As Richard said , ‘the money is in the basement”. He knew where Karen’s sweet spot was , musically . I also noticed on her solo album, that the music was too loud, and her voice was not loud enough. There was one song that I litteraly could not hear her words several times throughout the song. And that deeper contralto voice really was the gold standard!

I certainly enjoyed Karen Carpenter's music for more than one reason. First, her voice was beyond outstanding. Secondly, her overall talent was immense. But the special additional reason had to do with my older brother. He and I were the two sons of a husband and wife who were very musical in their own ways, so we grew up with music in our household from as young as we can remember. Both my brother and I started college as music majors, two years apart. Later, I continued on with essentially a dual major, with music as one of them. However, my brother left college in northern California after his first year there, and moved to Southern California to continue his musical education. It was there that he met two other fellow classmates, and began making music with them under the group name of "Spectrum". A short time later my brother called me and said that the group had changed their name to the "Carpenters". My first thought was why that name? Why not "the plumbers", or "the electricians", or whatever. I had no idea when he called that the name was a surname of the two. For the next 10 or 11 years my brother Dan played bass and sang with them. During those years he also co-wrote a song with Gary Sims called "Rode Ode" that Karen recorded. I attended a number of their concerts, and met Karen and Richard a number of times. I got a brief opportunity to see them in a non-stage setting, and the two of them were really first class people. I've never seen Richard since then, but ironically he lives about 20 miles from me, and had a major involvement in the "Performing Arts Center" in Thousand Oaks, California. So, I would have to say that my perspective on these two people is quite different than many others, for these reasons. Someday it would be fun to bump into Richard, and chat a few moments about the past. Thanks for reading this. Wayne Woodhams, Ventura, California

Thanks for posting and sharing parts of your experiences and the reasons behind them. Much appreciated. I was close to Karen for a bit kind of through accident as I hadn't realized that her dad (Harold) had relatives where I lived. I got to spend quite a bit of time with Karen in private and I was kind of around her when all the solo album stuff started. Like you, I have a much different perspective than others. I only saw Richard 4 times in about four and a half years and I haven't seen him since the day Karen passed away. I met many different people around Karen and nearly all (except 4 times with Richard and twice seeing Jerry Weintraub and I talked twice on the phone with Rod Temperton and met Rod once in person) were one time meetings. More than happy to read what you posted here and glad you came forward. Thanks again.

