13. Sailing to Santorini | Sailing the Cyclades - Anafi to Santorini and Ios | Sailing Greece

- This week we leave Anafi and sail to Santorini in the cyclades. It's a pleasant sail as we test out the auto pilot with great results. Our plan is to sail up through the caldera and enjoy floating in the bay while enjoying lunch and a cheeky vino.
We capture some great footage of Thira with the Mavic Pro Drone but struggle to land it back on the boat as the conditions worsen. This is pretty funny to watch as all goes wrong.
Due to deep water and many rocks we decide to leave Santorini and sail to Manganari Bay in Ios where we anchor. It's another beautiful anchorage as we continue to be blessed with little swell. Hope you enjoy the video, next week we continue crossing the cyclades as we visit Milos.

About us:
Our names are Jason and Tracey and we traded our house, cars, business, job and security for freedom, adventure, travel and living simply amongst nature and the seas on our 45 foot sailing boat, Kawai.
We don't know exactly where the winds will take us at this stage but over the next year we hope to visit Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia, Italy, Spain, Morocco, Gibraltar, Canary Islands and then across the Atlantic Ocean.

Hi Guys ! Re the Drone. As others have said, catch it from underneath, and quickly turn it upside down. It will turn itself off automatically.
As you know, I sail single handed. I have to fly the Drone in, catch it, and flip it on my own !!! I practiced many times on land before I tried it on the yacht !

Hey John, yes we have since learnt this trick haha, made it interesting on the day. We were lucky to visit Santorini 12 years ago on land and had a great time. Glad you enjoyed it! Hope you are surviving lockdown :)

Thanks Paul, glad you enjoyed it. Yeah we haven't haven't seen another sail boat across the whole Cyclades since we left Kos, we knew it would be quiet but didn't expect none!
We were chuckling so much watching you trying to land the drone. Now we've decided to practice catching ours on land before attempting a yacht launch and retrieval.😮😄
Hahaha glad you enjoyed it! I see you've had some of your own drone issues when one nearly hit you in the face :) good luck with your practicing, we need to practice it more too!

Hi guys just found you channel last night watched pretty much all you vids and subbed , keep up the good work. You guys are a pretty much doing what the wife and I are about to do. I'm an Aussie from Adelaide/Brisbane. I met my wife in Turkey 20 years ago She's from central Turkey a town very close to Goreme/ Cappadocia. We have sold the house, business and put all our gear in storage in Brisbane, as you guys have done by the sounds of it. So your channel has come at a great time for us. Only advantage we have is we speak Turkish. Anyway will you guys be coming back to Turkey? We live in Fethiye/Calis if so would be nice to meet and catch up for a beer and hang out with some Aussies ;) and if you needed any help with translations or repairs while here we would be happy to help in return to ask you a million questions on how your journey is going so far etc etc hehe.... This may have been asked before - what is the font you are using for the subtitles and the name of your yacht? We would like to use it on our new-to-us Bavaria that we have recently purchased....and keep up the nice work with the video's, it's great to see a winter perspective on Greece!

Hi Howard, glad you are enjoying the videos :). The drone we use is a DJI Mavic Pro, we also have a GoPro 7. We also have a Canon EOS 70D. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
Hi Guys, love your video's great stuff. Just a tip with the Mavic Pro. The drone tries to get up again because you have the downward sensors activated and when you grab the drone it senses that it is "too close" to the ground and tries to get up. Also to turn the drone up side down will work to stop the motors but it is intended only to be used in emergency situations because it is bad for the motors when to rotate the drone horizontal with the rotors turning. In order to stop the drone completely simply put both joysticks at the same time downwards and inwards for a few seconds, that should stop the motors in an intended way. Cheers.

It is quite chilly at times and we have experienced many storms, rain, high winds during winter in the Cyclades. We'd prefer summer but also have enjoyed the challenges of winter. Coming in to Spring now the weather is getting much better thankfully!

Thanks for watching Matthias! We are now headed to Croatia, Montenegro, back to Greece for a bit then on to Italy (through Messina Strait), Spain, Gibraltor, Morocco, Canary Islands and across the Atlantic. That's the plan at the moment anyway :)

What are the services like in your stops during the off season?

Good question, it varies between islands but even on Kos a bigger greek island the chandleries were closed and a lot of shops/restaurants are also closed or their hours are reduced. We had to get a part on our boat fixed and the weather held it up a lot! We have managed to find most things we needed though just took a bit of extra effort/time. Thank you for watching :)
Trick for the drone is to fly it backwards towards yourself so your controls are correct. Then once you make the catch flip the drone over so it thinks it has crashed and will power down 👌

Hi Vagelis, thanks for watching :) we are heading through the Ionian to Croatia. Haha no winter in Greece is not the best option, fortunately it is getting a little warmer and sunnier now. In short, we sold everything except for a rental property which gives us enough money to survive week to week.

Seasickness.. please make a video about "heavy" head and seasickness. In santorini my uncke Spyros have a tavern. Propably you have eaten in my uncles tavern.. :) do you have kids?? You make some?? No worries at all :) Oh no, seasickness is not fun I imagine! I haven't felt it yet and neither has Jase (he has in the past in big seas and a motor boat), but we will mention maybe when we are crossing the ocean it could be a problem. We have in the past eaten at a few tavernas on Santorini maybe it was your uncles :) such a stunning place! Hahaha no kids at this stage. Thanks again for watching and chatting with us!
So, seriously you videos are awesome! But the sound is soooooo bad that its hardly understandable. Just wanted to provide some constructive criticism because you can be so much more amazing. There is no one like you doing this. And its helping me learn a lot.
