Intersectional feminism. It’s all the rage on campus and on social media, but what is it? And is its new popularity a welcome development? Coming up next on the Factual Feminist.
Suddenly intersectionality is on the boards. News stories are turning up everywhere. Intersectional theory was first developed in the 1970s and 1980s by a group of African American feminist scholars and activists. They accused the women’s movement of neglecting black women and of misunderstanding oppression. Pathologies like and racism and sexism, they said, are not separate systems-they connect and overlap-and create a complex arrangement of advantages and burdens. White women, for example, are penalized for their gender-but privileged by their race. Black men, suffer from their race, but garner advantage from their gender. Black women-are in double-jeopardy-they are disadvantaged by both race and gender.
Patricia Hill Collins, professor at the University of Maryland and former president of the American Sociological Association, is one of the chief architects of intersectionality theory. The textbook she co-authored describes the United States as a “matrix of oppression.” Beneath a veneer of freedom and opportunity, there lies a rigid system of privilege and domination. Now most Americans don’t see it, but Collins and her co-author alert students to the fact that the true nature of their society has been hidden from them. “Dominant forms of knowledge have been constructed largely from the experiences of the most powerful.” The text promises to introduce students to deeper “subordinated truths” by avoiding what it calls “Western” and “masculine” styles of thinking which could obscure these truths.
According to the theory, those who are most oppressed have access to deeper, more authentic knowledge about life and society. In short: members of privileged groups (especially white males) should not only check their privilege, but listen to those they have oppressed-because those groups possess a superior understanding of the world.
Initially, the primary focus of intersectional feminism was on black women. But the number of victims quickly multiplied. This graphic from a popular Women’s Studies textbook includes 14 or 15 marginalized identities.
The Factual Feminist is concerned. Now there are social scientists who use a sensible, non-politicized version of intersectionality to understand complex social identities-I have no quarrel with them. But what concerns me is how intersectional feminism is taught and practiced on the college campus. I have many objections-I will limit myself to three.
Problem 1: It’s a Conspiracy theory: If intersectionality theory were merely a reminder to be sensitive to different kinds of social advantages and disadvantages, that would be fine. But it is much more than that. It is an all-encompassing theory of human reality-- constructed to be immune to criticism. If you question it, that only proves you don’t understand it-or are just part of the problem it seeks to correct.
That is why articles by skeptics almost never appear in textbooks like these. And certain groups-men, for example-are sinners who are marked with a capital P. If they dare to question the theory they will be told to check their privilege. Their job is to atone for their unearned advantages and learn from those they have oppressed. Some men are really taking this to heart. Consider this tweet:

The biggest caveat of Patricia Hill’s Collins standpoint theory it that your identity as a member of any number of oppressed groups becomes irrelevant if you do not believe in intersectionality to begin with.

Responding to a liberal article I questioned the idea that a Trump protester was arrested because she was a woman. I rightly pointed out that women are arrested less often and serve significantly lighter sentences for the same crimes. This was evidence that this woman was not arrested because she was a woman, but despite it. This is the quote from her " Nice mansplaining there, bro. Women should get less prison time because society is already stacked against us. Try sitting down and being quiet and listening to a woman, rather than disagreeing with her." So, unequal treatment is OK, and when a woman speaks I should shut up. How does this foster equality again?

After I replied to them with logical, well-thought arguments, I soon realized that they were stubborn as fuck, but still tried to make them understand things politely and logically. I consider myself a "classic liberal", but unlike you, I'm clearly way more honest. Because when one actually looks at the facts - she is on point.
The idea that objectivity is best reached through rational thought is a matter of logic. Taking another route is, by definition, irrational. It scares me when people talk like that, because they are declaring that they reject reason, the only foundation we all share.

I don't like how this concept, and the whole 'oppression olympics' thing generally, ignores the nuances of what people's real-life experiences are like. You can't just say person A who is white and male and straight has automatically had an easier, more privileged life than person B, who is black, bi and female. You'd have to know all the details of each person's life, relationships, health, genetics, educational and work opportunities, random good luck or misfortune etc.