      @marionscheuerlein4387 Před 2 lety +7

      Teresa... I don't think so.
I studied the lives of Richard and Karen very close. I saw or heard many many interviews of Karen, Richard, friends, band members...
It's very easy to pick someone and blame them for everything. I ask you to stay fair, please!
I ask you to think about the following:
      The parents
Richard once said in an interview that they simply didn't grow up kissing and hugging all the time.
I believe him. Think about the time and the values the parents grew up with. Was such behavior common there? Probably not.
I know something similar from my grandparents (born in 1905 and 1907) and my parents (born in 1934 and 1936). I can hardly remember that they kissed or hugged each other in front of us children. It was not common! There are many people from that time who are bad at showing emotions or even admitting mistakes.
Keep in mind that every person is the product of upbringing by parents, family, teachers, which is influenced by many additional factors: place of residence, income, time one is born....
So Richard and Karen's parents also grew up with certain values and were influenced by many factors.
Sure, you can change things. But to some extent you can't get out of your skin.
      Psychology
People are impressionable and always feel subjectively. That means: a human tends to prefer people and not others. It evaluates others. Unfortunately, it has also been proven that mothers unconsciously have favorite children whom they prefer. Be it because they stand out through an ability or remind them of someone or something...etc.
And for Agnes, Richard was the apple of her eye, whom she supported in everything. It's not fair, but people are like that. My mother had favorite children too. (I definitely wasn't.) And honestly... Richard can't help that! In other interviews, friends say the mother supported both of them.
The mother was probably the dominant one in the family, the one who held the reins. That can be both guiding and giving security, but can also be inhibiting and scary.
But if you see how Richard and Karen behaved / behave (open, friendly, down-to-earth, nice, lovable, polite, charming), then she also did a lot of things right.
      The Anorexia
There are certainly several factors that favor the development.
But one must also consider here: at that time, when Karen suffered from it, anorexia was hardly known! If you have such a person in front of you, it has a different perception than a "normal" person. And logical arguments do not count. Even "Eat something at last, Karen" doesn't help. It is an addiction.... and it is difficult to overcome.
I don't want to know how many people have said something to her, standing helplessly by and no longer knowing how to talk or what to do. Richard was certainly one of them. But he also had massive problems with sleeping pills. Anorexia was hardly known. Many people were helpless. And there is also the point of no return. Karen had gained weight, but the years of health abuse, starvation, laxatives, then gaining weight too fast... her weakened body couldn't take it anymore. Sad, because it didn't have to be this way if Karen had gotten the right help sooner (and ACCEPTED it!).
It's terrible to feel your own powerlessness and watch helplessly as nothing really helps. Then to rejoice when things seem to be getting better.... but then the body just can't take it anymore. By the way, that's often the case, too.
Richard lost his only sister. It's hard, because when you watch them, you realize that they love each other. You can see that in looks, in gestures... you can't play that!
His musical partner is no longer there.
Richard and Karen spent a lot of time together, both loved music, Karen idealized her brother, '"he always knew what he wanted". She emulated him. Not on the piano, but on the drums! Richard encouraged Karen to sing.
He lost his most important friend.
Karen and Richard were very close. They had the same main interest and certainly other similarities. When you're that close, something breaks away when one leaves. Richard looked really lost at parts of the funeral report. And also in the documentaries you can see how warmly he speaks about Karen and you can see that he misses her and mourns her.... In his eyes.
Karen loved her brother. And she wanted to do just the same as him. It's normal.
If Richard hadn't chosen the music path...who knows what Karen would have done? No one.
And both had incredible gifts that were a perfect fit for each other.
I just ask that we don't judge people too quickly. 1. It doesn't bring Karen back and 2. You can also draw the wrong conclusions.

    • @MsNooneinparticular
      @MsNooneinparticular Před 2 lety +6

It just never should've been competitive between them and that's what it came down to. She idolized him & he shat on her solo dreams & was jealous of the attention she got for being the "lead sister," after pushing her to get out from behind the drums and sing! She couldn't win. But it was her mom who was the biggest problem overall. Even so, I'm sure she still loved them both so that's not to badmouth them. It had to feel like she was unworthy of love and was just a cash cow after her relationships (marriage, etc) ended so badly.

@@marionscheuerlein4387 My heart goes to Karen. I don't know her family personally and I can only speculate. This what I have learned, figured ourt may help a person in similar situation.
I wonder if their mother was narcissistic. Once she was asked to tell Karen: 'I love you' and she couldn't do it. She favored son. Narcissistic parent selects a 'golden child' and a 'scape goat'. And does more than 'unconsciously have favorite children'. She (or he) will triangulate, set up children against each other to be jealous and emotionally depend only on her. She will actively destroy natural bond between siblings. May abuse her own children emotionally, psychologically, physically or let be abused.
And children all their life may believe they loved their parents, were loved but still feel that something is off. Because intuition is the first signal that we may deal with narcissistic manipulation, abuse. It's very difficult to recognize a narcissist, especially a 'covert narcissist'.
What kind of woman advises to enter unhappy marriage with lying man because 'media and family are coming', without considering happiness of her own daughter. Narcissistic may easily, because they are all about appearances. And then she sends her on guilt trip to stick to facade of happy marriage. So her mother won't feel uncomfortable, ashamed. Classic.
I believe Karen could be a victim of narcissistic abuse. This could be her main issue and her anorexia was only an escape from codependency.
Is Richard a narcissist? He may be a victim as well. And he may believe I'm wrong unless he study what narcissism is about.
I have 50+ years of experience with narcissists but only since 5 years I'm aware of it and study this issue. Most likely you have no idea what I'm talking about. Most people doesn't know anything. Most popular definition of narcissism is a person taking much care of their appearances. Someone just with narcissistic traits can be called a narcissist as well, and someone with a full spectrum of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. We have an epidemy of such behaviors. It's advisable to check 'narcissistic red flags', narcissistic tactics.
Who defends narcissists most? finds various explanations of their odd behaviors? People who have accepted a lot of abuse themselves.
See 'The Killing of a Sacred Deer'. Anyone who knows what narcissism is all about will see it's a story of a narcissistic family. Colin Farell plays the role of a narcissistic father. He doesn't know his own children so much that he would ask their school head master to tell him which of them is 'better', worth more, of course to him.

