      Anna (and the other young lady Taya) brought Ukrainians and Ukraine to our living rooms, it gave a sympathetic face and showed how they live today. I was born behind the Iron Curtain, and to the Polish history teaching of this era, Ukrainians were literally villains. Shift of borders, deportations, led to 10 years of bloody partisan war on both sides of the present border. Polish still consider Lwow "the 2nd or 3rd most important Polish City" after Warsaw and Krakow.

    I loved how Anna cut to the most important aspect of this war in her summation. While geopolitics has its place in study, reality is the most important thing to not lose sight of. The reality is Russia under Putin's leadership is an aggressor terrorist nation that is killing innocent Ukrainians daily. It is unacceptable and must stop. A unity of nations can achieve this. Those of us who are Noam Chomsky fans and read his book "Rogue State" would disagree that Russia is a terrorist state. That moniker belongs to the US that has spent the last 80 years undermining governments around the world, funding terrorist organizations, and coups like the one in Kiev on Maidan in 2914. It was the coup orchestrated by CIA, managed by Joe Biden, and executed by Victoria Nuland that resulted in a civil war between fanatical Ukraine nationalist against the Russian speaking Ukrainians in Donbass resulting in the eventual special military operation to prevent Ukraine from killing more Russians in Donbass. Terrorism is using military hardware against civilians and is the only thing Ukraine is good at -- because they are failing on the battle field in a war they provoked.

The NB8 Security Initiative (Nordic-Baltic 8) was established long before they even dared dream of NATO membership. They just wanted ANY partner that wasn't Russia. All the Baltics ran to anyone close by who would help them get rid of Russian interference, and they didn't even know what that would look like. @@GMT_400 That is because the formal language is accession no acceptance. But it means the same thing in practice: 1) You apply for membership. 2) You're given a list of requirements to fulfill. 3) If everyone likes you, you are accepted, which completes your accession to NATO.
      Besides the founding nations nobody has been outright asked: "Would you like to join?" and nobody has been told "if you don't join there will be consequences". Therefore any rhetoric with "NATO expansion" needs, at the very least, a critical approach.

    Anna is right… why is it on Ukraine to have to explain in detail the horrors and crimes of Putin when they have logged and provided evidence of these numerous war crimes.

    • @georgek1234
      @georgek1234 Před 7 dny

      Why, because Russian narrative was adopted by every NATO state member after the collapse of the USSR. Everyone hoped the Cold War was finally over, Russia was becoming a democracy, and it could become a trusted nation. That liberal democratic thinking lead to TASS press releases being rebroadcast w/o question. To this day, TASS can call bingo! whenever they want. How many times has Ukraine been blamed (eg: Nova Kakhovka dam, downing Russian bomber with POWs onboard, etc.) We must turn the table... NATO member states must be circumspect of everything that comes from the Kremlin AND demand that Russia prove what they claim beyond a responsible doubt before amplifying/repeating the claim. If we all apply pressure for Ukraine 1st news, we might be able to break the stronghold Russia has on our media and thus more people would learn not only of Ukrainian successes in their fight for freedom and democracy, but also of Russian atrocities and incompetence. IMO the UN plays a big role as they allowed the RF to assume the USSR's seats on both the GA and SC... that should NEVER HAVE BEEN ALLOWED.

    Vlad is definitely correct, Sweden is firmly on Ukraine' side. I think Putin would at most get an 1-2% approval rate. Trump, by the way, I think had an approval rate of 5% when he was the president of the US. In Finland Trump was even more unpopular, and I'm convinced that Putin wouldn't get much support there either. Greetings from Sweden, and long live Ukraine! / Björn

      I'm proud to see us remember our brotherhood when it matters. We poke fun at each other because we've fought so many wars, so traditions must be upheld. But deep down the Nordics stick like glue, and I'm very happy to see that our eastward cousins, the Baltics, are as much "in the gang" today as they were back in the mid to late 90s when I was training Estonian soldiers under the NB8 Security Initiative because they wanted nothing more than get as far away from Russia as fast as possible.

    Great, really great. Great group,serious, articulate, communicate real thoughts and insights. Plus I enjoy the mix. And Jake, you are an excellent moderator, intuiting when to ask a question, when to bring in a different contributor, establish, support a rhythm among the four. And never is there a sense of you imposing your thoughts and personality on the others. Some may think, since your word count seems low, that this is a simple thing, a matter primarily of personality type. This is not true; you have a developed skill along with a talent that is only to be admired. Furthermore, you have also in most of your work for clearly communicating complicated concepts using simple language in succinct portions. This too is rare and to be much admired. Especially since this is live. You don’t have the opportunity to edit out your own crap when reading over your words.
    I share this opinion supported with the fake authority of thirty years as a writer and editor of service articles for mass circulation US magazines, plus a bit of newspaper experience. At 76 I am “retired”, though in truth unemployed as I stand among the ruins of a crashed industry.
    Back to your talent for communicating complex subjects to lay audiences, I think, among the Ukraine commentators, you clearly shared this talent with Konstantine S. I suspect, Jake, in addition to your experience preparing a lot of videos on a variety of complex issues that all those years of language teaching in S. Korea greatly developed these skills. A career of addressing overcoming language barriers to communication. (If there are mistakes here, please blame them on an arthritic index finger and aging eyes and laziness about rereading; nothing to do with the functional quality of a brain. And if anyone is looking for a writer editor ….).
