AMIGA-wow, I come from East Germany and in the former GDR the record company for entertainment music was also called "AMIGA". So I had to smile a little. An album like that would never have been available there or back then. But in fact the GDR label was abused for Elvis bootlegs in the 70s. I even have an LP of it - samples for the 1968 TV special. A cool album. I wanted to mention that when I saw the "AMIGA" label here. Cool video. Kind regards from Germny.

Thank you for comparing the two publications. Good Work from you both. I would also like to hope that with the March 1972 session the rehearsal and mock session will be published in full, with more dialogue from FTD.
But FTD shouldn't wait that long, many hardcore fans are already quite old.

As I've mentioned elsewhere here, I am still waiting for The Definitive "On Tour" release. As yet, there hasn't been one. What I'm asking for is footage of the backstage interviews, a decent soundstage, where sound and vision come together nicely and the Best Vison of the concerts made into a Definitive DVD-Blu ray. It doesn't have to be 20 discs: five should cover most of the important content, and sell it to the world. Hopefully with Baz doing a reboot of "On Tour" this may yet happen, he tends to think like an Elvis Fan. Also, the flimsy packaging that these release are housed in is pathetic, considering the inflated price that's asked. Again a very good feed guys, I like how you two drill down into the very essence of the package, and tease-out information we should seek in the listen.

Great video! Makes me wish I had invested in the Amiga version when it first came out. Also--don't know if you noticed, but in the original liner notes to the Sony Legacy edition, on the last page where they list the musicians, they OMITTED Ronnie Tutt's name ENTIRELY!! A lot of people on CZcams commented negatively about this, so maybe it was fixed in later editions--otherwise, it's an unforgivable oversight to leave out Elvis's longtime drummer.

I've been watching your videos now for a while but I rarely ever post here, but it's come to my mind that you guys really
are in line with my way of thinking. You are spot on on so many things. The inconsistancy of the thinking of the FTD team, (or legacy) is quite evident. I passed on this box set because for the very reasons you state in your video, and I hadn't even seen your video yet. Your thinking and mine are aligned in this issue. This whole "listening pleasure" thing has long been used up. That road has ended. Just put out un-edited sessions so we can collect. They had the chance to make it right, and they choked. We still have a slight chance though. Since this, like Aloha, was a video project, perhaps one day in the future, we get some Blu ray box set of all 4 shows, (sound corrected), and the rehearsals, and mock session. and the same for That's the way it is. Because, I am a visual person anyway, I'd rather watch "aloha" show, or the "Richmond" show than just listen to it. My hope is we get huge deluxe bluray sets of these projects. That's our only hope for completeness to happen.

As for I Got A Woman from the Hampton Roads show, there were two exact recordings, one for RCA and one for MGM (this was also the same for the soundtracks of the movies sessions). For the production of the movie, RCA did the mixing on the sound. However, I got a Woman was not recorded correctly on the RCA copy of the tape, but it was ok the MGM. So MGM wanted to use I got a woman so they needee to mix the track from their copy. When creating the legacy box set, RCA only had access to their copy of the tapes. The MGM sound identic tapes should be in their vaults. Baz Laurman that said that he had access to the footage also said recently that there was sound too. So there is were it should be the I Got a Woman correct version.

The interview Elvis gave Adidge and Abel apparently lasts some 2 hours.

I really enjoyed the Sony release! Granted, it was my first and so far only experience with EOT products (aside from the actual movie, of course), so I have nothing really to compare it to.
As for the editing, I totally get where you're coming from. When I first got it, though, I thought they left too much chatter in! Lol from my perhaps ignorant perspective at the time, I thought that if I'm driving down the road, and Elvis' studio rehearsal of Johnny B. Goode came on, I'd get really into it, only for the take to stop, and I'd be waiting around for a minute or so until they reassembled themselves and performed the complete song. I thought that it killed the flow for a moment. Haha
That said, I've since grown to appreciate the chatter, as it provides a nice feel of how all of these wonderful performances were put together, as well as the tone and mood of Elvis and the band during these sessions. Although I'm not a "complete sessions" kind of person at the moment (I'd classify myself currently as a "session highlights" kind of guy), it would be nice if they put out the all of these outtakes and such in their entirety for people like you guys who love that kind of stuff.
Anyway, I always enjoy your shows, and this one was no exception! Thanks for all you do! :)

    • @EAPSociety
      @EAPSociety  Před 3 měsíci +1

Thanks for sharing your perspective, I appreciate that! And I do agree that, on a public release, a "highlights" concept is a good idea - leaving complete rehearsals/etc is more for collector labels (I wish they'd actually do that, but that's a whole other thing.. lol) For me, the Sony set was too much for the public, but not enough for audio collectors, so it doesn't quite cater to either set properly, lol
But I'm glad you've grown to appreciate the chatter! I totally understand being more for highlights, and how some people grow into sessions over time, and some don't. I do plan to dive more into the "why" of a complete session, as I think some fans may gain insight from why we're so passionate about it.
And so glad you're enjoying the show! You're very welcome, and again - thank you for sharing!

