- Another day, another remake of some old classic. And in this case, it's the 1989 action thriller starring Patrick Swayze. And after watching all two hours of it, I just have to ask... why?

McGregor walks about the whole movie as if he had a tree trunk under each arm
It's called the Lebanese walk. I have Lebanese friends who walk like that, it's meant to look physically imposing. It's pretty hilarious. Very fragile egos so you can't make fun of them or they get really offended.

@@truints I watched it with my dad and my brother so we just laughed and talked shit riff tracks style so it ended up being enjoyable even though it wasn't good. Conor was clearly having a ball making this thing so every scene the dude was in was just Conor being a meme from beginning to end.

I love that we're supposed to believe a roughneck bar, where fights break out every day, would have a barista making artisan coffee. If there's one thing I know about organized crime syndicates, evil motorcycle gangs, and bar brawlers, it's that they love their Grande, Iced, Sugar-Free, Vanilla Lattes With Soy Milk.
I was visiting a... less salubrious city and at a bar I noticed a nice gleaming expresso maker. As my fiancé only drank a specific beverage (half-and-half large latte no sugar extra hot) I thought I'd get her one. The old bartender (on reflection, licensee) frowned at my request and motioned me closer across the bar to say, "we only serve two kinds of coffee here - white... or black, what'll it be?" I guess the barista was off-shift that day.
Meanwhile, war hardened operators take their coffee black. Who are the real tough guys, I wonder?
i love how you point out the ridiculousness of artisan coffee being in a bar, but people surviving stab wounds and being launched tens of feet in the air with no damage is completely fine & believable.
Road House isn't a movie that takes itself too seriously, so you shouldn't either.

😂 that’s what my girlfriend was saying throughout this movie. That’s pretty much all the laughs I got from it. That and Dalton basically becoming a sadistic killer while explaining how the guy he punched is gonna croak. Maybe coulda done without that level of serious, kind of to get to style of the original again. Wasn’t against a Road House remake with the right mindset, just didn’t like this one.

I quite liked it, it’s nice to switch my brain off occasionally and just enjoy some over the top ultra violence and and bit of the old in-out.
Same ,drinker cries that Hollywood depicts white male as dummy dumm rescued by strong wamen, but when movie like road house that is satisfying fighting movie arrives he again cries but for other reasons. We don't get movies like this very often ,and I am happy to say at least one new movie I liked

Yeah it was a lot of fun. It didn't need to be smart to be entertaining. Connor was the highlight for me, it was fun seeing him play an over the top version of himself.

The comedy was top notch. Post Malone CGI fight scenes, McGregor walking around like he just did three lines of coke beforehand... Priceless

I actually enjoyed it more than expected. Having absolutely no expectations helps. It had many flaws but remakes are often 100x worse than this.

I stayed a week with my uncle in Oklahoma for a fishing trip and while I was there, he took me to the movie theater to see the original Road House. It was great and so is my Uncle.

The state of the movie industry now is the reason I go to second hand shops and buy dvds. They`re cheap now and I know I`ll have a great movie to watch whenever I want. So far I have 400, and I`m not stopping any time soon.
Same here. I've barely had any streaming services in my life, due to the fact that many movies often have limited time on these services. They come and go. In a more dystopian and totalitarian scenario, these services can potentially do the easiest way of "book burning" ever if the companies, government or society wants certain movies banned
My local library has plenty of good DVDs that don't cost a dime.
I already own a shitload of DVDs and feel lucky that I lived through the mid-'00s to the mid-'10s when it was actually cheaper to buy a DVD than hire one. I also have a lot of classic Hollywood movies as well as ones from the late 1960s to the mid-2010s, and last I checked a lot of them aren't available on streaming services.
Funny thing, the first movie I watched on my new DVD player was Ice Age with my kids.

I owned a bar back from 2006-2012. The cops would host a security class from time to time and they always showed a clip from the original Roadhouse where Swayze explained how to bounce to his staff. He was spot on with his advice.

