my understanding prior to the pandemic French defense firm ...Naval group had a contract with the phillipine armed forces that is why they put a corporate office in manila 2-3 years ago already and with the help of the french government they also initiated combined training with the philippine navy to trained selected groups of sailors for the submarine,, I hope that has been done and this will result for philippine navy to start defending our island againts any hostiles ... merci boucoupe

The Philippines has a total length of the coastline of 36,289 km. from North to South consists of 7,640 islands. Meaning The country needs to have own Ship Yard Factories, including Naval, Marine and Air Forces to protect the Philippines entire territories by Land, Sea and Air.
That's why i don't understand why were lagging behind other superpowers in terms of naval supremacy.. The past leaders are too damnn idiot or corrupt.. no one to blame but them.. with the geographic location of Philippines we could be the leading economy connecting Taiwan, China, Japan, SK to other Asean Nations and not China dmn... too short-sighted
They are called shipyards, not ship factories. Japan and Korea have them. Taiwan is trying to develop them.
I strongly agree about this. We have a potential shipyard already (formerly Hanjin Heavy Industries Corp.) located at Subic, Zambales. Through the support of our new administration, we can utilize this shipyard to create more jobs for the people and produce strong naval assets in the near future.
But other president don't build or try to strengthen the military forces, they just starting saying good words, but when they are now a president they think only for themselves. So I hate president, they never strengthen military forces. : ^ )

I hope Philippine Navy fast track the acquisition of these Scorpene submarines since the DSME offered subs have issues according to Indonesian Navy. However, I'd like PN to acquire more surface combatants from HHI like
- 4 more HDC-3100 corvettes
- 6 HDP-1500 OPVs
- 6 HDF-3800 frigates
Plus possible freebies like
- more Pohang corvettes
- more K136 MLRS
- AH-1 Cobra attack helicopters

The PN will likely get more free Pohang corvettes since they have chosen HHI again to build the OPV, the HDP 1500 Neo.
@@LiteracyCorner Anytime! Indonesian Navy is shifting from DSME1400 to Scorpene subs mainly citing power supply problems connected to batteries and other issues. Glad to hear po na merong additional Pohangs, I just hope they will modify the HDP-1500 design a bit by rasing the whole foredeck align to the main gun deck.

@galacticplayz 21 RTN currently and only operate 3 warships with VLS. If PN plans push through that's a total of 16 warships with VLS. But I doubt if they can implement all those planned quantities.
@galacticplayz 21 Hopefully they can. Probably, the corvettes are additional HDC-3100 and they might offer the HDF-3800 frigates which cost around $500M per ship based on HHI offered to RSN.
I'm so proud of our country investing submarine to protect us. We really need this because our country is surrounded by waters. We should invest at least 3 submarines.

Philippines acquiring a modern attack submarine is a big step to defend its coastal borders. Having a modern navy is the best defense for an island nation. I hope the Philippines continue to grow its naval forces. Maybe a couple of P-3 Orions, more ASW helicopters, fast-attack missile gunboats, anti-ship missile armed combat aircraft, etc. if Ukraine can DIY unmanned naval drones, the Philippines can do so too.
When there will ne an attack to the Philippines,to there will a ramping up of all these tech like Ukraine... As longs as there is no attack, there is no need due to budget constraints...

It’s a bit unfair to compare a Scorpene to a Virginia-class. Very few fast-attack submarines are a peer to a Virginia. But there are other high-quality diesel-electric attack submarines you could have used for comparisons. Scorpene is a highly capable attack submarine for a vast majority of the world’s navies. Good to see that the Philippine navy has decided to acquire them.
Agreed, they should at least compare it with the other competitors from Hanwha Ocean or Spain's
Navantia offer, hell, it is even comparable to the Russian Kilo Class too

I hope PNavy fast tracks the acquisition of Scorpene since it takes several years to build and complete a submarine. Also Indonesian Navy has cancelled its plans to make a follow-on orders of their DSME1400 and now shifting to acquire Scorpene. Hopefully, PN procures 3 units in Horizon 3 to really make a strong presence and deterrence in our territorial seas especially underwaters.

