Buckingham Palace is state property, and is used for some govt functions. Maintaining it is no different than maintaining the White House or Capitol Building. It's not done for the "Queen's opulence", and if the UK becomes a republic, it would still be maintained as a museum, like Versailles in France.

Buckingham Palace is never felt to be home like Windsor, Sandringham or Balmoral. There are bedrooms for the family if needed together with their own bathrooms and visiting dignities and Heads of State are welcomed. There are staff bedrooms and many offices. In fact the Palace is considered the Office of the Firm. The State owns Buckingham Palace and it is open in the summer for the public to view, there are usually 4 Garden Parties a year when 3000-4000 people attend and there are several investitures when those given New Year Honours and The Queen's Birthday Honours are presented with their awards.
The Palace was built for the Duke of Buckingham in the 17th century. Only the State Rooms are opulent HM's sittingroom only has a 2 bar electric fire, central heating can damage the beautiful furniture as does sunlight.

If Buckingham Palace were a grand hotel needing inspections and permits, there would be a ton of flags. We are reminded in 1st Peter 2:9. We are a chosen generation,a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people, that we should show forth the praises of Him who has taken us of darkness into his marvellous light. And from 1st Samuel 8, Israel rebelled for a King when God was their King who provided all.Howevet He told Samuel go ahead and Samuel told them you would become servants bakers, gardeners, tailors ,cooks etc.You will give a tenth of your seed, now would be our financial energies and verse 18, you would cry out in that day because of your King and the lord 🙏 will not hear you.So it is now, so we have a picture of who we all are and to hold on to our Savior who has come to restore us to royal dome supernaturally. One day soon it will be all for us

they do NOT live on public money, certain expenses are paid, such as official travel, renovations, state dinners etc
these buildings belong to the nation and if we had a president him and his team, the same expenses would be paid, plus wages
and actually all that comes out of our taxes is for security, anything else comes out of the Sovereign Grant
the media call this taxpayers money, but its a percentage of the profits of the crown estates
King George III handed over the crown estates, but the government made a deal to pay the monarch an annual payment, a good for us actually as we have most of the profits
and having royal family makes a huge difference to our economy

The Windsors would still be MASSIVELY wealthy even if they stopped being the heads of state of the UK and Commonwealth countries tomorrow. They would probably be able to become even more wealthy because without the constitutional restrictions placed on them as royals they could truly do with their massive wealth what they wished.