It's why, as viciously as they might go after white males who speak out against them, it's not nearly so terrifically horrible as their reaction to women or minorities who do. A white male raising his voice is merely conforming to expectations as a privileged oppressor and can be merely shouted down or ignored. I disagree with one of the implied premises of the video’s argument: around 2:42 the Factual Feminist argues that the concept of intersectionality should be kept within academia and not politicised. I am concerned. Intersectionality is a powerful concept that asserts that all do not face racism and sexism separately: in society sexism faced is often racialized and racism faced is often sexualised. This, I believe, is incredibly important in order to dismantle unwarranted stereotypes that prevent people from achieving full self-actualisation. For instance, I understand that black women are likely to be seen as more exotic and promiscuous than white women because of the additional factor of race, but intersectionality can apply to an equal extent to black men too- they are associated with aggression because they are male, and then as animalistic, because they are black (what is suggested in 0:52 is another interpretation). This applies across racial boundaries. A white woman may be fat, and thus suffer from a lack of self-confidence. White men who are laid off from the manufacturing sector cannot for the sake of their finances move into the growing health service industry and work as a nurse due to the overwhelming backlash he is likely to face probably even from his own friends and family. This is a systemic problem that is not exclusive to traditionally privileged groups. Black and white doctors alike think black people feel less pain

Thus, we all need to become more aware of these stereotypes, especially in terms of how they change when race and gender intersect, so we can catch ourselves in the act when we draw on these stereotypes
So as an intersectional feminist, the way I see it, white men just need to ditch the negative stereotypes, and in fact we should all be working together under the theory of intersectionality to overcome these biases: conventionally beautiful women can celebrate the beauty of those that transgress against beauty standards etc etc. Unlike what the video suggests- that intersectionality is divisive, I believe that this idea will promote unity, through a greater understanding of the different challenges we face, through the comfort of knowing that we all are struggling together and trying our hardest to be better people in even the littlest of things. We all know that little things do count if done the right way.
So my main criticism is that, YES, intersectionality can devolve into excessive self- righteousness in college feminism- think the controversy over Halloween costumes in Yale, and there is an incredibly pressing need to address how to use intersectional theory wisely. But in my opinion, I just don’t think the video acknowledges how important it is to recognize these negative stereotypes, and thus how urgently we need intersectional theory to be transmitted from the ivory towers of academia, into the collective cultural consciousness, so we can all live without prejudices cutting off our potential.
I do feel that just because there are a few mistakes and bad apples in the recent years, doesn't mean that all feminist are like that. We don't all just come together arm in arm like an organised syndicate, blindly following what the pop-icons say. There is a new shift in Feminist ideas that aims to clean up all the fraying misconceptions of past feminism to develop a new evolved feminism adapted to target and solve the problems that is plaguing both men and women today and not just largely on women like in the past.

thanks so much for this video. I have lost one of my oldest female friends to this cult. The amount that she used to police my language whilst we were just sitting at home due to it being "very problematic" - i.e the problem being my unearned privileged position as a cis white male who was speaking - it just got too much. Ironically, she completely shut down my means of expressing myself as an individual as I was always seen as 'part of a larger oppressive group' and my words were consistently taken out of context. Another irony is that she completely disregarded the cultural nuance of how we folk from Liverpool speak. We are very loose and expressive when having casual conversations, which is exactly what these were, yet she tried to apply academic scrutiny to me whilst I was cooking in the kitchen. This is because of how readily and constantly she self-identified as a victim whilst identifying me as part of the oppressive privileged group, thus setting us up as constant foes.
It's hard not to notice how much more mentally and emotionally balanced this chick is compared to any contemporary feminist. I'm not even talking about the stuff she's saying; I mean just how she carries herself. The SJW ladies seem to have a hard time keeping their composure, like they have a hard time screaming because they are also sobbing, and the male feminists are a cross of rage and shame that keeps them from forming coherent sentences while they try to apologize for everything. The lady in this video just seems like a normal rational person.

She's my hero, too. I'm completely fed up with the very ideology I embraced with every fiber of my being in my teens. (This was in the 80's, while it was unfashionable to admit to SJW tendencies.) The constant divisions of groups into ever more oppressed subgroups is a natural outcome of their group-oriented thinking running headfirst into the complexity of individuals.
They can't help but think of people in groups, but there is some part of them that realizes that you can't just group people together as "Black" or "women". But rather than realizing that judging people by these groups is a bad idea, they just keep subdividing into ever more and more narrow groups.
They'd cut out a lot of trouble, and all the bigotry, if they'd just treat people as individuals.