At 17, Karen was offered a recording contract by Joe Osborne. When she was 19, the Carpenters were offered a contract by Herb Alpert because of Karen's voice. For all intents and purposes, Karen's voice is the reason there is even a Carpenters sound.

  • @tomjones2348

I don't profess to be an expert on the Carpenters. I was about 12 when they hit the airwaves.....and it was stunning. Very different than what was considered "In" at the time. I didn't let my friends know at the time, but I just loved that music....all the while I was learned to play rock guitar. Now....at minute 6:40 there is discussion about Karen's voice taking center stage and Richard being overshadowed. The way I've heard it.....from several first hand perspectives, including from Richard himself, that Richard encouraged her to sing AND pinpointed her vocal range, making sure that each song was in the perfect key for her to shine best. Richard said in several interviews that Karen's dream was to have her own family....kids, husband, house with a white picked fence. .....and that being the center of attention in a musical setting was not her nature. Richard cultivated that in her.

    • @adriandowningiii8395

      Thanks for sharing that Tom.
As far as "Now....at minute 6:40 there is discussion about Karen's voice taking center stage and Richard being overshadowed. Richard cultivated that in her."
I heard from Karen, herself, about her trials and tribulations of moving up front from being behind the drums and for comparison to what you posted (compared to what was mentioned in this interview)...
From Karen to me in 1978 (within a couple days after Cubby O'Brien had visited so around October 1978). Karen talked about moving out from behind the drums starting in 1971 and this was what she told me about it.
Originally there was talk from the audiences during concerts and the talk was "Where is that voice coming from?" and "Who is that singing?". So they brought in Jim Squeglia (j not g sound? and Karen had a difficult time pronouncing his last name) to fill in for the slow numbers (ballads) and Karen would go behind the drums for the fast numbers.
This lasted from 1971 until 1973 when Cubby O'Brien, one of the original Mousketeers, was brought in. After Cubby was brought in in 1973, Karen was brought out front and a drum duo (solo) with Cubby and Karen was added to the show.
Karen had told me that she did love it behind the drums, but after thinking about it, Karen knew she needed to move out front as Karen had thought that if she had been out in the audience, she would have wanted to see who was singing as well. Karen agreed with the audience on that one.
But Karen didn't actually feel forced up front and she understood why it needed to be done so she agreed to try and move up front.
But when she was first moved up front, Karen was so used to playing the drums that it was awkward for her not having her drum sticks in both hands and instead holding a microphone in one hand. It took a bit of adjusting but she had a lot of support from Richard and the band during the transition. Karen wasn't really sure if she could handle not playing drums and singing at the same time as she had always been used to being behind the kit while singing and being out front without a drum set was just awkward for her at first as she wasn't used to just singing.
From what I remember, Karen did not mention to me about her mom saying anything against Karen being moved up front (later in another talk Karen did mention about her mom being upset that Hal Blaine was brought in during recording sessions originally until after Karen had told her mom all the records Hal had played on and that they had got Hal to come in inexpensively). Karen had her drums and a drum company had also been sending Karen more drums too (as Richard used to tell the story about having to move furniture out of the house so that Karen could have more room in the house as her drum set got bigger and bigger). But Karen didn't mention to me if her mom objected or not to Karen being moved up front as a singer. Karen mentioned Jim Squeglia (which she had a hard time with his last name pronounced skwejlia) and Cubby but nothing about anything from her mom. This is another of those "I wish Karen was around to ask about this" but I am thinking after her mom didn't realize who Hal Blaine was that mom may have held her breath on this one and just let Karen and Richard do what they felt they needed to do. But without Karen's input, this is only speculation on my part so don't quote me on this. It is way out of character for either Karen or her mom to hold their breath and not say their opinion on something but strange things can and do happen sometimes.
And remember too that back then there weren't the big Jumbotron TVs and such like there are now. It was the stage, the equipment, the band and the audience back then.
But Karen also hadn't been hiding back there behind the drum kit, Karen really loved playing the drums but unfortunately back then you couldn't see a drummer (even with the clear crystal set) behind the drums and cymbals on stage.
But then too, Karen always considered herself a baseball player that played drums and sang for a living.