I wish I watched this review before watching the Road House itself. Man I lost 2 hours I am never getting back. The worst movie of the year.
I spent 6 months as a Marine on a US Navy ship in the early 90s. We had a VHS machine with only 2-3 movies. One of them was Roadhouse. It seems like we watched it daily. “Be nice, until it’s time to not be nice,” should be the new USMC motto.
I am surprised about this extreme lack of choice.
I (German) always thought that the US Navy was way more generous regarding entertainment and stuff like that.
And I do not quite understand it. You are serving on a ship that costs millions, tens of millions or even hundred of millions. Equipping you with 100 VHS would cost maybe 2000 bucks. And increase your quality of life by a lot.
I doubt there is a cheaper way to entertain your soldiers (and by this increasing satisfaction and moral!) than by providing a nice selection of videos...

In the past they have relied on charitable donations from individuals and organizations like the USO or MWR (Morale Welfare and Recreation). If your navy has 20 or 30 ships, you can kit them out for a hundred grand or so. If you're the USN and you have 500 ships, now you're talking a quarter of a billion dollars. You could buy a new golf course for the O-club with that kind of money. Also, you have to remember that you're talking about sailors and marines. If you put in that kind of equipment three quarters of it would be stolen inside six months and the rest but one would be broken. Which may be what the OP meant, there was only one machine and two movies left by the time he got there.

I thought it was a fun movie. Weak, script? Yes. Strange performances? Definitely. Plot points that went nowhere? Sure. But it made me laugh for two hours at the silly randomness of it all, and Dalton was a fun and sympathetic enough character this time around that he got a pass from me.
It's the kind of film to go in with low expectations and just enjoy the ride. And that McGregor performance just can't be missed. Bizarre and hilarious!
I was mostly entertained by this film. Where it fell apart for me was when Dalton (very calmly) says the reason he is afraid, is because when you push him too far, he goes crazy. If there was ever a time to “show, don’t tell”, that was it. We know that Gyllinhal can depict losing control very effectively (See Prisoners). Let him do it.

I genuinely tried liking it, but just the dialog, the acting, the plot, the forced romance bullshit, just fucking punched me in the nuts. Hell I felt like even Jake was bored and didn't give a shit after the first 30 minutes of the movie. And the ending, my god that was hilarious.
As someone who suffers from insomnia, i fell asleep 25 minutes in. 10/10

Ive started watching this movie, stopped in 20 minutes and went to watch the original.
Honestly, I didn't even make it through the new one, because after 30 minutes I was like "this is stupid, I wanna watch the old one" but then I realized that the old was was also pretty stupid. Definitely more charming and stylish, but also extremely stupid.

Original Roadhouse has been a guilty pleasure of mine since it came out. I really like it and can rewatch it over and over. Same thing with Point Break. So why do they keep f'ing up the remakes? Because Hollywood has lost its mojo.
If you're going to remake a movie (like Point Break for example), remake it as a different film altogether. Then no one realizes it is a copy and paste screenplay with a slightly different backdrop. so instead of a remade Point Break, we get Fast & Furious, which is the same movie with cars instead of surfboards. It introduces a new viewership to the concept without stepping all over the original.

Went into this movie with my brain switched off just for the fighting. Didn't really care about the plot, acting, character development or arc. Absolutely enjoyed it.
I dunno, I kinda liked it. I have a soft spot for Liman after Go and Gyllenhaal I will watch in almost anything (yep, even in Michael Bay's Ambulance!). Sure, McGregor was naff, but I enjoyed this more than I guessed I would. Harmless fun at the end of the day.

Maybe because it's a reboot to another film, particularly one thst didn't need to be rebooted.
Reboots will always be compared and judged by the original. This movie looks like something entirely different and should have been it's own movie.

McGregor *maybe* could've worked as an evil chaos gremlin, but having him talk - much less try to act - was a serious unforced error.
He wasn't bad, they should've just told him "stop fookin smiling EVERYTIME" and he would've done great, his kill scene wasn't bad either, should've acted 4 secs longer and it wouldve done well
Pretty sure they wanted him to act the way he did. It works for his character.
McGregor was awesome! He was the only entertaining thing in the movie.

