Pahole - Warabi - Hō‘i‘o - Wild Fiddlehead Fern Shoots - Foraged in Hawai’i with Kimi Werner

- Kimi Werner and her sister Christy grew up eating pohole shoots often prepared by their mom and grandma. The sisters return to their childhood nostalgia by foraging for these fern shoots with their kids in tow. Kimi takes her half of their harvest and attempts to make pohole salad, a dish her grandma would often make, but one that Kimi has yet to make herself. It’s a flavor filled journey back to her roots!

😂😂
My favourite repeat saying is... “these are not my dogs 😁” lol.
They’re lucky they get to come visit tho.
Omg Buddy is too cute, at 4:57 he is sharing with “not our dog”. This just melts my heart!

We have these fern in Thailand as well. The most famous dish for us is called “Yum Phak Kood” We would Blanch them in boiling water (add salt) for a couple minute and soak them in cold water. Then we drained them and make a salad with boils shrimps, Crush peanuts and Thai desssing (consisted of: 1 tbsp Thai chilli paste *not curry paste* , 2 tbsp coconut milk, limes, fish sauce, palm sugar, a couple of chopped bird eye chilis, and sliced red onion) give it a try if you can. It’s sooo yummy!
Ps. If you feel fancy you can add toasted coconut flakes and crispy fried shallots as a topping.
It’s fantastic!
We make it similarly in North East India, its my fav salad
Buddy in the background minding his business 😂😂😂♥️
As da kine bebes you like bebesit… they eat any kine! Like veggies. Love it! Gotta get um started when they young like this with vegetables and fruits in their natural form.
I can’t wait to try this recipe! I going in the bushes tomorrow pick ho’i’o and I get my sour poi ready. I like to throw in some fish cake, opihi or dried cuddle fish too in mines. But I love cilantro and never did try um like that. I going now. Mahalo Tita for sharing these alohaful recipes with us and your beautiful ohana with us.
As a mom there is nothing better than following in our mother's and grandmother's footsteps in passing on skills like these. ❤
Also my daughter received the book The Girl Who Rode a Shark" for christmas and we really enjoyed your chapter!
I loved this video so much.Buddy cracked me up when he was feeding the 🐕 dog .he is so sweet.I wish I could hug and squeeze him.Blessings to all of you .
I guess I’ll be buying the ergo baby carrier 😂 This Ergo carrier has been on the top of my list. I rested my search and had bought some Pahole from the farmers market. Also never made and thankfully came across your video, so simple to make and onolicous! Now I know how to make it right and know what carrier I want. Haha. Mahalos! 🌺
,Love you Kimi
I love foraging for these! My favorite preparation is sautéing them in a bit of oil, garlic and a bit of oyster sauce and sometimes, I add crunchy pork rinds to it. If you want the pork rinds to stay crunchy, crumble on top at the end before serving. Otherwise, I blanch them and toss them in a spicy, sesame dressing with crushed peanuts.
The only thing better than the food is the scenery and sweet Buddy 💗💗💗
Buddy is having the truest childhood a human being could ask for!!!
Diaplasium esculentum!! Very neat! That's a cool one.
Aloha Kimi, you making me homesick for Maui. We used to pick those on the side of the road halfway to Hana, and I had a nice patch growing on my property up in Kula above Rice Park. We just parboil them for maybe a minute at most then chill right away. Cut them up into about 2 inch pieces and toss with sliced onions, tomatoes, dried ebi, and kiri kombu. Sea salt, a little rice vinegar, shoyu, and sesame oil. Sliced kamaboko optional. That's about it. Pretty much the same recipe as you but we were making it over 25 years ago. Must be Maui style. Aloha a hui hou!
PS. I still get my tee shirt you autographed. 8-)
We call these pikopiko in our country, native fern crozier/shoots. the native maori people ferment them with mussels which make a delicious probiotic. It's very healing for hangovers also I attest.lol
Not my dog and you're not my dog always makes me laugh so much🤣 ... they know the right place, where they get tasty snacks, a ride to the beach ... love ... smart dogs .... and dear Buddy 🥰... he is doing so well ... the salad looks delicious Kimmi.🍀💋