I have in front of me "The Elvis On Tour Recordings" 2020 on; (Elvis One: The Bootleg Series), "Elvis On Tour The Alternative Movie Version", "Elvis On Tour: The Complete Outtakes" (Publisher: Studio B) And the Official WB Release. I also have B/W back stage footage of Elvis talking openly and freely to Pierre Adidge & Robert Abel, quite fascinating if you've seen that footage you will know what I mean. I wish that backstage footage had an official release. Possibly it will, now that Baz Lurhmann is apparently doing a remake of "On Tour" using many hour of newly found footage not used in the 1972 release. So glad to see this episode! Great examination. When this came out, I was very forgiving of its shortcomings, as I was so happy it finally existed. Heck, still am. But you guys have really hit the nail on the head on many things here. My thoughts-
-The mix on the 4 concerts could absolutely be better. Are there terrible? No. But they do sound "labored over" in a way. Matt Ross Sprang does not approach the live mixing like I would - I think you need Scheff and Tutt very prominent and punchy to get a big sound. The drums are anemic here. They're not even mixed with any panning or anything, like the San Antonio 2003 mix. So they sound very small, and their level is better on some shows than others. Greensboro is the worst. The bass, well, just doesn't have that much low end. While I appreciate the guitar and piano being spread so wide in the stereo spectrum (I like wide mixes), I agree that they can be overpowering. I will give them bonus points for just leaving the Hampton "I Got a Woman" first verse alone. Trying to fix that could have sounded much worse. As for the 2003 Close Up mix - the drums sound right there (like the movie) but there's a whole lotta hiss. It doesn't bother me, but surely the masters don't have that much hiss. Sounds more like a copy would.
But I do not like the sound of the Amiga set. I heard the files of it (I don't buy bootlegs, never will) and thought they sounded really harshly EQed. Bad.
-the Rehearsals. Well, honestly I'm not too much of a completionist here - I like the mixes overall better than on the old On Tour Rehearsals disc, but there is one BIG embarrassment to my ears. What the hell is with all that echo on "Young and Beautiful"?? That's the worst mix that Ross Spang has ever done. Completely ruined it.
Overall, I appreciate this release, no doubt. I have listened to the concerts a lot, mix problems and all. It could have been worse, it could be better.

Can't stand the San Antonio mix on the Close Up set. Dry, muddy and flat. Sounds like an old boot 3rd generation copy. 🙄

@@decarlolovejoy4807 Yeah, it's a bit underwhelming but better than Spang's woeful mixes on the Sony set. Though clearly sourced from the Close Up box, the Amiga bootleg definitely improves Ferrante's San Antonio mix.

Hey Guys, wow I never cease to be amazed by the incredibly intimate knowledge you gentlemen possess about the sound of Elvis recordings, especially those that are more 'obscure' to the general public.
It is why my own recent video comparison on my channel of the 2 Elvis CD boxes was limited to the description of the contents and barely touched the subject of sound. As I said there, I'll respectfully leave & defer that to the Elvis experts (including yourselves) in CZcams land. I'd welcome your feedback about my video
    😊. czcams.com/video/88mDA6bxBsg/video.htmlsi=JURvy0AFWftLKKo6
The packaging comparison between these 2 "Elvis On Tour" boxed sets is like chalk and cheese. The quality of the hardcover book in the Amiga set is breathtaking. I liken it to the HC books supplied in my recent Beatles boxed sets as well as the David Bowie "Brilliant Adventure" LP box. The closest, I guess, would be the book in the Elvis "Complete Masters" box. Yeah these sets tend to be expensive on release. But once you open them, your jaw invariably drops in marvel at the sheer high quality. The Legacy Edition booklet here (which I also own) pales by comparison.
I agree with your suggestion of giving the buyers a choice though...you can have it with or without the HC book or buy the book seperately later. I think the question is who are these boxed sets catering to? The term 'listening pleasure' I get. Do the average fans want multiple versions of the same thing? We Beatles fans feel the same frustration as you guys. Some of us complain about certain 'missed opportunities' with these releases. I suppose it's a little hard to tell what these reissue/remixed/remastered boxed sets are supposed to achieve because invariably someone WILL complain regardless of the artist. It would be helpful if record companies consulted with the fans about these reissues. After all we seem to know more about the subject than the people compiling these releases. Love your work as always guys. 😅

Hi, Peter! Thank you so much! I'm sorry I'm just seeing this now! After the May Festival weekend, we'll try to take a look!
And yeah, it's always harder for companies to cater to casual fans *and* collectors at the same time - though with Elvis, they have a collectors' label, so it's a shame to see the same types of editing done for both. It feels... lazy, I guess? And needless to edit collectors' releases, imo. That's another reason why we want to get the Society built up to a large level; if we can do that and make it very successful, we'd have the resources to officially license our own releases, and wouldn't have to rely hoping someone else does it justice. :)

Hi, Luke! The FTD releases aren't mainstream Sony, so they don't have the same distribution network that those have, being a smaller label that just does direct-to-fan type things (or at least fan-sourced channels + a few extras.)

As soon as I heard the track previews, I knew it wasn't for me [can't say I was too enthused with the cheap-looking packaging, either].
As well as the overall dull sound, too many of the musical elements are either missing or to the rear, while others are far too prominent.
That Ernst Jorgensen thought the mixes were incredible is very worrying.
