I love the way this game reuses old Looney Tunes stuff like Gruesome Gorilla and Count Bloodcount and can build entire levels based on them. It’s like when Kingdom Hearts bases whole worlds on Disney films and they clearly go the extra mile to represent the old material. So much of this game draws on the old to make something new. I much prefer that to how Lost in Time mostly did recreations of the old shorts beat for beat.

I had a very unique experience with this game since my PlayStation was old and beat up. The cutscenes usually froze up and wouldn’t play for me so I had to skip pretty much all of them.
When I was a kid, I had never heard of Count Bloodcount. But I was afraid of vampires, so hearing that a vampire was the final boss made me dread him. Even from the beginning there’s a slightly darker part of the Granwich opening cutscene that shows the Transylvanian Era entrance, and that plus the image of Count on his Boss Token in the inventory made me dread him even more. And the game slowly got darker in tone as it went on, it had a lot of quiet, ominous locations and set pieces. And the time of day also correlated with your journey - Aztec/first level was sunrise, Viking/midpoint was midday, Arabian/penultimate was sunset, and Transylvanian/final was night. So by the Arabian Era, plus the warning that the Lost in Time characters were harder this time, made me really nervous.
And the Transylvanian Era lived up to the hype for me. I still didn’t get to watch the intro cutscene with the Count so I still had no idea what I was in for with him. All I had was the dark, scary levels; the transition to night in ZooVania, the scary river ride, the brain swap puzzle. And Count’s Castle was so quiet and eerie and utterly terrifying to me. The music was really great at setting the scariest tone of the game.
Oh, and another thing. Sometimes my score glitched out so going around levels without a score made them scarier too. Once I finally arrived at Count’s level, I had to skip the cutscene again. And with no score, I remember hearing the torches in the room…
“NOW I WILL-“
And those three words nearly made me turn the game off. I was completely terrified as that was my first time seeing or hearing Count. It took me a while to work up the courage to defeat him. Even when I did, the final fight was scary to me. The spooky scenery outside, the red eyed gargoyles, Count’s creepy voice and the fact that he boasts about tasting your blood before he attacks you. This was like experiencing the climax of Scooby Doo on Zombie Island. And then the bad ending where Daffy gets eaten/drained.
What a ride.
This game and lost in time needs a remaster on the ps4/ps5.
