  • Using a palette knife will change the way you paint. As simple as that. It won't allow you to get down into detail. Allow yourself to be expressive, rather than overly descriptive. I promise you, you'll have a great time once you get into it. You WILL use a lot more paint! Do let me know how you get on in the comments...

Your video, “ fifty strokes to create a painting “ , inspired me to visit the fun side of discipline. My eyes become more quickly discerning and my goals more realistic. I paint along the shore of the Monterey Peninsula where the movement of the waves and light constantly dance before my canvas. Thank you for helping to educate my focus. Beverley

Your landscape sounds beautiful and glorious, Beverley. We've entered our long, long winter over here, so I won't be outdoors painting very much. Enjoy your painting. Kevin

You have inspired me to try this. I've taken up oils recently (I'm a watercolor artist) and it's a bit frustrating, yet so fun. I love using palette knife. I will paint along with your video. thank you for your fine teaching!

Hi Anne - That's the problem with painting from photographs, they can keep you from moving away from them. My advice is to deliberately and methodically change colours. I was very conservative with this video but other times, I depart radically. It's much more enjoyable that way - and you learn more. Good luck with your paintings.

Hi why do you paint an orange beige sky?

It's another way to depart from the photo Anne. I always try to change something.
