Tugboat Captain Chris Baker | New York on the Clock

- čas přidán 27. 09. 2009
- Chris Baker pilots tugboats for Staten Island-based McAllister Towing, one of New York City's two towing companies. Our film crew joined Captain Baker as vessels from the United States and Canadian Navies called to port for Fleet Week 2009. Captain Baker's tug, the Rosemary Ellis, escorts ships and helped dock the U.S.S. Iwo Jima, an 844-ft Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, and the U.S.S. Roosevelt, a 500-ft Arleigh Burke-class destroyer.
There is something about the captains seat on a tug boat I love. The view all around and controls at your fingertips, the horsepower, it's like a fighter cockpit on water
greetings
from Cardiff,
south wales, uk..
thankyou for sharing this 🙂
You're welcome! We're glad you enjoyed your time on the NYC harbor.
I was stationed on a US Navy Tug YTB-820, Guantanamo Bay, 92-93. leading seaman the last 8 months or so.
Very busy back then.
Awesome job, I loved it. Thought of a career as a civilian, but then I met the Mrs. Nice video Captain.
I watch these guys work every day from my office in Hoboken. As a licensed six-pack captain I watch in envy.
Come join us!
@@Tuglife912 hi i want to join you
i wish there was more footage of the boat and out to the ocean. You could still have the guy talk in the background. Most of the footage focuses on his face but I'm here to see the tugboat.
Awesome Chris ! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for sharing, enjoyed it.
Thanks for the video! Great insight

BRAVO . I love it the tug boat .
Great video, We live in Maine just 30 min. south of Portland. Love doing the Mail boat run out on Casco bay.
I drove a tug for the first time today, and it’s definitely different than traditional helm driving.
I operate tugs on the Illinois river..nice video..thanks for posting
I got my Merchant Mariner Credential and TWIC Card so now I'm ready to start working on Tugs! I'm going to try Moran Towing Corporation in Savannah, Georgia or Jacksonville, Florida with my alternative being McAllister Towing in Jacksonville, Florida and Crescent Towing in Savannah, Georgia. Awesome video!
Great seeing the United States Navy Wasp Class Landing Helicopter Dock Amphibious Assault Ship USS. Iwo Jima LHD-7 from Naval Station Mayport, Florida being docked in New York City, New York for Fleet Week! That's usually done by McAllister or Moran Tugs.
That was,,,,GREAT !!! Thanks.
Sno
I wish I was doing what you do. I love your video, and more power to you. It is nice to see people, that found their love in life, and live it every day.............kind of makes me jealous.
Awesome like the railways its a lifestyle ,nice video
New York tugboats are the most beautiful tugs in the world!
No there not the tugboats of liverpool docks and the river mersey are the envy of the seagoing world.
No way European tugs are so much nicer
love your boat wi good job aye.
Keep pushing brother
7 and 7 is not a bad schedule I work a 28 and 14 on the Mississippi and have for the last 20 years. It is rough especially missing out on all of the holidays
In the good old days every boat had its own cook who would put out quite an impressive spread. some of the best food I ever had was on a tug.
Then the strike came and the southerners showed up and never left. Thats why theres companies paying the same or less now than they were in the late 90s/2000s
Very nice.
"Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life".
This guy has the life
Great video, thanks for taking the time to put it out there. Is there any voith in the New York Harbor?
nice video
1:12 Rosemary in Virginia these days, according to website
That Bayonne Bridge 4:03 which spans the Kill van Kull, was recently raised to provide for the increased height of Panamax shipping vessels.

