Since the firmware 3.0 upgrade, low light focus for my Z7 has gotten better.
THIS. This is why I love your videos. To the point, sample footage, and not 50 minutes long. You get to the point about the item you’re discussing. Thank you!
Thank you very much for this excellent comparison. It really helps me to make my decision. I am looking forward for more.
Very thoughtful reviews as always.
I have a 50 1.8 S , what a Fantastic optical instrument. Can’t wait to have a 20 1.8 S & Telephoto Zoom
Thanks for your review of the lens. I own three Z mount lenses, the 35 f/1.8 S along with the 24-70 f/4 S and 85 f/1.8 S. Really like them all, but the 35 f/1.8 S is my mainstay on the camera and the best 35 full frame lens I have used from Nikon or other brands. While the 50 S is supposed to be great, I prefer the 35mm focal length to compliment an 85. Considering the 20 next.
Which one do you prefer for street photography ? 35 or 50 ?
I am assuming you use the 85 for portraits.
I have both the new 50 & 85mm f1.8S lenses for my z6 I am blown away by the sharpness these lenses have. I have no doubt that the 35mm f1.8S is just as good. Nikon did an amazing job with these lenses. But I already had the Sigma 35mm f1.4 f mount lens and it works flawlessly adapted to my z6 I see no reason to get the new 35mm. Yeah it might not be AS fast as the native glass but I won’t part with my Sigma 35mm. Great video as always
Hi!! i know this is out of topic, I have a Z6 but how do i focus recompose with back button AF-C? or am i better off with AF-S? Thank you!!
Which Lens do you recommend for a Nikon z5 : nikkor z 35 mm or Sigma Art 35mm?
I have a DX 35mm 1.8.. do I buy this for my z50 (yeah, I am cheap) or just an FTZ.. is there any loss (in quality, sharpness or speed) due to the introduction of an extra adapter (extra interface means extra loss?) with the FTZ?
Will this work fine on Z50 given that neither the body nor the lens has VR/image stabilization?
Hi! Thanks for your review! How do you find the Sony zooms (like 24-105) comparing to Nikon Z (27-70 f4 or f2.8) in terms of sharpness, rendition?
I have this lens as well. Love it!
If I own the 50 mm Z mount lens, in your opinion for video is it better to buy the 35 or the 24 f/1.8 Z prime as a second video lens?
For my landscape photography I use my zooms(14-30, 24-70 f/4), but as you said, very seldom I would need a 1.8 for some creative work with an object as subject and some 1.8 bokeh..,
Good review! I have the z50 and I’m looking into this lens. I have a DJI ronin rsc2 which I will use to stabilize since there’s no stabilization in either. In your opinion do you think this is a prudent choice?
Great info and thanks for sharing!!!
Awesome review! Which one is better for the nikon z50? nikkor z 35mm or 50mm for headshots and fullbody?
Hello, I love your videos.
I agree that the 24-70 f4 is a great sharp lens but coming from fuji apsc I have found the combo 24-70 f4 + z6 a bit heavy on the hand for long walks (though I still didn't received my hand strap), this 35mm looks pretty good and it's very versatile for me to use it alone. I see there are 130grm less than the 24-70 f4, do you feel the difference when holding this combo 35 f1.8 + z6?
I have Z50 and planning to buy this lense. Please let me know if it gives a good back ground blur effect which I would like to use for weddings and all
I am having a setup with a Z6 + 24-70 F4 + 85mm 1.8G.....I am content. The zoom at f$ is wonderful for all purpose, because the ISO works brilliantly on the Z6.
And for all kinds of portraits, Bokehs, I use the 85mm. I did not go for the 85mm S because of the prize.
The FTZ and zoom came as part of the kit.
Happy with it.
Very informative review.
You guys have been super busy pumping out content. Thanks and I think your videos are getting better. That said I’ve seen great things about this lens . You just did a video on the Sigma 40mm Art and said you were thinking of getting it . Well I bought the 40mil art especially for the Z body I do not have yet . Crazy maybe? I was considering the Z6 and this 35mm f/1.8 or the 40 mil art . I got the 40 art on a one day 1k special and grabbed it . I don’t regret it at all . It’s instant gratification because I can shoot it on all my Nikon DSLRs right now and when I get a Z body it’ll work in perfect for what I do. Are you guys getting the Sigma 40mm Art? And when is this 40 art video coming you’d talked about ? Thanks
I have a Z50 with the 16-50 mm (no FTZ right now) and I'm looking for a fast prime setup for low-light. I'm curious about one thing: is the Z 35 mm worth it for this camera? Or is it better to just go FTZ + 35 mm DX (F mount)? I would be curious to hear any opinion from people who tried these setups, both regarding performance and handling/portability. Thanks for any advice!
