If you attack you have a plan of attack and you know what you will be doing while enemy doesn't. They also don't know what they will be doing and their plan of action is reduced to mere reaction

yeah you really have to be defensive in the vortex unless you feel safe to not build walls anymore

@@ruukinen rogue armies are no concern if you control many provinces the threat is actually the ritual armies themselves but if you have an army stationed near the spawned ritual armies its easy to dispatch them and also they are spawned far away from the ritual city itself that is why you will have time to defend it

This is an easy one: every time I build walls some huge unstoppable stack flattens the place regardless.
Seems you have never faced the issue, that the Ai is moving with many small armies through your land and demolishes all. Walls are just for buying time and to force the enemy to attack you with the main army or to let it be.
@@hakon1027 Yep. On Legend level, you can predict where they will attack and counter before they even strike/assault settlement. On typical player level, you get walls so you can react fast enough, so they don't waltz over more then 1-2 settlements. It all depends on race, Dwarf and Skaven should 100% of time get walls, especially on edges of your empire and in early stages. Lizardmen got useless walls and so on.
The point of walls isnt really the garrison provided, its so that you can bring other armies to defend the settlement and not just loose it instantly when the slightest force comes
@@jakubs.5966 I eventually stopped building walls as Vampire Counts because their garrisons are so weak, but any ranged faction can pull off some neat wins if you get lucky. Even if the settlement is still lost it can buy time to reinforce or weaken the army enough that the next settlement can hold.
@@realglassberg8022 Yeah, AI often doesnt have siege attacker, but even if they do they use 2 armies for a walled settlement often giving you 5-10 turns to react.

'If you hide all your units during an ambush, the AI won't trigger.'
Legend this year:
'If you ambush, the AI won't trigger.'
That's some quality AI improvement on CA's part.
Just don't overuse the warpstone. We still need you for WHIII.

Honestly, I think we have all been here at some point at playing. Where we didn’t build walls, and paid for it. This is just how you learn.
But Legend, skaven is a proud race that fights using staunch line of slaves.

As fair as I am aware, he has a pretty large backlog of videos, he's always ahead of schedule. So I think these vids would likely have been recorded at least a few days ago.

There should be a series where people have to answer to LOTW for their reason of doing things. I.E Why they didn't wall their settlements.
The ambush defence AI is really something else, had a battle where I ambushed a lizardmen army with carnosaurus and stegadons, and they just decided do stay still and get rekt by my jezzails and ratling guns.They just decided not to move at them at all, even at ~150 range.

The passive Battle AI is killing the game for me right now to be honest. It's easiest to see on ambush battles but I feel like the normal field battles are really passive after the last patch as well. Any way you can send CA a line about it Legend? Maybe a PSA video? Love the content man, keep on keepin' on.
I've said it before but it was a more egregious bug than cavalry, and something that should have been hotfixed out of the game literally over a month ago. One of the youtubers should have put them on blast because they clearly won't do anything otherwise.

I build walls in every settlement. Sometimes I play really risky, and don't build walls until the minor settlements reach tier 3. I know, I'm a wild man.

When in doubt, attack!
I mean level 3 walls and above give you a pretty good garrison. All you need to is recruit a lord/hero and dump some points into unit buffs and it’s pretty much good to go.
But that does depend on how many stacks show up.
Level 5 walls can pretty much keep out one or two powerful stacks.
My play style is always recruiting heroes that can damage enemy forces a treat so when they do attack there’s half an army left.
Heroes and lords are so undervalued for what they can do on the campaign map.
Take wizards in empire. Recruit a beast wizard or another crappy one and they’ll make havoc against enemy settlements, armies and even enemy lords and heroes.

@@blanck7457 I see playthroughs where people never have any agents on the map. Like dude? Two agents running around can damn near win the game for you and you barely have to lift a finger.
Assassinate enemy army leader? Done.
Take out 1/3rd the enemy garrison/army before you attack? Done.
Destroy walls? Done.
Stop enemy army moving? Done.

I've definitely made that "major settlements automatically have walls I don't need to build them up" mistake before. Thankfully LOTW is here for all of us newbies to help git gud.

The weirdest thing is, when your anything other than Skaven walls might not make sense, but as skaven you make money from the walls so it's weird not to build them.
As Bretonnia you get free walls at tier 3 so money is making more sense there but like, Bretonnia with 20 unit garrisons everywhere is pretty strong too, if you want minimal amount of armies so that other factions don't see you as a huge threat.

Aside from the fact that Skaven have such good towers that even tier 4 ones can let you face pretty much any odds you don't control large army, don't they provide income? Meaning there really isn't any reason to not build walls. I haven't played anything but Chaos, Empire, and Vampire Counts for 3 patches though, so I might be outdated.
walls walls and even more walls even if they are shitty ones like the one from the lizardmen it can delay attack for 1-2 turns enough for you to react

I never played the Vortex campaigne in any other mode than Easy, does the player not get told where the Ritual is going to happen in the higher difficulties?
@@aris.a2912 No differences to Easy Mode there.
But on Easy you get told which three cities the ritual takes place each time, making defending them easier since the enemies will spawn close to those places.

I love walls, least as dwarves, I hate my gresnskin walls though lol
Shit...I just started my first ever TWW2 game playing as Skaven and I've already have 15+ settlements and NO walls anywhere....am I screwed? When I did my first ritual, my territory is small so I can just patrol my borders and keep the Chaos army out, but I'm nearing my second ritual and I just realize the Chaos can spawn INSIDE your empire and near a settlement with no army!
(Btw, the reason I didn't build walls was because I never needed to in other Total War games. They don't give much except some public order, and "offense is the best defense" works for nearly any TW game I played)

I never realised how bad the amubsh defence AI was
it only got bad in the patch before last. They were trying to patch out an ambush cheese and somehow made it far worse for everyone.
Chaos and Norsca are easily the worst too since their only missile troop is the hell cannon. High elf archer armies don't feel it quite as bad