you have a nice movie
in my next life I want to be a tug captain in NY harbour.
Me too.
No you dont
This boat is now working in the Houston Ship channel
I was a snipe, stationed on a U.S. Army Large Tug in Thailand during the Vietnam era. I've always liked tugs, and have sailed for many years. After the service, I got my merchant ticket, but 'Nam had slowed way down and shipping was at a standstill, so went into other things, but living near the port of Los Angeles/Long Beach, I see a lot of tugs in action.
How can I apply for a position on the boat ???
are its using a VSP sir?
Get that Cubs cap off cap!
since when did eminem become a tugboat captain
Since 8 nautical miles relaunched
#50 Enjoy your career, young Captain. Moving ships into dock is just one aspect of operating a Tug. US Navy needs skilled Captains to assist their vessels into the dock. Anchor's Away!
MY FATHER WORKED FOR MCALLISTER. HE RETIRED IN 1974 AND PASSED AWAY IN 1977. DAD HELD AN UNLIMITED PILOTS LICENSE. I WAS TOLD HE USED TO DOCK THE OCEAN LINERS WHEN THEY WERE TROOP SHIPS DURING WW2. DAD WORKED FOR ANOTHER COMPANY DURING THE WAR.
BOATS IS A HARD LIFE. MY MOTHER HATED HIS JOB AND TRIED ALL HER LIFE TO GET HIM TO SWITCH CAREERS BUT DAD WOULD NOT HAVE IT. AS A RESULT I KNEW MY FATHER ONLY HALF THE TIME.
HE WAS A GOOD PROVIDER.
RIP DAD.
PS DAD SUNK THE CATHERINE MCALLISTER IN 72
BOYCOTT PC, how did he sink it?
Is your keyboard stuck on caps? Or?
Sometimes I watch the videos of harbor pilots boarding ships. It can be the most hair-raising thing to watch.
The United States Navy Arleigh Burke Class Aegis Guided Missile Destroyer USS. Roosevelt DDG-80 from Naval Station Rota, Spain originally from Naval Station Mayport, Florida is 509.5 Feet not 500 Feet.
2009 likes more like 2016
Does anyone know where I can get a good "Tug Job?" These are hard to come by.
No theyre not you just gotta find someone to get you experience. Theres 500 tugs in every city
cool
hay capt its harry look like a movie star
I am GREEN WITH ENVY and kicking myself to sleep now.
DAD WAS A MEMBER OF LOCAL 333
He must get a lot of shit being a Cubs fan in NY.
I'm oilar , how to contact your company for placement
somehow i like this job !!!!!!!!!
Tug boats are always U.S. flag - local waters - best career for a young person since that is very well protected under the Jones Act. McAllister, Moran etc. are Jones Act vessels. Kings Point is the Maritime Academy like say Annapolis for the Navy. There are also excellent State Maritime Academies too. I used to represent Kings Point it started during WWII for Liberty Ships and the need for officers for cargo ships. 6000 were killed by enemy submarines sometimes right off NYC during WWII - nobody mentions them of course. Sorry for the history lesson....
I did not live during WWII of course - I represented KP in the 1990s-2002 era.
Driving truck to and thru NY is a days work... I can't imagine that on top of everything, you also have the chance to drown?
Degree in journalism or tugboat captain?..hmmm..🚢
Do they have licensed engineers on tugs? Interested in a career in the industry and can't choose between obtaining my deck or engine license. Thanks
Yes they do
if you don't mind working off shore, crew/supply tugs and sea going tugs have licenced Engine people. my oldest son worked 11 plus years on them
no way arriva shitown 👍
amaizing Video!take look our video from POLAND .good watching... take captai)
Nice.
What's with that woman's voice in the background the whole time? Distracting.
Tugs are the incredible workhorses of any harbor. To save time start video at four:twelve. The tugs handle and park a massive container ship. (So sorry for the poor whale that got snagged at the bow.)

I'm an expert tug captain and always on red alert. I hope this helps
$800-$1000 a day. Easy. Tugboat captains have it made!
MasterofDisaster17 Doubtful. PNW AB’s and Mate’s make more than east coast. And our Captain’s make 6-700 a day. I doubt east coast boys are making 1000.
Michael Finnelly Your full of shit.
You have a job ya love.
One week on & one week ...is such a great situation.
Whatever you do don't ever quit this job.
God bless.
The Guy upstairs loves you & the guy downstairs hates the entire world.
Read New Testament. Fact & Truth and not so fairy tale.
No time for that bible thumper bullshit just hard men doing hard work. If you worked on a boat offshore and saw the sky at night youd realize you aint important and no religous fairy tale is gona change that
EYESIGHT PROBLEMS SORRY BOUT CAPS
ok
Fish is fish Meat is food
Nope.
My G**d those tugs look like floating antiques! Very little in this video to get a thumbs up - very little actual tug work.
I miss the Navy's YTB tugs, Nothing against the privately owned Tugs. But I am hesitant on civilian Tugs docking Navy ships. there is too much of a security risk in my opinion. the Navy use to operate it's own Tug fleet because of this possible threat. and I believe they should return to that practice. Let civilian Tugs service civilian ships. but let the Navy dock their own ships.
You clowns and your security BS. Always some bogeyman you created out of thin air.
Nobody ever mentions the Jones Act and the U.S. flag issues that protect your career actually?
The "Jones Act" is a law that requires U.S. citizens jobs on all ships that are inside our waters: coastal cruises such as all rivers: Mississippi Rivers etc. This includes freighters, barges etc. All ships must be built at U.S. shipyards in short. Cruise ships are in the "blue water trades" they make sure to hire only the cheapest labor they can find - and you can be sure all ships are built in foreign shipyards (again labor costs) and all the passengers are usually Americans. These are "Foreign Flag ships" They rule the cruise industry. No U.S. flag ships are in this trade. I'm giving you the simple story ok. Retired maritime lawyer age 60.
Thats no job for a married man.
Exactly why im about to get into that if I don't get back on the railroad.
what is monthly check look like?
