    This was the usual starter motor chorus every morning at the Midland red depot in Wellington. Telford. About 10 of the damn things churning over for ages accompanied with a scene from Steven kings film, the fog.

      @valcook7447 Před 2 lety +3

      It was a similar scene in the First York depot only with about 40 of the beasts cold starting on a morning. There was a big cloud of blue exhaust fog hanging over the depot, after walking down the yard to collect your bus you could taste it for hours afterwards!

    I would definitely be taking a look at the single point cold start heating element on the inlet manifold making sure it works.
    The Nationals were always a pig to start in the cold weather especially with the air operated accelerator pedal but could be improved slightly if the cold start device was working OK.

    I owned a reconditioning company in the 80's & 90's, built 100's of these 510's, Iconic and ground breaking monoblock design for the era, but truly awful to work on and so unreliable... Leyland 'grenade' was a well deserved nicknamed. Good for business though, couldn't build them fast enough. National Mk1 is still my favourite bus closely followed by MK2. Happy days.

    • @basiltaylor8910

    • @d3b536
      @d3b536 Před rokem

      @@basiltaylor8910 I'll conceed the old Gardners have a huge fanbase but i can't for the life of me understand why....Hated working on the damn things, and always seemed each one was built by a guy in his shed than mass produced. Take a pipe from one and it won't fit on another without modification. Also very leaky from dozens of access plates with crappy cork gaskets, smokey.
      Found it amusing when I had to swap dozens of 'Old Gardners' for brand new 'green' Gardners (6LXB Green) for midland mainline..,,. Yet had the same morning clag and only just scraped through the visual smoke check.... Some leg lifting going on there by Gardner i reckon, only thing green about them was the colour they sprayed them.,lol
      That said I do miss the deep burbling low revving sound and a joy to drive because of the massive torque they had.

    Turning over with sporadic cylinder detonation check.
    Blowing more smoke than puffing Billy check.
    Gradual increased frequency of cylinders detonating helping the starter motor along check.
    Gradual phasing in of the motor to keep itself turning until the starter hands over reigns and motor achieves self sufficient idling check.
    This engine gets a clean bill of health.

    @WatchingMamut Před 2 lety

    This can't be right... I mean I see other ppl's comments on remembering them to be hard to start, but that's too way much cranking time and smoke! The starter must be suffering! Is the compression ok? Maybe you should consider installing some sort of an engine pre-heat system, webasto or whatever...

    • @antpoulton1990
      @antpoulton1990  Před 2 lety +2

      Perfectly normal for a 510 in almost sub zero temperatures, and the compression is fine - the engine has had a full strip down and rebuild less than a 1000 miles ago. She has a cold start fitted but appears to be inoperative so it is on the list to be looked at by someone who knows the engines well.

      Some Nationals were fitted with a warm air vent below the front windscreen so bus companies could pump them full of warm air to enable starting on cold mornings and to ease the issues with the notoriously unreliable system that was present in the combined heat exchanger and ventilation located in the roof pod.
      You always knew how annoyed people were when someone told the bus was colder than an ice box and you at the next stop went and t keyed the panel to reset the system and hoped that that would work.
