- From supplements to "sleepy girl mocktails," magnesium seems to be all the rage these days. But magnesium is more than just a trendy replacement for melatonin; it is an essential mineral responsible for nearly 300 different enzyme reactions in your body. It helps your muscles and bones function properly and maintains your heart rhythm.
Magnesium plays an understated role in helping us sleep. It does not have a direct correlation to our sleep -- like melatonin. Instead, magnesium creates the conditions for sleep by calming the central nervous system, relaxing our muscles, and helping regulate the production of melatonin.
Join sleep expert, Dr. Michael Breus, as he explains why magnesium is so important to our overall health and our sleep, and what you should look for in a magnesium supplement.

I have been taking magnesium glycinate when I can't fall back to sleep in the middle of the night. Liquid magnesium helps me to fall asleep faster.
This was super helpful, thanks Michael!
Such great information thank you!!
Great video! Love the book "The Magnesium Miracle"
Taking 800mg magnesium glycinate through out the day helps me in so many ways. I’m 33 and thought insomnia was just what my adult life would be lol.
800mg ??? That's not too much ?
@@anz2441 not for me. im 240 lbs 6'3 and very active and muscular. my lady works out a coupel times a week and it much smaller; 250mg is great for her.
Thank you for this helpful info. What is the best time to take magnesium for insomnia? And which version is more effective?
I started taking magnesium citrate a year ago, haviing spent the previous 10 years trying everything for menopausal sleep issues. Magnesium is simply amazing. I actually sleep deeply and all the way through the night. If I don't take it for a few days my nights go back to wakefulness and light sleep. I absolutely recommend anyone menopausal with sleep issues to try it
How much magnesium do you take
@@ericachavis8853 I take around 200 mg. I weighed out the first time for accuracy and found a small spoon that the amount fits into. But every bag should give instructions on dosage. Usually by weight, I hope that helps.
Thank you
What do you think about getting it through Epsom Salts in the bath in the evening for good sleep?
For better sleep, Melatonin or magnesium supplements for first time user?
Ooh I had the restless legs syndrome during the night, but I was a teenager practicing tons of exercise a day, and to be fair, I was underfed and didn't get to receive supplements. Yup eventually that caught up with me during my thirties.
so when should one take magnesium, before bed or in the morning? On the packaging it says to take it in the morning with breakfast
Hi, it is ok to combine magnesium glycinate and magnesium threonate What is the lowest recommended dose of each if taking both?
It should have the US rda in the lavel
Magnesium glycinate contains 14% elemental magnesium, that is a 100mg capsule yields 14mg of magnesium. My issue is that glycine, oddly enough, has a laxative effect on me starting at 1 gram, so I can't really take high doses of the glycinate form. I prefer threonate and take 6 capsules daily.
Using supplements without defficency is it dangerous?
Dr Breus, I can't even _find_ magnesium glycinate -- everyone is selling magnesium biglycinate, instead.
What is the difference between magnesium glycinate and magnesium biglycinate?
Is there a difference? Is the difference important?
Additionally, I've noticed that whenever I see magnesium listed as an ingredient, rather than a stand-alone supplement, it's almost invariably in the form of magnesium oxide (especial in cheaper one-a-day multi-vitamins) Also common is magnesium stearate, which doesn't appear to be intended as a supplement at all. Are these useful/how useful are these?
I have taken Magnesium Glycinate before it gaves me the most vivid weirdest dream in my sleep 😢 , anyone can suggest anything or know why ?
reduce the dose
What about magnesium spray
I have not found any data to suggest that Mag Spray ( like on the feet) will penetrate the skin enough to actually help with a magnesium deficiency. So I eat mine.
I thought magnesium shortage isn't detected in your blood very fast. Only with very low levels.
From what I have the blood serum levels of magnesium are almost always in the right range unless you are dead. That is not where you will find a deficiency
Do you mean to magnesium
L-threonate?
Gotta maintain those CZcams standards. three-oh-neight.
There's a typo in your thumbnail.
Most people have pretty high expectations about supplements making marked changes in their health. They are not drugs and the effects may be subtle or barely noticeable. Always check to see if an influencer has a business related to the supplement being promoted, because often they are. This includes scientists/medical professionals.
ALL SUBSCRIPTIONS ARE FORMED TO Make money off of views as YOU TUBE PAYS FOR VIEWS...... and sell their supplements AND THE VIDEO IS A COMMERCIAL TO BUY THEIR SUPPLEMENTS!!....LOL 134 TIMES
DOES NOT INCLUDE , ITS ALWAYS A DOCTOR OR CHIROPRACTOR!
Magnesium gel capsules made my painful foot, ankle and lower legs Stop. Haven't had a single one since I started. If I get a little bit of diarrhea I just take one every other night.
I meant stopped my spasms!!
😂@@PeanutButter-yu2oy
But WHICH type of magnesium did you take for the pain?
@@lynne3989glycinate, citrate, and malate seem to be the best ones to supplement in general.
Sound sleep is also very important for men to have a healthy sex life.
