- The String Revolution and Tommy Emmanuel whip up a unique, energetic version of Johnny Cash's iconic song, "Folsom Prison Blues," which won the 66th Grammy Award® for "Best Arrangement Instrumental or A Capella."
The song was produced by Johnny and June's son, producer John Carter Cash and recorded at Johnny's private studio, Cash Cabin in Hendersonville, TN in 2023. The String Revolution was able to use Cash's 1930's Martin H Acoustic Guitar as well as Cash's band member, Luther Perkin's guitar - a 1954 Fender Esquire, which was used on the original Cash "Folsom" recording. The song was mixed by Matthew Hyde and Mastered by Emerson Mancini.

Amazing renditions. Remarkable syncopation and coordination of the guitars. My only whine is that the video cutting every second and a half didn't let me appreciate what the musicians were doing on their instruments.

It's full of life and soul and all are having fun on the stage and in the audience.
Now, this Grammy version. It sure is perfect. It was analyzed, cut in pieces and ever piece was honed to perfection. It's also very academic, has lightness, no life and everyone looks like they are working super hard instead of having fun. It's an academic piece for academic listeners. Best heard on a 10.000$ super Hifi system to hear each and every tone and effect they worked so hard on. But no money and perfectness will give it back its life and soul and the pure fun it was for Cash to sing and play it and the pure fun it was for the audience to listen to auch a simple great song.
Respect your opinion! We love the original absolutely and wanted to keep the soul of it as much as possible, however no one will ever sound like Johnny, so in doing a cover like this especially as an instrumental, one must change it a bit to give it a new life and bring it out to a new audience. Btw, this was recorded live all in one room in two takes. While there was some editing, most of it was for sound leakage on each track because we all recorded in one room. Also, we had the blessing of John Carter Cash, Johnny's son, which was very important to us that he be involved- which he was, producing it at Cash Cabin and helping with the arrangement. We also had the honor of using some of his Dad's personal guitars on the track which was amazing.
Though this may not change your opinion, I hope this at least clarifies how the track truly came to be :)