Thanks! This is what exactly I wanted~
Will not the Z camera with built in VR work with this lens?
Hello,
I confused about 2 lens.... Sigma 35mm 1.4 art DG HSM & tamron SP 35 1.4 Di
Please suggest me which one should I buy !!
My priority
better sharpness, better bokeh, better color reproduction...
I'm Nikon D750 user.
Please help me🙏🙏🙏
Show more sample photos. I really like the shoots that you took. Also, compare the primes to the zooms using different stops.
In your lens ring/function button customization section, the in camera capture showed 2 fn button settings. Does that mean you’ve got your hands on the 70-200already? :P review on that coming any time soon?
I love your reviews.
A fixed lens I always associate with less variability. The zoom allows me more freedom but if you can assure me that the 35mm f1.8 is very much.better option than the kit lens I will buy it. Thank you
Krynauw
Nice review! Are you planning in making a similar one with the 50 1.8? I´ve heard that it´s really quite impressive in its sharpness. Hugh Brownstone mentioned in one of his videos about the Z ecosystem, that it was worth investing in just for that lens, and that´s quite a statement coming from him. Great work, take care and stay safe!
Hey - thanks for the video - I've just got this lens used but in great condition and it's awesome. One question though - I'm finding it a bit noisy in AF-C mode - is this your experience too or do I have a bad copy?
I have it too, its a bit more noisy than the 24-70 f4 so I think its normal.
Hi. I’m going to Italy this year, and am contemplating purchasing either the Z 35 or 50mm for use indoors. The lens will also be used for street photography here in the states.
On Z6/7 or Z50? If Z50, then definitely the 35. If Z6/Z7, it's a toss-up depending on the focal length you prefer. The 50mm is a slightly better lens, IMO, and I prefer the 50mm focal length. If I could have only one, that'd be the one for me. If you see yourself doing a lot of closer up portraits, the 50 would be better (though not traditionally used in this way, it works well, still). If you like to get more of the environment in your pictures, especially in cramped indoor spaces, go for the 35. Again, on the Z50, 35mm without a doubt if your only getting one lens for indoor photography.
BTW, I have both lenses for the Z6, and both are fantastic.
Hillehome Videos, thanks!
Z7, BTW.
@@judilecompte9377 Awesome! Enjoy!
Can we get the Nikkor 24mm review.
I own the lens, I just find I don't use it much because I don't take the 24-70 2.8 off. I also have the 24-70 f4 and don't use that much either. Do you see much of a image quality difference between the 35mm 1.8 and the 24-70 2.8S ?
Other than the obvious f1.8 fast aperture, I guess the picture quality should be great on both 👍🏼
I have both lenses. From me both lens are great. But when using 35mm 1.8 some effect cannot be produced by zomm lenses
If used on Nikon Z50, would 24-200mm have wide enough field of view?
Wide enough for what?
I am a Nikon Z6 user. I have 24-70 f4 S lens and I use my 50mm/85mm F mount primes with Adapter. I am happy with performance of the lenses even with the ftz adapter. I am looking for a 35mm prime now. Should I go for 35mm 1.8 S lens or I should look for Sigma 35mm 1.4 art lens?( Which can be used with adapter)
Scrolling through comments and was wondering the same thing. Have you had a chance to try either of those 35mm lenses yet? Thanks
A comparison between Sigma f1.4 and Z35mm over Z mount is very much required .
Sigma 35 1.4 is a bit on the heavy side, especially with ftz adapter between.
I have a Z6 + FTZ + 35 1.8G ED, if I put 35 1.8Z, will I get something more in terms of resolution and sharpness?
Your F mount 35mm f/1.8G lens is a DX lens, meaning that you are only using the APS-C (DX) portion of the Z6 sensor. The Z mount 35mm f/1.8 S lens is a full frame lens so you will be utilizing the full Z6 sensor.