The Moral Purity these people strive so hard for doesn't exist. There's a reason we speak of "Tolerance" and not "Acceptance". Tolerance is a virtue because it means caring about others and letting them be, even if you don't like them. Everyone can be accepting of others. But some people can't tolerate differing views. Dear Ms. Factual Feminist: I completely agree with your assessment of both intersectionality theory and the culture war that it stokes. It's very refreshing to hear your well-considered and perfectly sensible views.
I do have to part company with you on one point: at 7:16, you said "Now, there are human rights catastrophes that bear directly on race and gender. Black male incarceration in the United States comes to mind."
Since it's clear that you value rationality, objectivity and evidence, I would point out that the claim that an unjustly disproportionate number of black males are incarcerated in the US is *itself* a conspiracy theory with no factual basis. Anyone who believes in that theory must explain two things:
1. What is the *specific mechanism* that guarantees that all ethnic groups within the US will always commit crimes -- or indeed, do *anything* -- at a rate that correlates precisely with their demographic?
About 62% of all US citizens are Caucasian, 17% are Hispanic/Latino, 13% are black and 5% are Asian. What is the mechanism that ensures that they all do everything (commit crimes, vote Democrat, become dentists, whatever) at those same rates? I have never been able to identify such a mechanism.
2. Why does this mechanism, if it exists, seemingly let Asian-Americans commit crime with impunity?
In other words, if 100 crimes were committed, one *might* expect that 62 of the perpetrators would be white, 17 would be Hispanic/Latino, 13 would be black and 5 would be Asian. But this is far from true. Homicide offenders in the US are 6 times more likely, per capita, to be black than white (and this is from the Justice Department's own statistics, which were compiled and published under the Attorney General Eric Holder, who is black). However, Asian-Americans (NOT including Native-Americans, as they're lumped together in the UCR) make up just 1% of the prison population, rather than the 5% that their demographic would suggest they *should* comprise.
Why this disparity? Is it all part of some white conspiracy to incarcerate Asian-Americans at *lower* rates than their crimes warrant? Or could it be that different ethnic groups in the US tend to engage in different behavior -- such as blacks being 5 times more likely to have children out-of-wedlock than Asian-Americans -- and tend to inculcate different values, such as the strong avoidance of shame that the Asian-American community shares, versus . . . other things that the black community shares? Isn't it possible that the number of the members of *any* ethnic group behind bars in America simply reflects the choices that tend to be made by members of those ethnicities, and those of their parents, peers and others who influence them?
I'd like to hear your views on this.

I agree, Christina. Many, many intersectional feminists are focusing on the wrong things. The amount of outcry when something unimportant happens like Kylie Jenner wearing cornrows always seems to take precedent over what really matters, aka helping women that are actually disadvantaged and struggling to survive, mostly in third world countries.

We could simply say that Intersectional Feminism establishes a hierarchy between individuals based entirely on arbitrary characteristics such as race and gender. And based on that hierarchy, they determine how well you should be treated and what rights you are entitled to.
This is the litteral other side of the coin that bears a black swastika in a withe circle. You just switch the word "Ubermensch" with the word "Oppressed", and the word "Undermensch" with "Privileged". If you are a privileged white male, you should bow to the oppressed black females.
It gets even more amazing when you read Mein Kampft and see how three quarter of that book was about how Germans had been oppressed and should overthrow the designated oppressors and make them pay somehow.

I know this is will probably never reach you or others like you. Those of the first wave. However, on the slightest off chance that it might I wish to say a simple thank you.
For all that you and those women who empowered us and who gave us a chance to be us just simply us. For bringing into the spotlight and making people back then see what women were truly capable of and for spending your energies so that women in this country did not need to live in fear true actual fear.
All this might not be properly put nor punctualized into perfection but I am getting older and at 50 sometimes I find I just dont care haha. So please bear with me and my imperfections a moment longer.
When I was a young teen in the mid 70s I came home from school one day and my parents came to "talk" to me. They handed me a fat stuffed racoon, smiled alot, and filled me with reassuances, while they explained to me how they found a lump in my moms left breast. At that time prognosis on breast cancer was not good as you will probably remember. I remember them explaining the possibilities to me and about the surgery and so on if it was cancer. I remember the look of horror on my fathers face when they were done.
That night and the following days were a nightmare for me. Not simply becuase I might lose my mom, but, if it were cancer her decision to have a mastectomy would destroy my world. My father threatened divorce, my nanny said it was unforgivable, one could not be a woman without her breasts and so so many other cruel and senseless things that would have sentenced my mother to death so she could be buried as a "whole" woman. When she grew up in the 40s and 50s appearances were everything as you know and somehow her breasts were so important that they were worth dying for. Realy?!?!
I remember my mom telling my father if she were nothing more to then a set of breasts then she had no problem with a divorce. She then said something I never forgot even 35 years later (give or take) it is my body and my decision and I wont die so I can be an "intact" woman when they bury me.
I remember being sad ,afraid, and angry becuase as odd and sad as it would have been for my mom to be without a breast how much sadder it would be to be with no mom at all.
Right into the 60s and 70s a woman amounted to little if she could not maintain her marriage ,( even if it were fake)she would not be counted a real woman if her reproduction organs were not as they were supposed to be and many other terrible constrictions. To make this short my mother mercifully did not have to make that decision as the lump was not cancerous and her breasts and marriage remained in tact, though from then on it was dead and they seperated a few years later.
So in short, Thank you for making people understand back then and still today what true feminism actually is. That a breast did not make my lunch and see me off to school nor did a womb feed me soup and medicine when I had scarlet fever.
I must admit I have little respect for the third wave feminists as I see them as petty now a days trying to remain relevant by pushing petty meaningless indignities and sensitivities that are unbecoming of a strong, independant, thinking woman. Maybe its becuase I am spoiled lol. Its not hard to be spoiled when you grew up with wonderful strong independant role models like you ,my mom, and the rest of the first wave to look up to. You all have my undying admiration!
Never fear I raised my own daughter to be just a proud and strong as I am. Throw what you will at us its okay I am a woman I can take it and I can take even more and when its all said and done I will be the stronger for it because I am a woman and I can take it! (rawr!!! lol )

