- Garrett found his first gold coin ever on the Oregon Trail! I wasn't there but he managed to get it on camera still. Around this time we also discovered and metal detected an 1850s military campsite along the trail and found lots of buttons and bullets.
All finds were made on private property with the owner's permission.
Gear Used:
Metal Detector: Minelab Equinox 600
Pinpointer: Garrett Pro-Pointer
Drone: DJI Phantom 3 - Zábava
So happy for Garrett. He was with me when I found mine and mentioned I was shaking. Fun to see he had that experience as well. Congratulations! Lots of very nice other finds as well.
That’s awesome man, thanks for stopping by!
That’s fantastic! Congratulations to you as well
Congratulation Garrett on the gold coin!! Congratulations to everyone on a fabulous hunt. Thanks for taking us along.
Thanks for stopping by!
Don’t have the words! Awesome stuff fellas!!!
Thanks Will! I was speechless too when I got the phone call that he found one
What a hunt! Glad to see all those hard earned finds! Thanks for taking us along!!
Thanks Troy! Glad you enjoyed!
Zach i am tuned in every week brother ! the style of hunting y’all do is right up my alley . enjoyed seeing y’all’s excitement when pulling that historic stuff from the ground . keep doing exactly what your doing . another gold coin , more buttons , bullets , and a trime ! i also feel your pain when the storage space maxes out while on a good spot lol . your one of my favorite channels right now ! excellent work gentlemen. 💥👍🏴☠️🤠
Thanks man glad to hear you are enjoying the videos and the channel! I have done a lot of different types of detecting but I think detecting the westward trails has been my favorite so far.
Congrats to Garrettt on the Gold! Congrats on the Trime too! And so many bullets. Great finds ! see you on the next one. John
Thanks for stopping by John! Glad you enjoyed
Those things are so small! No wonder they got lost so much. I would hate to have been the guy to lose that back then. Dollar could buy a decent amount of goods.
They are small! It’s like they were asking for them to be lost with how small they are. And yeah 1 dollar in 1852 would be equivalent to about $35 today. Insane
I think the same way. I've found five silver dollars, and other old silver coins, and it seems silly, but I feel sorry for the people who lost them. They were worth a lot back then.
What an epic video!! Congrats to each of y’all for some great finds!
Thanks Bob! Now we need to get you on some trail finds!!
Awesome job Garrett!! Congratulations 🍾🎈🎉🎊!!! Another FANTASTIC video loaded with GR8 finds!!! 👊🏻
Thanks Brian appreciate you stopping by!!
Thank you!
Just subbed .. I like your enthusiasm, your love for the lord keep it up
Thanks! God bless!
Fantastic day guys.
Thanks Gary I appreciate it!
Men died on that spot. Incredible when you think about it. Nice finds.
Thanks, It really is. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are unmarked graves not too far from there
Hell yeah man! Happy to see you this excited doing what ya love. This is Ryan Cochran btw
The Oregon Trail was a CrAzy Freaking ride man. It was dangerous, with crime and violence. It was riddled with death and illness. It was a crazy camping/party/festival/riot thing with no security It was no joke, 2170 miles of pain and sadness. Finding something from that is beyond EPIC. Great finds only 2169 miles to go! Happy Hunting!
Thanks for stopping by! It really was a crazy ride. To think of the story behind all these finds is unbelievable. Telling the story of westward expansion. It’s so amazing to be able to dig these items and I will remember it for the rest of my life for sure.
CONGRATS MAN!! I found an 1852 gold dollar earlier this summer. Looking for arrowheads on the Santa Fe trail here in Kansas! Awesome job brother!!
Awesome hunt. Congrats Garrett on the gold coin. Lots of gold been coming out of the ground lately! I've never found a trime myself but hope to some day! Thanks for the video.
Thanks for stopping by! Yeah I’ve been detecting for 7 years and never seen a gold coin found and now I’ve seen two come out in the past couple months. Crazy
Great video, thank you for sharing! Congratulations Garrett!
