In 1961/62 Chevy made a drastic styling change to their full-size Impala car line. It marked the end of the wild fins era. The ’62 Hardtop featured the new “convertible roof” design. In addition, while racing by the factories was politically incorrect, the ’62 Impala offered the powerful 409 cubic inch V-8 engine and used by drag racers. Starting in 1958, this full-size Impala continues to be one of Chevy’s top selling line of cars. The ’62 model was part of the third generation of the Impalas. It featured more conservative styling than previous Impalas. There were 5 different engines to choose from starting with the 230 c.i. 6 cylinder up to the powerful 409 c.i. V-8.
1st time released as 3 'N 1 - build as Stock, Drag, Lowered.
    3 complete sets of tires.
Optional interior parts with choice of bench or bucket seats.
Choice of drag racing parts, wheels, suspensions and 3 sets of tires.
Molded in white, clear and transparent red with chrome plated parts and
    soft black tires.
    182 Parts
The Chevrolet Impala (/ɪmˈpælə, -ˈpɑːlə/) is a car built by Chevrolet for model years 1958 to 1985, 1994 to 1996, and 2000 until 2020. It was full-size except in the years 2000 to 2013, when it was mid-size. The Impala was Chevrolet's popular flagship passenger car and was among the better selling American-made automobiles in the United States.[4][5]
For its debut in 1958, the Impala was distinguished from other models by its symmetrical triple taillights. The Chevrolet Caprice was introduced as a top-line Impala Sport Sedan for model year 1965, later becoming a separate series positioned above the Impala in 1966, which, in turn, remained above the Chevrolet Bel Air and the Chevrolet Biscayne. The Impala continued as Chevrolet's most popular full-size model through the mid-1980s. Between 1994 and 1996, the Impala was revised as a 5.7-liter V8-powered version of the Chevrolet Caprice Classic sedan.
In 2000, the Impala was re-introduced again as a mainstream front-wheel drive car.[6] As of February 2014, the 2014 Impala ranked No. 1 among Affordable Large Cars in U.S. News & World Report's rankings.[7] When the tenth generation of the Impala was introduced for the 2014 model year, the ninth generation was rebadged as the Impala Limited and sold only to fleet customers through 2016. During that time both versions were sold in the United States and Canada. The tenth-generation Impala was also sold in the Middle East, and South Korea.
The 1962 model featured new "C" pillar styling for all models except the 4-door hardtop. Sport Coupe models now featured the "convertible roof" styling, shared with other GM "B" full-size hardtop coupes, although the less expensive Bel Air hardtop was still available with the 1961-style roofline. This style proved popular. The "overhang" roof style of the sedans was replaced with a wider "C" pillar with wraparound rear window. Engine choices for 1962 included the 348-cubic-inch (5.7 L) V8 discontinued and replaced by the 380 bhp (283 kW) 409-cubic-inch (6.7 L) or 409 bhp (305 kW) 409-cubic-inch (6.7 L) engine.[citation needed] These engines could only be ordered with a manual shift transmission. The small-block 283 was offered with a two barrel carburetor. The 283 was also enlarged to 327-cubic-inch (5.4 L), offered in two versions, one with 250 bhp (186 kW) and one with 300 bhp (224 kW), which added more engine choices for small-block fans. The Beach Boys produced a hit single, "409", referring to the Chevrolet, which became an iconic song for these cars. Impalas again featured premium interior appointments, plusher seats could be done by the dealerships on customer request. And more chrome trim outside, including a full-width aluminum-and-chrome panel to house the triple-unit taillight assembly. Super Sport (SS) models featured that panel in a special engine-turned aluminum, which was also used to fill the side moldings, making the SS more distinctive in appearance. The Impala also gained the top trim station wagon body design, in place of the Chevrolet Nomad model. However, unlike the passenger cars, Impala wagons had dual-unit taillights. Due to reliability problems, the optional Turboglide automatic transmission was discontinued, leaving Powerglide the only automatic transmission available until 1965. A new radio was optional.
A 409 cu in (6.7 L) version was Chevrolet's top regular production engine from 1961 to 1965, with a choice of single or 2X4-barrel Rochester carburetors. On December 17, 1960, the 409 engine was announced along with the Impala SS (Super Sport) model. This dual-quad version was immortalized in the Beach Boys song.

