I was in the middle of no where and had a flat ...swapped out the tube and a fellow rider sent me a link to this awsome hack!!!!Thanks man you saved me from walking 30 miles in the desert .👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤
Hey Jax cheer up you are helping so many folk like me stuck with flat tyres and the wrong type of pump ! Super fix !!! Maybe get your wife an electric bike so she can come with, get some fresh air, smoke less... her mood will lift and who knows it could make for a beautiful upgrade all round !
Absolutely brilliant! Thanks for sharing this, I’m definitely keeping this in the back of my mind for when I roll up to the gas station next time with a flat!
Been in the bike industry since 67, and have never seen this hack. There were a few times I could have used it, Great Work! PS, I love a comment you got saying hey just buy some adaptors? They don't seem to understand that this is a hack if you are out somewhere and there are no bike shops or stores that sell adaptors, this hack can save you... But oh well, they think a little differently if you know what I mean... Ha ha ha ha
The little adapters get lost so easily. And they aren't available at big chain stores, only local bike shops. I learned it working and bicycle shops, tricks of the trade!
Glad it helped you! Tell friends, in most cases the length needs to be near 1/2", don't cut it too short. Jax Hacks will strive to remain helpful, original, no guy rambling for 10 minutes, no mumbo jumbo! 🍻
The other day I was walking into a coffeeshop. A roadie meet up. Spandex and bikes all over the place. I noticed a guy had a presta cap with hole in it just like this. Now I know why. I'm taking in on board for myself. Excellent hack. Thank you for posting.
Thank you man. I just got a lift to go get a new tube for my bike, which is an odd size and didn't even know these things existed. I got home to put in the tube and thought "what kind of messed up manufacturing error is this" only to find that I am once again stuck in the middle of nowhere unable to get my bike back on the road. Ilk be implementing this hack today, and hopefully report back the success of this hack. Life saver dude! I'm 4 miles from town, and 20 from anywhere that sells a tube, much less any idea if an adapter is available.
Update. It works... kinda at least. I don't own a Guage I can check pressure on this thing with, and that's saying something. Ive got probably 10k in my tools here, been a mechanic all of my adult life, and have never even heard of a presta valve until today
Yup man, this the real hack, the other videos titled "how to inflate a presta valve at a service station" Then BOOM! Have a presta valve adapter!!! Like how tf am i suppossed to get a presta valve adapter in the middle of nowhere? Thanks. This is the real deal!!!
Thanks for sharing!! Got a new bike that have these valves. I haven't ridden since i was a teenager and gave never seen these valves before. Long story short your tip helped me get this new bike in the road. Thanks again.
Great video. Just did the same thing and it worked perfectly. Swapping out the inner tube for my neighbor and couldn’t figure out how to air it up. Thanks.
you bloody ripper. i bought this tube at some yuppie shop for twice the price as normal. i got home and saw the freaking valve. noooooo- i thought. after a grumble i hit the googles and stumbled on your DIY. shazam! my tire is on the bike and i'm happy as lary. thanks heaps champ.
F.ing presta valve . Why ? Same thing . I bought a tube .went home , unfolded the tube and said wth is this !? Now I can't even check the pressure. Ok . Just cut the tip off the cap and can check the pressure .now I have a hole in the cap . Well it will have to do until I can get a NORMAL tube .
cool hack for emergencies, I'd never consider screwing it on backwards 👍🏻re: tire pressures, should never exceed rim specification. if a tire indicates 120psi but the rim is only good for 100 psi you inflate to rim pressure.
Thank you for the vid and the explanation..! a hack for a hack: When you mentioned your wife smoking in the bathroom and then saw you cutting the cap, I remember that asa kid we would use cigarette filters from the floor in the gas station to use the pump!
I've been riding Presta valves for over 30 years. I've never needed that "hack". Simply carry a frame pump or CO2. They do make Presta valve heads if you want to use your compressor.
Whether 3 days or 30 years experience this is a hack which means it's a trick that can be used in an emergency with no money, no adapters, on the spot get you home safe
@@jaxhacks3223 I said the same thing about the adapter. I guess to some of us, the fix is too easy to plan ahead for and not necessary. But, I get your point.
Most tires are presta. They are found on the better quality bikes. You can also either be smart and carry an adapter on a valve as a cap... always smart. Or use a hack like this. Certified bike mechanic
CONFOUNDED THE HELL OUT OF ME UNTIL I FIGURED OUT THAT I HAD CONVERTED AND THAT OPEN ENDED BRASS CAP WAS MY CONNECTION TO THE PUMP VALVE (STILL HAD TO REMOVE CAP TO SCREW OUT THE PRESTA TOP -- WHICH I WAS ABLE TO BEND ONCE)!! CONVERT TO SHRADER!)
Great hack! Thanks! But a word of advice; the cap is meant to be an additional seal on the valve, in case the valve fails catastrophically. If it does, a screwed-down cap will change a sudden blowout into a slow leak that will still give you a chance to pull up safely. Not that I've ever had a valve suddenly fail, but ... Carry your 'presta adapter' cap with you, by all means, but have a regulation cap screwed down when you ride. :)
Excellent tip. I had an adapter that I was keeping with my tools, but it lost its rubber o-ring and its useless now. I should have keep it screwed on the tyre...
I tried this using a normal stem cap. I just drilled a hole large enough to go over the stem and using the cap to push the air compressor them it was able to add air. Not a lot but enough to ride with. I think it only worked because I had an air compressor.
In my experience the better quality tubes have a longer threaded section, meaning it can be done without reducing the cap length. The cheaper tubes have a shorter stem and the schrader pump won't open the presta valve unless you trim about 3mm or 1/8".
It never seems to seal properly with the schrader pump when you put it back on upside-right. Did you flip the cap over and screw it on upside-down? Cap backwards usually provides a better surface seal and can then handle any psi.
Thanks Wes! Glad it helped 💯 Subscribe & Like and check out my other videos? It's all free, I get a nickel from the ad, and you'll impress the ladies this Armageddon. 👍
The term "hack" is grossly over used these days. But this is a proper hack and an absolute life saver!!! Thank you sir, happy cycling!! 🚲