Thanks so much glad you enjoyed!
It blows my mind seeing the original wagon tracks from Google earth. So much history. Much of the trail crosses over family land too. Amazing finds!
Congrats on your awesome gold coin! That is definitely the find of a lifetime!💖
Thanks for stopping by Cynthia! I know if Garrett sees this he would say thanks as well!
Thank you!!
SO RAD!! You can't beat that rush!! Nothing but cattle sniffing at em' for years and you come around!!! Gratz Garret!! !!
Thanks! I know if Garrett saw this he would say thanks as well!
Wicked awesome hunt!! Minnie ball after Minnie ball, a trime, great buttons, what a great spot, can't ask for any better than that!
And rhe GOLD of course!! 🔥
Thanks!! Yeah truly can’t ask for a better trail spot!! History was saved on that hunt for sure
Great hunt! So thankful to witness someone else that's thankful to Him. Was a real joy seeing the love of God being shared by friends while exploring mans past. Great video, you can bet i'll be back. On another note: 1) Why do they call them a ball? 2) What's a J-hook used for? New to that kind of detecting so hope ya don't mind questions. I detect nuggets of gold. Most of what we find out here is "newer" bullets.
Thanks Richard! God deserves all the glory. So for your first question they call it a ball because that was kind of just the generic term for a bullet back then even though Minieballs are not necessarily spherical. As for your second question a J-hook is also known as a knapsack hook and was used to keep a soldiers knapsack that they kept their personal belongings in closed.
@@GreatOutdoorsDetecting Thanks. To God be the glory. not as dumb as i was a few hrs. ago:>)
AWESOME VIDEO MAN!!! Thanks for all you do with editing these
Thanks man no problem!! It’s a lot of fun putting these together
swinging the outback i only saw you like that once and that was for a football game
Came right out the gates with that one!!! CONGRATS!!
Thanks for stopping by!
What an amazing site and video, congrats on the gold coin and trime. Awesome buttons, bullets and J hooks. 👍
Thanks so much for stopping by!
Very Nice1 Happy Holidays guys!
Thanks Chris you too!
What a DREAM hunt!! Congrats to all 3 of you! Truly amazing finds! God bless!
Thanks Tracy!! It really was a dream hunt! Even though I wasn’t there for Garrett’s gold I was just as excited watching the clips of it. God bless!
Thanks….it was amazing to see the gold coin unearthed in person!!
Congratulations Garrett. Love watching these videos. Keep them coming please
Thanks Don glad you enjoyed!
Thanks Don!
You all did amazing!!! Love watching!!!
Thanks Amy!! Glad you enjoyed!
? Soo what is a j-hook? I seen you guys dig them, but what are they?
Good question, I should have put a slide in the video explaining what they are. They are also known as knapsack hooks and they were what closed the flap of a soldier’s knapsack that carried their personal belongings
Way to go Garrett!
Hey Bob! How are you doing?
@@GreatOutdoorsDetecting OK. Ben and I are heading out tomorrow to door knock. Been tough detecting lately
@@robertwynn5844 Hope you guys do well! Jim and I are getting out tomorrow as well
Thanks Bob!
Great finds guys I knew sooner than later your going to find gold there’s nothing like finding your first gold coin congratulations Garrett!!
Thanks Mark! We knew the sites we were hunting had the potential and it finally happened!
You sound like the voice of experience Mark! May I ask how many gold coins you found? I am still on zero!
Fantastic post! I've been lucky enough to find two gold coins here in the UK. One Young Head Victorian sovereign of 1857 and even better...A gold Quarter Noble of Edward the Third from about 1450. Both times I was by myself but you could probably hear my whoops your side of the pond. Huge congrats once again from Hampshire in the UK. Great channel. Look forward to more posts. Cheers PB.
