This show hit me very very hard. I can relate sadly all too well with Mizu. Episode 4 tore my heart out, whereas episode 5 just tore it to shreds. That moment Mizu walks away in episode 5, that determination despite everything. I broke completely. The Sutra scene in episode 7 was also very well done, when swordfather came into frame...
I do find that the ending wasn't as cathartic as it really should've been. Luckily they have already announced a season 2 has been greenlit, so I'm incredibly anxious to see how this resolves.

    • @melkor1021
      @melkor1021 Před 7 měsíci +4

I agree with you on the ending being not cathartic enough: they had all the ingredients in place for a full story arc: Mizu could have had her sword reforged thank to the additional steel from her companions blended into it, she could have learned the lesson of giving some space in her life to others, and she should have shred Abijah into tiny bits... But they sold this away for the guarantee to be able to tell a next season... Which I can abide in all sincerety. Though I'm a bit concerned about Mizu leaving for London, I could have watched Edo period Japan in this style of animation indefinitely. All that said, I love the show, I am very glad it got made, and happy about it having a next season.

I kept trying to focus on what you were saying, but my thought process would be disrupted by the constant cycle of stupid memes and gag videos. At one point I actually scrolled down into the comments where the video itself wouldn't be in view so I could try and listen more closely. When you used stills and short clips from the series it invited me to recall my own experience with the show and where I may have seen evidence of your ideas--until it switched to a series of emojis and a guy doing a weird dance and I just mentally switched to "wtf?" I have to know how other people feel about this...
I had a wonderful time with this show, but there was one thing I absolutely hated, and it had to do with the show's best episode, episode 5, and why I think it was actually its weakest. I found Mizu's husband (I can't be bothered to remember his name) to be a very frustrating character. Don't misunderstand, him abandoning her was absolutely necessary for this story and a wonderful idea. Yet its execution...left me wanting so much more. We had a whole episode showing that this man was different than most, truly different, not just a slightly nicer piece of garbage. So why did he turn on her so quickly? Over mere seconds, he no longer resembles the character we were shown for an entire episode. Again, this turn needed to happen, I know, but I think it happened way too quickly. The issue could have been covered up with a brief, well edited montage of their relationship declining over time. Instead, he turns on her in an instant and reports her the very next morning. I see just about everyone calling this episode a masterpiece, and I would agree if not for this one amateurish mistake that soured the entire episode for me. I just found myself thinking "what? Wait, no really, what?" I was always expecting the decline of their relationship, I was always expecting the turn, Blue Eye Samurai is categorically grimdark, after all, it was just so rushed that I was left feeling baffled at how awful that particular character's assassination was in an otherwise phenomenal show.

I still didn't like how quickly he turned on her, I think that could have been handled a lot better than it was. Nothing against the show or its writers, of course, but that one decision hurt my opinion of that episode quite a bit.

Mikio very clearly had a saviour complex around Mizu. The moment it becomes clear that she is a stronger warrior than him (defeating him with his own weapon no less) that fantasy he's created breaks, rather than embracing the reality he lashes out.
I do think he genuinely loved her, he's just wallowed in so many of the toxic ideals of the period (and a few more personal ones) that it ruins him.
We don't get confirmation that he sold her out, I don't think we ever will. It matters very little either way as by that point both Mikio and Mama had ruined any positive idea Mizu might have had of both living a 'normal life' and living as a woman (Episode 5 is the only time we see Mizu doing such).

I really did miss the point that was trying to be made, so thanks for pointing it out because I doubt I would've gotten there on my own.
As for who sold Mizu out, I actually thought about something Fowler said, he mentions that Mama wasn't, well, her mother, and while that could be a lie, combined with episode 5 I kind of believe it and that would also make it more likely that she sold Mizu out, not Mikio.

She becones a master of the naginata after a single sparring match with her husband. She's inhumanly strong, inhumanly agike, inhumanly regenerative.
Thats straight up comic book hero stuff. Like, i have blue eyes, and they dont give me that kind of power. Shes also not unique in having a life that demands revenge. As to purity of purpose, she's not even after the person/people who made her life so miserable. Shes also inconsistent, killing the kid of the 1000 claws but leaving the guy in the last castle alive(who helped her get her naginata sword back).