I had a Roadhouse double feature last night, only because I turned on prime for the first time in three months greeted by a remake I was unaware then searched for the original. The remake is exactly that, weird, and the shaving scene at sea sets up an unhinged villain only to not follow through. Hollywood should have just called it Bouncer and left out the “no one wins a fight” scene, which is out of place since Dalton was a professional fighter. I do admit to being entertained as I watched the movie while working out and making dinner. I think Mr. Gyllenhaal is a fine actor, however he just doesn’t have that calm cool that Mr. Swayze oozed. I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. McGregor’s performance and only at the end did I realize who he was due to his size. If nothing else it proves just how good the 80’s version is. I don’t think it tarnishes the legacy of the original because it gives me a chance to tell the younger generation to watch the original.
the “no one wins a fight” scene has a totally different meaning here, coming from him “winning” a fight where he literally murdered a friend of his, which ruined both his career and his mental. shaving scene sets up the villain pretty well, it isn’t showing him as “unhinged” in such a simplistic way as that, it’s showing that he refuses to listen when people try to point out the error in his ways, like not listening to his barber, later not listening to other subordinates warning him, and that he’ll lash out madly when things dont go his way. which he consistently does. the only reason he punches that dude is because he’s surrounded by cronies and knows he can’t do shit back. agree about everything else though, macgregor was a blast. movie was pretty weird overall though. so much singing in the first half.
@@obscure.reference nicely observed. I'd add that the shaving scene also helps define that he's not really a though guy, only acting like one. Any other villain would have thrown the barber to the sea, and later scenes reveal that he's basically just a kid trying to impress daddy.

Exactly. A huge fan favourite cult classic I don’t think CD realises how much its loved by fans . No it’s not high art but damn swayze and all the support enthusiastically own that film 😊. Great fun.

They're not redoing Patrick Swayze. Elwood Dalton is his own character and is James Dalton's son. So it's kind of a remake and a sequel at the same time

The original Road House was once of the iconic movies of the 80's. I watch it every couple of years. Patrick Swayze was a little too trendy back then. But was Sam Elliot ever in anything that was bad? And Kevin Tighe as the bar owner exuded a desire to do right by his community. Jeff Healey and his music was the soundtrack that held it all together.
Watched it straight after this mess. The old movie has funny elements to it, but it was way more believable than this trash.
Dalton never made any sense. A guy that philosophical risking his life every night and constantly getting into unwanted fights, for the higher purpose of...Cleaning up a bar. And the way he treated Denise, a beautiful woman that only wanted to sleep with him, was just pathetic. Calling her a pet. Really. Awesome action sequences, and so many different fighting styles! Aikido, stickfighting, and Morgan even brings pro wrestling into the bar!
Would love Sam Elliot to be my martial arts master.
Well the original road house isn't a good movie, but it is a fun movie, and it has an eighties charm to it. The new road house is better in my opinion, it just doesn't have the same charm.

The guy was actively trying not to say anything bad about the worst movies, glossing over and rounding corners, leaving only gray, formless blob of a "review". @@GuiiBrazil I am not sure. I have no problems with Stuckmanns reviews. At least Chris doesn't have to hide behind the schtick of a cliche drunkard to make his reviews. But I also have watched the videos where Chris talks about his history with his overly religious upbringing and finding solace and escapism in movies, so I thought the drunkards 'burn' was rather a cheap shot.
This movie at least had one positiv effect. It made me wanna watch the original Road House.

The original took place in a middle of nowhere dive bar in small town Missouri. It felt gritty. The new one takes place in a beach front tiki bar in Key West Florida. It felt goofy.
not to mention a bar like that in florida has 20 dollar drinks. People who go there aren't exactly opressed minorities or tough guys who brawl.

I saw the original Road House. About the only thing I remember is the scene where Patrick Swayze buys a beater car with 4 extra tires and wheels (because he knows it’s going to get vandalized with all the tires slashed); and the part where he fires the head bouncer. I don’t recall anything else but I know it was better than the 2024 “remake”

The goofiest part for me is how the band never stopped playing, no matter how many beers were chucked at their heads. The band playing through destruction was meaningful in Titanic, cringe in this.