Richard in the early years was the more animated of the two. Look at his appearances on Carol Burnett and Bob Hope tv shows/specials. Look at Richard in the early career live performances, appearing very animated as he headed the group. Look at Richard on the early tv interviews being very outspoken. Look at Richard in the early career years at award ceremonies when he and Karen went up to accept their awards. Karen was very shy then. Once Karen came to the forefront of the group to sing in the Mid and later years, then Richard withdrew and became the shy one.

i think it`s a little unfair to say Karen was `tied to Richards hip`, because she was`nt, they were very close and worked well together. Richard has said many times, especially in the later years, that they were both born to compliment each other, her singing and his own skills as an arranger etc.
i actually think Karen would have had a successful career anyway had she chose to, how could she not, with a voice like that, would it have been on a level with the Carpenters success, i guess we`ll never know, i`m just glad we got what we did from them both, but saddened it did`nt last longer than it did :)

Where I don't belong, I'm not that strong
It's nice to know that there's someone I can turn to
Who will always care, you're always there
When there's no getting over that rainbow
When my smallest of dreams won't come true
I can take all the madness the world has to give
But I won't last a day without you
So many times when the city seems to be
Without a friendly face, a lonely place
It's nice to know that you'll be there if I need you
And you'll always smile, it's all worthwhile
When there's no getting over that rainbow
When my smallest of dreams won't come true
I can take all the madness the world has to give
But I won't last a day without you
Touch me and I end up singing
Troubles seem to up and disappear
You touch me with the love you're bringing
    I can't really lose when you're near
    When you're near, my love
If all my friends have forgotten half their promises
They're not unkind, just hard to find
One look at you and I know that I could learn to live
Without the rest, I've found the best
When there's no getting over that rainbow
When my smallest of dreams won't come true
I can take all the madness the world has to give
But I won't last a day without you
When there's no getting over that rainbow
When my smallest of dreams won't come true
I can take all the madness the world has to give
But I won't last a day without you
Won't last a day without you, without you

So many uber-talented people's live are cut short by their own demons -- including Karen Carpenter. I know it's a cliche, but they do seem to burn so brightly in the short time they are with us -- and then they are gone.

I feel so sorry because she was abused by the very people that she loved and respected. Unfortunately that set her up for being taken advantage of in the worst of ways. Her mom was never going to love her the way her mom loved Richard and that's clear. That's what she always trying to win over and it was not going to happen. Whether they knew it or not both Richard and her mom then used that power to make her do whatever they wanted to and mom even made her go through with that horrible wedding even though she knew that it wasn't right. Sick

“You make your bed you lie in it” he said her mom said this, I’m 62, this saying is horrible, sadly I remember it commonly heard in the 70’s. Instead shouldn’t we all have grace extended when we make mistakes or simply want to change the game plan according to our deep desires? Her solo album was denounced by them as it wasn’t in line with her past voice and their need to keep her in a box of their own making, my take. It is very good btw, I have it downloaded from iTunes. It’s a heartbreaking ending, tho she left us with her beautiful singing made polished in Richard’s mind and heart.

