Could I have used the wrong endpoint? The share point site has an option that says “for users with access, copy this path” to the document.

From SharePoint you probably have to authenticate on the API Call, and I believe probably there is a specific endpoint to download files from SharePoint using the API, I recommend to checkout the SharePoint API documentation.