AGREED!! I was LOLing so hard I nearly fell off my chair. Told my son he had to see it just to experience the craziness of MacGregor chewing up every scene with his wild eyed "I'm an Irish legend!" smile throughout.
That fight and all the lines before it were a total rip off of the Reacher Season 1 scene where he encounters the 4 kids before his motel room!

I think the point of it is this. Youngsters will never see the original, so that don't matter to most of the population don't know it exists. Now this movie, although I re paint of one of my favourites is atleast a movie that puts the balls back on. Being tough and winning fights is cool ! Being cool is cool ! Be the coolest ! If this helps put the balls back on the 18 years old and unders coming up behind us then hell yeah. I'm beginning to realize I'm not the age the movie makers are making for, we already have our stories.

I actually think you’re being a bit too hard on this one. I didn’t really find an overpowering presence of the “the message”. I would say Connor McGregor felt like he was doing a bad impression of himself throughout the movie.
Watching the original Roadhouse, which was a fun but very campy movie during it's time, but somehow against a remake in 2024, it looks like a masterpiece in script writing? What a world.
Yeah! This stupid piece of dumbness made the original B movie look like an A movie and what does that say about modern moviemaking.
Just rewatched with my sons. My eldest thought The Jeff Healy Band playing the house band was awesome in original. They should have had some young blues guitar player like Marcus King or Kingfish Ingram. Wouldn't have made it better, just a bit more tolerable.

the original wasn't great and without the nudity wouldn't even be remembered. this was far more entertaining & had a better lead actor and Conor was more entertaining than anyone in the swayze film.

I watched the first one again first and it was quite silly with very 2D characters but was a fun movie. Honestly, the remake wasn't that different, maybe a bit more silly but wasn't all that bad. Even thought McGregor was kind of funny in it.

The scary thing is that I'm not even suprised anymore and more scary still, even dissapointed. When you're so conditioned to the bottom of the barrel level of quality and not even care is the worst thing.
They are running out of things to remake. So now they are remaking forgotten average movies from the 80s.
Based on the acting chops on display here, I do look forward to Conor's triumphant return in a Leprechaun reboot.

Would've made more sense to show the end of his career where he lost it and why he retired, which lost him his wife and daughter. Then the train scene would make sense. And the girl from the book store needed to mirror his daughter for a genuine reason to care for her. Apart from that is was a good movie to switch off and watch some action!

It felt like they spent so much money on McGregor and therefore designated way too much screen time to him and sacrificed other relationship building and character development. This Dalton was dark and a loner. Which just made me miss the charismatic and charming Swayze. Not sure why they went that route when you’re already climbing the hill of comparison.
Another 80s classic torn to shreds. I watched the opening scene here on YT and it was... uninspiring. Which is a shame, because Jake G is a damn fine actor... in other movies. Thanks again for saving me time, energy and money, CD!

I'm glad I spent less than 8 minutes on this movie than the full runtime.
If you don't like fun dumb action flicks made for the 17 year old boy in you then it's good you missed it, it's not a movie for serious critical types, if you don't want a laugh and some gratuitous violence and by the time Conor gets on screen zero realism then you should NOT watch this movie. This is a movie you need to have a sense of humor for.
The most enjoyable part of the movie was pointing all the stuff I saw when I visited my brother who's stationed in the keys.
The original worked because it fit Patrick Swayze's persona at the time perfectly.
If there's no mullets, it's not the real Road House.
Colin McGregor was the the ony good part of this film for me. His performance is so wild and over the top I expected him to start literally chewing on the scenery at some point.
Watching him was like watching someone play GTA, he steals cars, gets to his destination then crashes and abandons them, he bashes random people, he wears strange outfits, even his fights seem like video game fights. At least he made me laugh!

Come on man the protagonist was fantastic on the film.. he carried the film himself, it k my he went to fantastic shape for it, he actually played the “super duper mysterious stranger” very well.. I enjoyed the film a lot mainly due to the protagonist, mcgregor was stupidly over the top , and turned me off in the beginning, but then I was oh well he is having fun & I am facing fun see him be a lunatic so it’s not that bad.. the only thing turned me off was that there was no last scene were protagonist kick Åðð to mcgregor.. I mean I know is impossible but is s fun film already unreal things happen why not this one too