Thanks man I appreciate it! Glad to have viewers from across the pond
@@GreatOutdoorsDetecting I'm lucky enough to have sites to detect on that have 2000 years of history behind them. But the joy I have watching you guys dig a Dragoon button on the Oregon Trail is why I love this hobby and the people who are saving history. Cheers from Hampshire
Congratulations to you Patrick! Wow!
Great video and really super finds. I always metal detect on the South shore of Long Island New York nice finds but I love the relics great job
Thanks for stopping by! Glad you enjoyed.
Awesome video. All the Relics the Trym and the amazing 1 Dollar Gold Coin. What an excellent area you found. Take Care
Thanks for stopping by! Yeah these types of sites are hard to find
I hear you there. Finding places like that can take a lot of time but when it happens it's awesome.
So exciting!! Unreal finds!!! Great job!!!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed!!
Oh wow congratulations Garrett on your first ever gold, that is awesome. Congratulations also to Jim for his first Trime, also to you Zach for your great finds too. There really were some fantastic finds on this episode, thank you for sharing, much love. xx 💖
Thanks so much Sue! We had a lot of fun on this one, it's been a great digging season so far
@@GreatOutdoorsDetecting It certainly has, congrats. xx
Thank you so very much!
@@garrettseuser5240 Congrats Garrett, that was one amazing find, you should frame it and display somewhere safe like a bedroom. xx
That was fun watching. The excitement is catching. 😊. There is a sign about 1½ blocks to the NW of a duplex I live in SW KS, that states it was the old Santa Fe Trail. There is a lot of history surrounding this trail also. Happy hunting & stay safe. Grandma Smith.
So glad you enjoyed! Detecting the trails is so thrilling. That’s really cool you live by the Santa Fe trail. I have detected on the Santa Fe Trail once near Great Bend, KS but I mostly search the Oregon Trail. Lots of history around here.
@@GreatOutdoorsDetecting I just came across your channel. Are you in Kansas? I'm in salina
I'm about as excited as they are! Almost feels like I found it!😃 👍👍❤
really great awesome finds....I like this Video and i hope, you´ll find much more stuff like this. Greatings from Northern Germany.👍👍
It would be even more amazing if Garrett found it with a Garrett.
What a find!!!! Awesome video you guys
Thanks Chase!!
What a great day of Diggin. J hooks everywhere. A gold coin and a trime. Bullets galore. Definitely an awesome permission. Happy hunting and be well
Thanks so much glad you enjoyed!
What’s a J hook? What was its purpose?
Congratulations on that gold. What an amazing assortment of buttons, bullets, and J Hooks. That Trime was sweet. Good luck, happy hunting and take care. ✌
Thanks man appreciate you always stopping by!
Congrats on the gold coin - an amazing find for sure. The ground is frozen here in Michigan, so I'm probably done for the season.
Thanks Kevin! That’s crazy...just the other day here we had a high of 72 degrees...in December lol
Terrific finds guys!
Thanks man!!
Congratulations
Thanks Jim I know if Garrett sees this he would be thanking you too!
What a brilliant hunt some great find really enjoy the video keep them coming
Man that is awesome! Congrats. On that find, wow!!💯👍
Thanks for stopping by!!
Congratulations on the gold ‼️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
The Artillery button is beautiful. You guys found a great spot. I would go back there for days. I found my first 3ringer at DigStock. I just stood there holding it…imagining who dropped it, what their life must have been like at that time and how horrible it must have been to be shot with or to shoot one at another person. Very surreal moment for me. Really enjoyed your video. Great job.
Thanks for stopping by! That’s exactly the feeling we get with every find we make on the trail. Such an amazing feeling.
Well I can tell you from personal experience that it is a lot worse to get shot than it is to shoot someone else
At least thats how it has been for me
So exciting! Beautiful find.
How was the J-hook used?
I just asked the same question . . . .
that's incredible, totally appropriate reaction to finding that gold coin. Hope to get one of my own someday
Awesome. Congrats on the gold coin
Thanks for stopping by!
