 i trust i dont have any1... I normally do all work myself which is how i got the crooked thread.... In okc okla if any1 knows a mechanic 2 help..
@@PplCantDriveOkc if you have no other option and need the car to work you could try putting jb weld on the spark plug but that’s the very last option because after that there’s no way it’s coming back out so you should probably get a new reliable spark plug
So doing this ain't a good idea?
What about in a Subaru flat 4 will it blow the shavings out even though its horizontal
i love this man
keep it up please you are the greatest!
thanky you so much i did not want to have to take the cylinder head off your a blessing and hope God blesses you for the information you help people with +Scotty Kilmer
Aye Scotty, I hope you get this. I did this same fix on my mothers car, a 2003 Mazda Tribute v6. Her 4th cylinder spark plug blew out and I was able to rethread the hole, put in the heli coil, and it seemed better. But I'm still getting a misfire reading on the 4th cylinder. Would you know of anything else it could be? Or maybe something I've done wrong?
Hey Scotty I have a question I am working on a friends 2014 Chevy Cruz Ltz and as I was unscrewing the spark plug it broke off any suggestions on how to fix this
if you couldn't modify the tool to be long enough, could you remove the valve cover for better access?
Scotty Kilmer! you sir are a Champ! Best wishes :-)
sending out good energy to everyone in the world that's trying to make a difference for the good of all humanity this is the future and this is the time now to make the difference for all
Thanks Scotty
Recommend use of a good cutting oil for threading the hole.
I feel like I might have to do this on the #6 cylinder of the 5.3 in my Tahoe. It felt like the previous owner had cross-threaded the sparkplug last time he changed them. I ran a thread-chaser through and was then able to thread in the sparkplug and get it torqued down, but it felt like maybe only half the threads were really there. I'm hoping it holds, accessibility there is not nearly as easy as the Toyota in this video.
Have you done this repair on a ford 2V 4.6 or 5.4 V8.
Thank you very much, it was intersting everybody
F4i owners have added this video to maintenance and repair playlist
You da man Scotty!
This thread kit can you use it for a 2001 ford expedition V8 ?
I always thought these were un reliable until I hear good of them from scotty
Sorry for your loss Scotty. She is smiling down at you because you teach your fans so much about cars
Scotty, do you have any trick to remove a stuck 16mm deep socket on the spark plug hole?
"make a little prayer" don't know why it make laugh so much 😂😂😂