Do you want a 35mm lens to die for, try the Tamron 35mm f1.4 for Canon or Nikon-fmount. It is arguably (outside of the Zmount, which I have never tried)the best 35mm lens on the market.
Without FTZ adapter this is probably the best (and the only) prime lens for Z50, 35mm is a sweet spot you probably dont want anything much higher because you getting 1.5 crop anyway.
Planning to pair it with My z50.
you should try out the Tamron SP 35 mm f1.4 for nikon FX, because that is really the best 35mm i have seen on Full frame .
yeah, but the cost is that the Tammy 35mm 1.4 is weightier and bigger than this z35mm. The performance of the Tammy 35mm is pretty great, though.
I bought a Z6 and the 35mm Z lens at the end of 2018. I bought this for a project. I found the images nicely saturated and reasonably sharp and detailed. However I did not like the lens when I compared it to other 35mm lenses I own and use. Sold. Shortly afterwards I sold the Z6. To complete my project I bought a D7500, the 35mm DX lens and the 40mm DX Micro lens. This setup turned out to be much better for my needs.
Now however I am interested in the upcoming 24-200 Z zoom. Maybe once a representative body of reviews has hit the airwaves I'll give the Z6 a second look.
I do like and find useful your observations on the Z zooms lenses: that these lenses are very capable and diminish the need for prime lenses in order to get nice images.
Thanks for your work.
All I want is a Z7 & this 35mm prime
Waiting for 24 200 f4 6.3. if test are great I'll sell my 24 70f4 for it. Would you?
think I skip it for the 1,2 primes.
The 50mm 1.8 is a razor though.
Please do a Z series Snapbridge tutorial.
You gotta get the 50/1.8 S. The sharpest Z prime of them all. Six hundred bucks.
Cool T-shirt 😎
Can we say this lens enough for everything on my Z6??
Especially portrait & landscape &studio & wedding for both purpose; stills &videography..? Or which lens you prefer for my goal..? By away I don't use adapter
No. In that case I'd go with a 24-70 2.8 if you want to use it for weddings.
These Nikon F1.8 Z lenses are longer than the DSLR counterparts, it’s like there is a permanent adapter attached to each Z lens. For example, the 50 F1.8 G + FTZ is about the same length as the 50 F1.8 Z. Say we have 4 prime lenses, 20, 35, 50, 85. The G lenses actually occupy less space in the bag. And the F1.8 G lenses are much cheaper too. Yes the Z lenses are sharper, but the G lenses are sharp enough for even the Z7 sensor. If we can live with the bit of noise when the aperture is engaged during start up, the G lenses are worth considering too.
My favourite baby :) (the lens of course)
Why is it so long a barrel..?!? Traditionally 35mms are relatively compact. Not so this one! Or the Z 50mm. Looks more like a short telephoto in size.
You do not know the Nikon 35mm f1.4 lens it is G lens.
Why TF are lenses so big? Defeats the purpose of mirrorless size argument
I like to ask something.. but I saw only 1 answer from you.. so I have no question anymore.
We?
😻
Nope not f1.8 on the z50
As a current Nikon owner (for last decade), I feel many in the marketplace are concerned about Nikon’s fumbling of interpreting market demands. If Nikon is going to push forward with apparent market desires for a technology (mirrorless) yet not incorporate class leading accepted norms (ibis and auto focus), how can/would a consumer invest in its offerings? I’m very impressed with the data sheets of Nikons latest lenses and promising future of the large mount, yet extremely disappointed (along with many other pros) in Nikons latest bodies. I simply cannot reinvest in new offerings without class leading design of the fore mentioned items and unfortunately, Nikon’s sales data as the worst of all mfgs reflect this antipathy. I’m waiting for a true pro Z8 with top performance of these items or I’ll be forced to “move on”. Nikon-take note.
AliceEphemeral
To clarify- class leading ibis for video as Olympus has done.
I like the lens a lot, but 'pleasant' bokeh? Come on. If there's anything this lens doesn't do well, it's bokeh. Lines are way too pronounced in the background.
Those better not be plastic mounts on the 40 and 28. I'm so sick of Nikon giving is over priced garbage. I was looking forward to jump back into Nikon but the 28mm isn't even an f2. Guess I'm sticking with sony.
thanks guys