I took a "quiz" about privilege and plugged in all my stats. It only served to remind me that there are many reasons why a person might have a harder time in life, and that I shouldn't judge someone because they have money, or their skin is a certain color, or they get to go to a college. Unfortunately, most of the people taking these courses aren't focusing on others, they are focusing on what that means for them. That's where the disconnect seems to be, and that's what needs to stop.
It's just another adaption of feminism to stay relevant in our society.

Okay, so THIS was the feminism I have so much of an issue with. That makes the world make sense again.
As she said: There is a basic, neutral, sensible point about paying attention to the experiences & needs of different social groups & the fact that unequal levels of access to opportunities can exist along lines of race or gender, but it can all turn crazy very quickly and it certainly doesn't help to demonize people just because they may be recipients of privilige, as if they were those who actively created it.
Seems much more reasonable to a) judge people by their actions (something that they are actually responsible for) rather than by their association with a sociologically defined group and b) to focus on creating equal opportunities wherever they don't exist yet and to encourage people to work for this common goal, instead of alienating all those who might enjoy some priviliges at the moment. After all, priviliges won't be removed by alienating those "in power". It requires cooperation and compassion, neither of which is increased by outrage.

As an academic who seeks to inform personal and professional efforts with intersectionality in mind, I was intrigued with this video. I found your points to be valid but lacking recommendations for solutions. In fact I agreed with most of what you stated and especially appreciated your simple definition of intersectionality as “a reminder to be sensitive to different kinds of social advantage and disadvantages”. Is your issue primarily concerned with the exponential expansion of groups ‘victim creep’, apparent mob mentality of bullying white men the same way marginalized individuals have been, and its perceived bubble that inherently protects it from criticism ‘conspiracy theory’? If so, then I think a clear distinction must be made between the concept and its implications (intersectionality) and the way in which sub-groups have weaponized it. To use your example of the convention in 1992, I would ask ‘how are people with allergies systematically oppressed?’ It seems the greater issue with Feminist Intersectionality should be on the drift (and misunderstanding) from its intended (original) purpose. Even first wave Feminism was not about pitting men against women but about equality of opportunity. Intersectionality is (in my opinion) a more nuanced look at how inequality is greater when one encompasses multiple oppressed identities. I would love to hear your suggestions on how to counteract this bastardization of intersectionality and get back to its roots.

Dr. Sommers, intersectionality tries to place the emphasis on throwing around blame for oppression. But "Identity Politics" is a misnomer. My identity is not _what_ I am as much as it is _who_ I am. My identity consists of my personal choices as an individual -- exactly what Identity Politics seeks to deny and denigrate.

Intersectionality is the acknowledgment that u can have intersections of privilege and oppression. Your intersections don’t negate each other.

Yes, people can be affected by multiple forms of discrimination, but fighting over who's the least privileged is just leading to segregation and flipping the tables doesn't do anything in the way of making things more equal... pah... we humans are a silly bunch...

In my early links with feminism in the 60s, we were looking to break some of the stereotypes, the acceptable ('respectable') ways of living, the limited choices. We had to fight the assumption that we would become 'mother/housewife', being given away by the father into the care of a husband. We fought too for education, career opportunities, equal pay, the right to decide on birth control, pregnancy. I recall when asking for the Pill in the early 70s that my female GP wanted to be sure I was "in love" before prescribing it. So these were some of our issues, and thankfully I can see real changes for my daughter in her choices, education, career, and lifestyle, and my grand-daughter (grandson too it has to be said). So, intersectionality is not what we fought for. It is a hijacked distortion that does not promote choice or peace. Excellent video, well marked up, and great thanks.

and only certain people can obtain said knowledge so how is it that privilege doesn't exist in capitalism if said knowledge isn't accessible by all members of the society? Yes we all hold fruit ofs of knowledge/wisdom, but academic education isn't something everyone can easily obtain (Ex.: parents who work multiple min wage jobs mahy not have the time/energy to apply for scholarships, let alone time to go to/afford going to school in the US specifically)
