I think teaching children by encouraging play is worthwhile. Plato said this and in this he was spot on. Children can learn math and music without being indoctrinated. Teaching religion is child abuse, as is compelling patriotism, etc. As kids get older they can learn world history and the natural sciences. Other subjects are suspect and amenable to bias and indoctrination, which are to be avoided.

The problem I see in the west is the lack of an alternative narrative, because it is banned under the auspices of Russian or Chinese propaganda. Even in America, alternative narratives are being banned (or highlu censored) for the war in Ukraine and Israel, and only the accepted American administration and establishment viewpoint is being presented in establishment mainstream media. One has to go to alternative media to understand the issues at stake. Governments that censor don't trust their citizens to form their own opinions and so are threatened by an informed citizenry to judge the merits of various policies.