So i was just thinking ... I wonder if they find a spill like last time ... And Jim nails it !! Congrats too all u guys to a magnificent hunt especialy to Garrett for his gold and Jim for his first time ! I always enjoy your vids and can't wait for the next !
Thanks man appreciate you stopping by and glad you enjoyed!
Thank you!!
Congratulations on the gold coin . Are you going to retire your machine now lol . I’m kidding . Amazing 🤜💥🤛
Thanks for stopping by! Glad you enjoyed!
What a day or several days . I don't have that stuff out here in Commiefornia so it's awesome to see you guy's find amazing things from our past . I have beaches I can hit that are just blocks from my house but they got hit hard a couple years back by these 2 guys . They found a lot of gold and silver rings but weren't selling but I did learn some things about metal detecting . That week I bought a Whites MX Sport . Haven't found any silver or gold yet only some change here and there along with lots of trash . Happy hunting and Merry Christmas .
Plenty of history in California, actually part of the Oregon trail goes to Sutters Fort
@@LS-ys8nr
True . Wish I had a detector with me on my property hunt a couple weeks ago . Wasn't my land and the realtor who was with me probably would have objected .
Great video of great finds...
Congratulations, its always such a thrilling experience when we pull gold out of the earth.
Man that’s awesome. I live in Florida on the Treasure Coast and I have a 1711 silver coin that came off the beach but I haven’t found anything yet. I keep a metal detector in my truck for after the storms and one day 🙏 Great work on everything you guys found. I got to get a better rig.
Holy holy crap!!!
You said you knew there would be a gold coin out there somewhere! What made you think that? I missed the part of the video where you said what was there before. Congratulations! You did it!
Man, I got to stop watching these. It's making me jealous...lol. Great job guys!!
Lol thanks man! We need to do a dig again I always enjoy catching up with you
@@GreatOutdoorsDetecting same here buddy. I have been thinking about trying to come up that way.
The Sooner State Diggers For sure. Even if you can’t make it all the way up here we can meet up somewhere in between. For me it’s not about the spot when I dig with you I just enjoy the fellowship with you
@@GreatOutdoorsDetecting same here buddy
what is the make & model of your finder? same question about the smaller hand held?
AWESOME 😁
Thanks!!
Wonderful discovery of a massive encampment! You lucky and strategic research/historians! I would appreciate more historical information about the artifacts. What was a hook used for and ho
That hook plus gold coin plus general sevice button add all those bullets yhat were found nonetheless not found..think about it..i imagine a wagon with gold coins tied down with rope and those hooks being escorted by cavalry either east or west and was raided either by indians or bandits..wagons may have ovetturned and indians wouldnt care as much for the coins as bandits
WOW!!! Beautiful coin!!!
Thanks Matt!
Enjoyed watching great finds
Nice dollar gold piece they are rare have to check this video out Jimmy Cross Bones he found a bunch of gold dublooms on the beach and they are gold
Thanks for stopping by! I’ll have to check that out
It’s an amazing video! Wow! Real shipwreck treasure! 😍
Awesome video. That's a cool Star Wars shirt.
Very nice finds
*just WOW you guys!*
*Ever considered using drone equipped with a ground penetrating radar sensor? Love what you do.*
*New subscriber from Costa Rica!*
Wow gold
soo happy for you :)
Thanks for stopping by!
Great video. I'm a few miles from the Spanish Trail. I have searched a little but have not found anything valuable.
There's been an UPTICK of these being found recently... ANYONE ELSE noticing this? Why!? CONGRATS
Thanks!! Yeah I know it’s crazy. I’ve been detecting for 7 years and never seen a gold coin and now in the past 2 months I’ve seen 2 come out of the ground
@@GreatOutdoorsDetecting ALMOST 4 years HUNTING here... STILL DREAMING AND CHASING... LOW TONES ARE MY DOWNFALL!!!
the uptick,,,,, thats a sticky question. detectors today are so much more powerful and sinsitive than ever before but i guess the true answer would be that most of the gold coins being found and recorded here on youtube are fake finds. ive been detecting for 45 years, i could fill two 5 gallon buckets with coins ive found, old and new, not to mention the hundreds of rings, but ive never found a gold coin in all that time. im not saying he didnt find this coin, its possible, but you want to know what a gold coin would look like that was lost on the oregon trail after 1500 miles of rough travel. put a gold coin in a rock tumbler with a hand full of other coins and run it for an hour, i assure you it wouldnt look very nice afterwards.
