      This story reminds me of the Season 5 finale of The 100. The last 412 survivors of a nuclear war on Earth escaped onto a spaceship that would travel over a century to a new planet. However, 2 of the survivors chose not to go into cryosleep to keep the ship running & on course until the ship reached the new planet. They also had a son that grew up without any friends so they later put him into cryosleep, but then he took over the responsibilities once his parents died.

      Just imagine, taking a selfless job like, suicide by century ship maintenance person. Only to realized that nobody planned to have more than one person awake at a time... So, you do something covetous and wake up a co-worker who should be asleep for the next 250 years... Lie to them, have children with them,,,, and right before their death, you be like... Oh by the way.

    Even after the death of his dream, he still found the resolve to give future generations some small amount of hope, no matter miniscule...The story I think many of us needed to hear...It matters not how full the glass is, the smallest droplet is worth fighting for. Perhaps you might just be able to refill it.

    • @TheBarrej2006
      @TheBarrej2006 Před 6 měsíci +1

      He was not giving future generations hope, he was telling himself a lie, to avoid a truly impossible choice.
      If he actually believed the lie, he would have woken someone up to replace him.
      He would have done fuel calculations, parts inventories, etc. If he couldn't himself, he would have woken someone up who could have.
      He knows what those answers would be, if he where to look, so he will not look.
      Because this way, he does not need to be affirmatively involve himself in the the end of this ship, and everyone on board.
      Inaction leads to the same results as action, but this way he can lie to himself that he was not involved.

    waking up 1 young fellow with a background similar to his initial one, then mentoring them to maintain the ship, would've by hundreds if not thousands of times increased the odds of the ship reaching its destination. Though I don't know how fuel costs plays into all of this. Maybe they got a perpetual motion machine to make speeding up and slowing down a non-problem. Other than that, it's a pretty neat animation/story, so well done. I couldn't see the artist tagged anywhere, so did you do that?

      Thousands of times better odds, when the odds start at 2×10^-600 is still 2×10^-597.
      He was not giving anyone in those cryopods a chance at a new world.
      He was absolving himself of the responsibility of activity participating in then end of this ship.
      To wake anyone up would be to force them to make the same impossible choice he was faced with, the same choice he would not, could not bare to face.

      @zawsrdtygbhjimokpl6998 Před 6 měsíci +3

      @@TheBarrej2006 why do you think the odds of success were this low? They made the initial journey with no cryopods lost?
      Well, if the apprentice gets lonely, can wake up someone else to keep them company and to help out, since there'll be even more need for ship repair with how it's older now. Thus, they won't have to suffer through the same loneliness. And what choice? It'll only happen if the next world is ruined as well. They can keep hopping around, maybe improving the ship, or even improving their tech, till they either find a good world to colonize, or they get better at terraforming.

    Just fyi, terminal velocity refers to the velocity at which the force form gravity reaches an equilibrium with the forces of drag from air reaistence (terminating the acceleration), it's not a speed which is terminal to people. So attaining this speed is possible in any gravity, and different objects have different terminal velocities dependant on their size, shape, mass and orientation. Maybe you (and the character) knew this though and were using the term poetically.

    These type of stories are always fascinating because the exact details can change so much even just considering the tech involved. Are there androids? Are there self repairing robots? Is the whole thing designed from biomass? Is there a protocol for replacing the janitor? What if the janitor gets lonely? What if there is an error and someone is forced to stay awake ahead of tim? The possibilities are endless.
    My favorite version of these type of stories has a set of people who stayed awake, then proceed to create a family and a vivarium in the middle of the ship.

    Something I never really understood in such 1(/x persons) stays awake for decades while the rest remains in cryo sleep stories is, why not work in shifts? Like 5-10 years and then switch (or switch even more regularly). This way the caretakers lose only a short part of their life instead of their entire life. And it also creates more redundancy.

    Hey I like your content, but ... creators like you have warped my brain in a way that I can't help but pick this story apart. So ...
    Dramatically, when it comes to the feels: Great! But realistically ...
    The obvious solution is to wake someone up to take his place. Someone with life experience who has held responsible positions before, probably male in his 40s or 50s.
    Also since the ship wouldn't function without a janitor, he doomed those people, by dying without a successor.
    If I were to design the janitor role I would have them be a couple and not just one couple but maybe up to 5 couples. One couple would work 5 years have one year overlap with the next couple and rotate thru ...
    It reminds me of NASA not investigating the site of the accident in Andy Weirs "The Martian". That's bull s**t, of course they would have investigated immediately. And if they didn't want to publish pictures of Mark Watneys body they surely could have gotten a Presidential waiver for that.

      No one was ever going to survive that trip.
      That was true from the moment they set out.
      What he is doing is avoiding the impossible choice of choosing their death.
      The outcome is the same, but this way, he can lie to himself, and say that he did not make the impossible choice.
      He just differed that until after he had passed on. Then there would be no one awake to make that impossible choice, save for the unfeeling, uncaring time cosmos itself.
      To wake someone up would be to force them to make the impossible choice, and most likely in a scenario in which it is harder to lie to themselves that this choice can be delayed.
      He knows that they can't even make it to the next planet.
      But he needs to tell himself that maybe, just maybe; and that way I can live with myself.

    • @teekaa2520
      @teekaa2520 Před 6 měsíci

      Well, I guess the story is just not for me.
      Edit:
      I don't see the impossible choice, doesn't mean it wasn't intended. But...
      The reason they send Mark Watney to Mars and gave Kirk the command of the Enterprise, they didn't see the impossible choice either.
      The sad thing is that in the end the Janitor was just a janitor and should not have been given this responsibility.

    Wait but even if they make it to the exoplanet no one will be able to wake them up! He should have defrosted someone else to carry on his work-

    Amazing story. Can't wait for the Glorks to find this ship and use them as cheap labour in mining world #261.

    Have you read one piece, if not I highly recommend you to read it's manga! It's like a greatest Odyssey of our time! ❤

      @@LaymensLameMan I said if not! Than I highly recommend you to read it.
      Btw I recently subscribed his channel because of the video about World Building! In my humble opinion I feel One piece has the greatest world building of our time and I didn't see any one video or a reference about One Piece. Ps_Ignore typo

      @@AwkwardAman lol well yeah but that’s because it conflicts with the rest of his content. People that watch his videos are most likely not that into one piece. It does have good world building from my understanding but I’m not sure about the greatest of our time lol it is a really grand story though.

    I loved this story very much. Thank you for sharing it.
    Also: Some of the commenters on here seem to have missed the point of the story, and that makes me kind of curious. Perhaps the apparent need for more, more logic, more plan, more denial, more survival, and so on, is actually to be expected. After all, is that not the hallmark of what humanity does here in this universe?
    -To have people react to your story as if it was truly happening right now, before their eyes?
    -To have outright rejections of the certainty of The End, thrown in your face, with fury for company?
    WOW. I think someone hit the mark.
