- The village of Poggio alle Mura was born in the early medieval era in a period preceding the year 1000 and developed significantly starting from the second half of the 13th century, following the battle of Montaperti (1260). In 1377 the town of Poggio alle Mura is remembered for the presence of the castle among the properties of the heirs of Francesco di Tommaso Colombini.
The village experienced particular fortune during the Middle Ages given its position which allowed it to easily control the vast Sienese territory between Montalcino, Mount Amiata and the Maremma, at the confluence point of the Orcia and the Ombrone, so much so that it was the subject of also disputed by the lords of the Grosseto area, the Aldobrandeschi family, and by Florence, which feared further development of Siena towards the sea. The castle was the property of the Tolomei, of the Placidi, except for the brief period when the Republic of Siena took it away from Ardello Placidi, accused of being a rebel, to give it to the Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala, and later returned it to the Placidi . Poggio alle Mura had 143 inhabitants in 1833.
In 1978 it was purchased by the Italian-American Mariani family, and the Villa Banfi company was founded there which transformed the village into a tourist-accommodation structure linked to the wine-growing activity.
In 2007, the fossil remains of a whale that lived in the area about five million years ago, in the Pliocene period in which the warm waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea covered the area occupied by the current vineyards, were found here.
The castle of Poggio alle Mura, already present in the early medieval period, was completely rebuilt in 1438 and restored during the 17th century. At the turn of the Second World War, a wing of the castle was mined and destroyed, and subsequently rebuilt. Along the curtain wall there are two doors, the main one and a smaller one that leads to the courtyard of honor, an example of Renaissance architecture with arches, ribbed vaults, rear windows and a 17th century Medici coat of arms.]
Inside there is the bottle and glass museum, named after John F. Mariani, founder of the "Banfi" winery.

Magnifico Catello e Magnifico luogo.. Montalcino