@@GreatOutdoorsDetecting WE ALL WIN TOGETHER WHEN THIS HAPPEN... VIA A SHARED, GREATEST HOBBY EVER!!! 💯🙏
I have no idea of the year. It wasn’t clear on the vid altho I froze the frame and you mumbled the year when you said it. Never heard bullets called mini balls. Can’t believe you don’t have a brush or toothpick to clean off buttons or coins.
The year on the gold coin is 1852. Yeah Minieballs are a special type of lead bullet made around the 1850s and 60s. They were used a lot in the Civil War and on the western frontier
Great hunt 😁
Thanks Larry!
First time watching you find good stuff. I know people who metal detect don't like giving out there exact location but what state are you in? Congrats to the guy who found the gold coin, so awesome!
Thanks Judy! I would say the state but there are some people who watch this channel that might be able to narrow down where I was more if I say. I will say its east of Wyoming though.
Congratulations brother I found a 1890 $20 gold coin a few months back in a creek here in NC near a confederate camp. I haven't searched it just yet but I'm about to when my new machine comes in :)
Nice finds.😊
Cool spot !
What did the gold coin ring up at? That’s awesome. I couldn’t imagine
That gold coin's so clean...it's like the mint worker buried it there! Good for you!!!
What kind of metal detector do you have.
What were the j hooks used for back then on the trail?
Well, it's been uncirculated since the 1850- 60s. Congrats to your find!
New to the channel and wat a find
Thanks and welcome to the channel! Thanks for stopping by
Felicidades compañero granallado desarian muy pocas sobre todo yo saqué hace años una similar de cinco dólares hace como unos tres año saludo
watching from New Zealand here, wished you would put a value on the treasures you find, coins, buttons, bullets other wise the finds really mean not a lot to those of us outside the USA.
Thanks for stopping by! Yeah I might have to incorporate something like that a little bit more
Congratulations!
GPS location is on your phone for UpTo 2 years.... location is not a secret. 🤔🤔 Google is probably already selling the information ?
Great finds. What was the J-hook and how was it used?
Thanks! The J-hook is also known as a knapsack hook, and it held the flap down on a soldiers knapsack that they used to carry personal items.
@@GreatOutdoorsDetecting Thank you for your response. That explains a lot and I should have known that, but even though I love history, uniforms and accouterments of equipment is something I've never studied.
Great job, nice assortment!
Have you guys ever thought of using colored flags (landscaping flags)to mark each of your finds?
At the end of the day you can look at the pattern and possibly find missed areas to search and record?
Good luck!
Omg well done man great catch
Holy shmoly..... Thats freaking awesome.
Thanks so much!
very nice find
WOW Good for You buddy I can't wait to get my metal detector so I can start finding good things I ordered it online week ago and I also got a pinpointer I know I'm gonna find me a chunky gold nugget here we go boy
Could the spiral mark near the tip of the first dropped Minie bullet have been evidence it was removed from a loaded barrel with a tool sometimes referred to as a 'worm' due to a misfire from a dud charge?
The type one gold dollar is amazing! I would place it on the grading scale at a XF40 or if your lucky a XF45 (though the price difference is 5 dollars) so the full price is 260 USD or 265 USD. I am not a certified coin grader but I have read up on grading standards and do research on every coin I “appraise”. Unfortunately the three cent piece would not get a straight grade due to the crack so it would not have a straightforward price.
Thanks for the info! And even beyond the price of it the historical value is priceless to us being off of the Oregon Trail