      “I dont get it.”
Some do. Some don’t. It’s okay.
“Mizu becomes a great, the greatest?, swordsman”
At what point did the show claim that Mizu is the greatest swordsman? I guess I missed that part?
“by watching people and going through the motions.”
You apparently don’t understand martial arts training.
“She becones a master of the naginata after a single sparring match with her husband.”
Again, what makes you believe she is a “master” of this weapon? And we are never shown what other training, practice and conditioning she engages in. How do you know that she had only a single sparring match and no other training?
“She's inhumanly strong, inhumanly agike, inhumanly regenerative.”
How do you know this? Are you a scientist that studies these attributes?
“Shes also not unique in having a life that demands revenge.”
      No life demands revenge.
“As to purity of purpose, she's not even after the person/people who made her life so miserable.”
Yes, she is. What are you smoking?
“Shes also inconsistent, killing the kid of the 1000 claws but leaving the guy in the last castle alive(who helped her get her naginata sword back).”
Every single real human being is inconsistent, including you. Why should fictional human beings be any different?

@@jachyra9 fair enough, i suppose the show doesn't directly say she is the greatest. It does show that she faces many trained and experienced warriors from the dojo to the palace, and never meets a match, but I guess that is just an implied, not explicit. smh
I do understand martial arts training, but I also understand practical application.
It is true that we only see her in a single sparring match, but ... that is all we are shown. How much are we supposed to just guess she must have done over years and decades of her young life?
No, I'm not a scientist. I have, however, watched peak athletes perform in professional sports, the Olympic games, world championships, etc. and she performs better than all of them.
(i'll put the next two together to answer)
I understand her motivation. She got blue eyes from her father, and as the fellow Japanese people (those actually making her miserable) attack her for that trait she deflects blame from them to those who could possibly have given her the genetic trait that her enemies despise in her.
The last part was speaking to the "purity of purpose". If she was pure in her pursuit of purpose, she wouldn't be inconsistent in such a manner.
Inconsistency is human, no problem there. It could even be character growth.
But if it is purity of purpose allowing her to perform as she does, then it should have abandoned her.

Even people who are your match can be defeated. From a basic storytelling perspective, if the protagonist just mows down all challengers with no resistance, that would be boring. See also: Jedi in the Star Wars prequel films vs. battle droids. They cut them down effortlessly by the dozen. Yawn. At least Mizu is facing enemies who make her pay dearly for her victories. Art is an imitation of life. We tend to grow when dealing with challenge.
“I do understand martial arts training, but I also understand practical application.”
      As opposed to impractical application?
“It is true that we only see her in a single sparring match, but ... that is all we are shown. How much are we supposed to just guess she must have done over years and decades of her young life?”
I know nothing about you. But even if I were to spend the same amount of time with you as we do with Mizu… I still wouldn’t know much about you. Were aren’t supposed to guess at anything. This is a fictional story. If the storytellers thought that something was important enough to tell/show you, they would.
“No, I'm not a scientist. I have, however, watched peak athletes perform in professional sports, the Olympic games, world championships, etc. and she performs better than all of them.”
It’s kind of like she’s a fictional character in a fantasy story and not a real person in real life. Crazy.
“she deflects blame from them to those who could possibly have given her the genetic trait that her enemies despise in her.”
That’s not quite right. She’s not blaming her fellow Japanese because they didn’t cause the predicament she's in.
“If she was pure in her pursuit of purpose, she wouldn't be inconsistent in such a manner.”
Why not? Maybe you’re the only person on the planet who set out to achieve a goal with purity of heart and mind… and never once got sidetracked and changed course in some way for some reason. The rest of us aren't so awesome.
“But if it is purity of purpose allowing her to perform as she does, then it should have abandoned her.”
That’s not quite right, either. Think about those Olympic and professional athletes you cited: do you honestly believe that they lost their capacity to perform when they had off days? You admitted yourself: Inconsistency is human. It could even be character growth.

Although I see no harm in it overall, but when I tried going on discussions and all people casually she/her ing Mizu just because they know the character is afab, rubbed me real bad way. Especially taking in account Mizu didn't use any of the pronouns to themselves so far as the show goes.
    Appreciate your approach! Good vid.
