    Build your own “Pick Stick.” It’s fast, easy, cheap, and an incredibly handy tool to have on hand when you need to pick up any trash that has blown into your yard. It’s absolutely essential if you’re an older person with stiff and sore joints, or someone with injuries such that it’s too painful to bend all the way over to pick something up off the ground. The name, Mr. Bawbag? That’s the screen name one of my subscribers (and regular viewer) goes by. After my 500-subscriber random drawing giveaway video, Mr. Bawbag was not one of the winners, and he commented he would just be happy if I mentioned him in one of my videos. So……Here’s to you, Mr. Bawbag!
    I made this pick-stick from left-over and scrap materials I already had in the shop. I didn’t spend a dime.
    I’ve provided a simple drawing for free you can use as a guide if you wish to have one.

    Good ideas here. I would ask why have a copper cap on the end? Is it for protecting the end assembly and prevent it from splitting? Thanks for the video, great idea.

    Great Idea - Thanks for your video. I had an old wooden paint stick the thread end broke off and I was able to drill a hole and screw in for installing a long bolt with square head and grind to a point with my bench grinder. I have a rubber hose to cover the point with not in use. Works great to pick up liter. Take care!

      @@DowneastThunderCreations Thanks! I like yours - very classic and heavy duty for many years of use. You can not buy one that nice in the stores! Take care!

    Cool project and helpful. You might note that tilting the table saw blade toward the guide is very dangerous. I realize you were taking a light cut, so low risk, but people watching should know that it is bad practice since the wood between the blade and the guide can lift up, get pinched and kick back.

    The copper cap is a good touch. You should add a slot or change out spot in case the tip needs to be swapped. Maybe add a barb notch on the tip too so it holds more items?

    would this be safe to use on the street for communal litter picking as i don’t want to get in trouble by the police as it maybe seen as a weapon in some country’s maybe

      Thanks for commenting, Amber Child's. That's a good question, and certainly one I can't answer for you. It's not a problem where I live, but you might want to ask the local authorities where you reside. They would be the most qualified to answer your question.

    How would you make a point without your specialized grinding tool?

    • @DowneastThunderCreations
      @DowneastThunderCreations  Před 5 lety +3

      I don't have any specialized tool, really. I just used a grinding disk on a 4-1/2" Chinese made grinder, but hand file will do the same job. It just takes longer. I used a hand file to make refinements after using the grinder.

      Instead of the lag bolt, you could use a “dowel screw” which is pointy on both ends. You could probably skip the lag screw altogether and just punch a nail through the copper cap with a wad of glue so it doesn’t rattle, and put a couple pins through the side of the cap since it is actually responsible for holding on the spike in this case.

    Where would one find that copper cap? And what’s the name again? I’m not having luck on Google so must be searching wrong term. Thx

      Look in the copper pipe fitting bins in the plumbing section of any big-box home center or hardware store. It's just a common copper pipe fitting end cap and they come in a variety of sizes.

    hi, would you be able to post a list of all things you used in the description?

    • @DowneastThunderCreations
      @DowneastThunderCreations  Před 3 lety +1

      Sure. For now, I'll post it here: Scrap piece of 2 x 4 KD spruce, spare copper end cap (plumbing supplies) I think it was around 1-1/4" diameter), spare 5/16" diameter lag bolt that was around 4 inches long. Some left over 2-part epoxy, scrap piece of line for a lanyard. Honestly, you can use just about anything. I didn't plan on the sizes/dimensions. I simply used what had kicking around the shop so I didn't have to go out and buy anything or spend any money.