How do you know the details of Karen being spoon fed etc.? I can’t imagine her doctor broke confidentiality.

Karen wasn't actually spoon fed by Melba Franklin (Frenda's mom). After Melba noticed Karen wasn't eating, Melba kind of did a "hear comes the train (choo choo)" type stuff with Karen as a kind of joke to get Karen to eat something that one time. This was around the late 1970s (1978, 1979?). Karen talked to me a little bit about Melba and Frenda I believe in March 1979. It was a kind of inside joke between Karen, Melba and Frenda.
As far as breaking confidentiality, Steven Levenkron was not licensed to treat patients so all this talk about Levenkron supposedly working directly with Karen as her 'therapist' is just talk and not reality. Levenkron ran the clinic named after himself but he was never licensed to treat any patients directly including Karen. A lot of misleading and false information out there about all that went on from January to September 1982.
Even more misleading is that Itchie Ramone was pregnant with her and Phil's first son BJ from 1982 until BJ was born in New York City on either February 7 or 8, 1983 which was understandably why neither Itchie nor Phil were at Karen's Funeral. Itchie had complications (I believe according to Karen it was a tubular pregnancy) and with those complications Phil absolutely forbid Itchie from flying so Itchie Karen and Frenda had not been together since at least around September 1982 until Karen passed away on February 4, 1983.
And also, Tom Burris signed the divorce papers and also a suppression (gag) order before Karen passed away. As Karen hadn't signed the divorce papers, that luckily couldn't be enforced, however, the suppression (gag) order could and was enforced. There wasn't any secret back door deals or bribe or any of that stuff as that suppression order was meant to keep Thomas and Karen's names out of the tabloids and was from Karen and her divorce lawyer and not from Richard and had nothing to do with Karen's Will.
Keep digging Accomandoc. I appreciate your thoughts.

I heard her solo album, it wasn't a good production. Yes her voice was good, but the material she had was not. A good test for good music is will you be humming it or singing it 10 min. later, a day later or 50 years later. The material she was working with had not one song worth humming 10 min. later. Just proves it take more than a good voice to be successful. It takes good material like lyrics, melody, arraingements etc. like building a house. This guy Ramone just took her money and sold her a pipe dream. Richard realized this. Whatever Richard was doing worked.

It worked for about five years. Once the hits stopped coming they needed to do two things: settle down and start raising their families, and change their music to stay current. Even Olivia Newton-John told them that.

17:00 Whats so ludicrous about not releasing the album? Name me one song on the album you remember since you say you heard it. You can't even hum the melody of one. Why? Because its not memorable, thats why. Karen was on top so why release a flop?

"My Body Keeps Changing My Mind", which is in the vein as "I'm Growing Older But Not Up" from Jimmy Buffett.

I liked her version of "Still Crazy After All These Years" and maybe 2 or 3 more on it but it did seem like they recorded in the wrong key on some of the songs. I don't think it would've been a complete flop just not a smash. She didn't need to be embarassed about it.

Still doesn't give you the right to exploit Karen's memory for the purpose of achieving ill gotten gains. You have no right, Mr. Schmidt, to invade Karen's privacy while ransacking the Newville house. You are all the same. Very sad!😎

Hi Richard. I appreciate your point. Still, I think that it's important that her fans (and I am one of them) understand what her life was like. Everyone deserves a chance to fail; Karen included. If her album did not work out, she would have learned a valuable lesson or two. She should have been allowed to cancel her marriage. The only control that she seemed to have was over her food intake. A heartbreaking story indeed. Knowing what she endured makes me appreciate her even more.