Engine problem daw, but it's from HHI and not from Daewoo.which we are getting from if we buy 2 units from Daewoo industries.

We need an Stronger Navy and Air Force that can Face China and also im hoping our country can built its own Nuclear powered Submarines and Aircraft Carrier since the Administration is rebuilding Nuclear plants.
Phillippines can not financially provide for operating aircraft carriers, and nuclear powered submarines are also hard to maintain but im sure phillippines can operate only a few, but not many.
For phillippines to build its own Nsubs, NAC's, it must have a stable economy and advanced research.

Chang Bogo is based on older Type 209, not Type 214. Tadtad ng isyu yung mga bagong subs ng Indonesia.
Better to take the Korean KSS-III DSME 2000 kung sa Korea din yung bagsak natin sa pagbili ng submarines.
The problem is the Navy doesn't have AIP requirements on their Fast Attack Submarine Acquisition Program. Probably due to the fact it is too much for us to handle considering the fact that we are newbies in operating Submarines. Hell, Navantia (3rd competitor) is offering their own submarines as well but it has AIP and VLS capabilities, meaning it's capabilities are way ahead of the other contenders.
The problem of Navantia offer is, their AIP systems aren't operated yet by the Spanish Navy themselves, therefore the offer of subs with AIP would only good on papers and would require us to be the test subjects for that, also, operating such systems would require the Philippine Navy to spend around 80 Million Euros for the maintenance and logistics of such systems, you can't even imagine how much would that be in pesos, so therefore I'm kinda skeptical about the Navantia's Offer with AIPs or any submarines offered that comes with AIPs.
The sole fact that the current Government hasn't given any signs of spending two folds in Defense is already alarming if we ever choose the submarines with AIP on it. Who knows what might happen to the maintenance of such systems, it will only risk the lives of our sailors whose value cannot be replaced by any amount money given for such systems.
However, Naval Group's offer comes with "can be fitted by AIP in the future" meaning, if we have such experience already in submarines operations the Navy can fully upgrade the subs with AIP. I'd say this is more of an ideal and logical choice rather than like jumping the whole process of operating to a more advanced knowledge, we should start at beginner capabilities first.
Lastly, Naval Group already scored a sale of submarines to India, while Navantia and Hanwha hasn't since (consider also the issue of the Chang Bo Go Class with Indonesia), the advantage of the presence of the Indian customer is the fact that India is planning to arm their Scorpene submarines with Brahmos missiles. As you already know we are a future operators of such missiles in ASEAN, therefore such plans by India is a good news for us in the future capability upgrade of the Scorpenes.
Malaysia also are using French Scorpenes submarines if I remember well. Indonesia is about to sign or already signed maybe.

Congratz Literacy Corner. My interest in subs is actually in favor of deuterium mining in the Marianas Trench. Can a scorpene be used for that purpose?
No, the Marianas Trench is many thousands of metres deep (almost 11.000 metres deep at its deepest point), Scorpene-class subs have a maximum diving depth of 400-600 metres and will definitely be crushed beyond 800-900 metres. Also, they're attack submarines, meant do attack ships and even other submarines, though potentially also capable of espionage (intercepting radio, mobile phone, etc.), but scientific research or anything like that they're not suitable for.
Is there a much higher concentration of deuterium in the Marianas trench then anywhere else in the sea? I thought the concentration of deuterium was fairly even throughout the world's oceans? I wonder if it would be viable to harvest/mine it though, the Mariana's Trench is so insanely deep that it costs tremendous amounts of money to mine anything from it's bottom. And producing deuterium through concentration heavy water although not exactly cheap of energy efficient is probably a lot cheaper and more efficient than mining it from the bottom of the deepest trench on earth.
