    • @hnaku8748

      We played for a result and failed. The system was a basic 4-2-3-1 mid block. Plain bread simple. Nothing similar to things we tried preseason, or even just last game against Inter (with 3-4-3 diamond midfield on ball).
      Everyone does playing out of back nowadays so it shouldn't even be counted.
      Positive personally for me is that we should just have been building on such base since preseason day one, with certain players who have played well in it included. Instead of 5d tiki tikka masala football. Perhaps this could be a start. But not holding my breath.

  • @Monochromatic_Spider
    @Monochromatic_Spider Před 23 dny +1

    Fixing the midfield is easy enough. Just stop this inane forward pressure mania. It achieves a few goals across a season but it makes it so easy to find space behind the forward pressure, at which point that entire section of players are completely dropped from existence. Then move the ball forward and there's maybe two midfielders and some defenders, and they'll struggle to do zonal and man marking at the same time, so they'll get pulled out of position often enough.
    What we should have done is play compact. Do enough high pressure to slow down their progression but mainly get the eff back in a compact defensive shape with minimal space between the lines. Back four holding a line, two 6'es holding the space in front of the line, and the rest falling deep and closing down, crowding and throttling the passing game of the opposition. But we didn't do that and that has nothing to do with personnel. It's purely a tactical choice by Maresca.
    Edit: And I want to stress, as much as Maresca has shown some willingness to not have a stick up his backside, he still used Nkunku and Palmer in what were clearly not positions that really got them involved in the part of the pitch where they are the most dangerous. Meanwhile he wanted Jackson and Enzo to be the main finishers? I mean, what is that? How much crack must you be on for that to even begin to make sense?

  • @hnaku8748
    @hnaku8748 Před 24 dny +1

    Bit numb to result nowadays (perhaps about to accept the invitation letter into mediocrity).
    I thought the performance was a mixed bag. Enzo as 10 was poor, never want him there again. Lavia looked promising. Sanchez was Sanchez. And so and so.
    Personally get a feeling Maresca is currently aiming to strike a correct balance. Result wise the goal difference was no better than when we lost to City in preseason. But we conceded and scored lesser. The system was more basic with lesser fancy ingredients. Is this for long term? We'll have to see.
    Can't take too much from this game, result or performance wise. Everything up in air still. I also thought the stadium atmosphere reflected that.

      Palmer was ALWAYS going have his output decreased for the benefit of the overall team. I've been saying it all pre season. Poch's chaos suited palmer perfectly. I don't know. Midfield is still whack out of possession and leaves wide gaps. Where was the promoted high press that Maresca insisted in pre-season? Same problems again that Poch had before Enzo injury. The supposed message from the board that Gallagher, Chalobah or even freaking Sterling don't fit the "high possession system" is mind blowing to me but i guess that's the price to pay to be a fan of a financial institution rather than a normal football club. Actually, although it's sad to say it, your assessment is pretty much spot on!
    Not really going out on a limb here, but Enzo Maresca, the new ex-Leicester City head coach, is pretty much starting as he means to go on. . .
    Not winning football matches . . .
    An anonymous Christopher Nkunku; Enzo Fernandez just doesn't belong in this team, based on 'on-the-park' performances; Romero Lavia not match fit, nor prepared; Pedro Neto flashy, but no real substance etc., etc; Cole Palmer a free role, 'to do the dirty work that Conor Gallagher (now sold to Atletico Madrid) used to do' but obviously without the same relish; and, the assisting, finishing touches that Raheem Sterling is better at doing; as ex- England manager Gareth Southgate found out, to his and the national side's cost. . .
    England failed to win a Euros Final second time, because their match winner wasn't even selected, who'd scored in the World Cup!
    Sterling has only been around Chelsea for a couple of years and one of the last survivors of previous Chelsea squads of '5 different head coaches' in that time:
    1.Thomas Tuchel, 2.Magic-free Graham Potter, 3.Super Frankie Lampard, 4.Maurizio Pochettino and now
    5.Enzo Maresca to stick in his tuppenyworth.
    Well, let it sink in, that with Sterling not playing yesterday, it is the first time The Blues lost to Manchester City recently; and Sterling not even on the bench and scoring against his old club as usual!!
    (And, probably because the Americans have destroyed in a couple of years, what it took USD $Multi-Billionaire Roman Abramovich 19 years to chock fill Stamford Bridge home stadium trophy rooms with multitudinous, quality silverware pots; (ie 2xUEFA European Champions League; 5×EPL, 2×Europa League, European Super Cup, FA Cups, World Club Championahip etc., etc.,) but not a single one added by new American owners, Todd Boehly and Behad Eghbali of Clearlake Consortium. . .
    It's about making money to the Yanks, not winning football matches, and they've ordained it so; in order to get £360k a week, 29 years of age Sterling, off the books; like tub-o-lard Romelu Lukaku, and before 2027. . . grabbing the pure profit from Conor Galkagher, Trevor Chalobah and residue of also ex- Chelsea Academy graduates Billy Gilmour, being sold on by Brighton to 'Antonio Conte's' Napoli, and Dominic Solanke, being sold on by Bournemouth to Tottenham Hotspur!!! or wherever), so you do the numbers . . .
    I'll be hog-tied and done from the rear, with the rough end of a pineapple, 'cos Chelsea are getting the sh*tty end of the stick here . . . If you'll pardon my mixed metaphors.

Another fact is that certain players will be left out. It’s not something to dwell on much, it’s part of the occupation hazard of the game. But Enzo hasn't even come close to his performances under Potter (let alone improving). Enzo is stuck in no-man's land - he's not truly a #10 and his best work is playing passes from deep. Did you not see how good he was for the second half of last season, when coincidentally Poch didn't need to jam three midfielders in with Enzo's injury. I should clarify. I don't think Enzo is a 6 for us. We need someone to shield the back line, make interceptions and tackles. I don't see him as dynamic enough for that role in the PL. Especially, if we're playing on the front foot with a high press and are suspectible to counter attacks. One of the big money midfielders (Enzo or Caicedo) needs to be on the bench or be sold because they don't work together. We have the entire first half of last season and yesterday's match as proof. It’s the first game of the season and I have a lot of hope for all of these players. We should be backing them