Really nice job on this one. . .I'm an "older" guy so this brings back memories. When I was 12 my Dad bought a brand new 62 Chevy Impala SS and the color was the same as your model! Chevy called it "Autumn Gold" that year. Also, the white stripe is exactly what was on our car. I also like the blue centers on the hubcaps, just like our car had. Only difference was that Dad had thin white-walls on the tires. Really takes me back in time. . .Great build!

This is THE car that inspired Brian Wilson to write The Beach Boys classic hit “409”. A lot of people think it was the more well known 1963 Impala SS but it was the ‘62.
Chris I know you don’t use copywrited music for obvious reasons but for this build it would have been so cool to use the song, even just the first few seconds.....
    “She’s real fine my 409

My best friend in high school had a 62 409 4speed that he bought for 800.00. First time we ever rebuilt an engine was that 409. (on a dirt floor garage) We cruised the "strip" in Huntington WVa for hours on end in the 409.One red light at a time :) (listening to beach boys 8 tracks) Lost touch with him years later.....hope he held on to it. " Shes so fine my 409"

It’s never going to happen but getting a model would be a close 2nd on my bucket list. Any chance you could build one for whatever cost for me. I just don’t have the talent to do it like you do. I had a real 62 Impala like that one. Mine had the bumper with the guard on it in front of the grille you didn't use. Mine also had electric windows, 409 Turbofire engine, air conditioner, rear defroster, dual antennas on the trunk and best of all, it was right hand drive. The only option it didn't have was seatbelts. it was blood red with white burlap seat inserts. All that beauty bought for 20 dollars in 1993. I wish I still had it. What a car. Beautiful model you built.

Looks to be "Aniversary Gold" - the 1st '62 Chevy we saw on our local dealer's showroom floor in Sept '61 - a 327/300 SS 4-spd. was this color. My Dad ended up buying a Silver Blue/Ermine White Impala coupe, 327/250 3-spd. A couple years later I bought a black 409/409, a $$$ pit! Years before all this I had a ton of out-of-the-box AMT, SMP(?) & also others that were kits (Revelle) stock, custom, drag, etc.) + ships, planes, etc. Very 1st model was a '56 Belair when I was 10. Fun times! You did a fantastic job! Brings back memories.

Hpiguys. Thanks for this. I am 64 and built tons of models as a kid and even 30 years ago. Now retired, I started again. Just a note about this which I am building now. It is fabulous. As I test fit parts, they clamp solid even without glue. I love detail, but a 10 piece suspension system is beyond my coordination. This has detail without fuss. And the chrome trim decals are just wonderful. Now, when I try to outline chrome with paint or sharpie, it ruins the whole car. Modelers, this is a perfect kit. Good for us fumblers and good for those who can!

Is it me or is the fan missing a blade ? Great color choices
I like when you weather them up because that's a true representation of what old cars looked like
Most cars were 6 cylinder or small v8 powered

Beautiful build, the gold looks very nice on it. Oh yeah baby, priming the entire sheets is very smart, back in the 90's i never did that and it was a pain to paint everything by hand after. Painting on summer time was particularly bad on large pieces as the enamel would start to set and would end up with loads of drag marks.
    Stay safe, cheers.

As a model maker I don't follow eney of the rules I use the tree to paint on before painting the model to test what the paint will do. Extra parts can be made if I don't like the parts in the kits.

So, the question that must be asked: What do you do with all these models? They must take up a lot of space, so if you keep them, what about a tour in your collection?

The side trim where you used the white and silver decal, is the trim molded into the body so you could paint the white, or whatever color, and chrome the border? Or is the decal the only option?
