- Is spending almost the equivalent to a monthly mortage payment (at least a couple years ago) on six hockey cards a good investment? Probably not, but lets find out just how bad it is! Opening and reviewing a box of 21-22 The Cup hockey cards from Upper Deck. I sadly call my shot pretty well on this one in a bad way. Overall these cards don't even come close to feeling "premium" enough to justify the insane price. A fair price is along the lines of $700ish Canadian dollars. Then you'd at least have a snowballs chance of coming close to getting your monies worth. Unbelievably, this is a product that UD personel thinks should be opened "by the case." So either they think hockey card collectors are all trust fund kids or tech billionaires who can afford a $6000+ dollar case of cards to get "the full experience," or this product is only for the cancer of the hobby, breaking. Not sure I'm willing to pay more than $200 a card for a $30 card. I honestly would rather go on an epic $1500 weekend drinking bender in Vegas. Kinda feels like that would be more responsible, and better value for the money.

You would think for $200/ card they would have a different picture of the player on the back, when upper deck first came out, for all sports what made them unique and frankly changed the industry was the fact that the picture on the back was completely different and those only cost 20 cents
It would cost you less to have a custom card made out of the Makar jersey patch, book flights/hotel/tickets to watch a live game and have him personally sign it than what this box cost you!
You get outta here with your logic and financial reasoning. That kind of sane rational thinking is not what this hobby is about!
Upper Deck should be ashamed of themselves for what they have done to the Cup. $1200 for about $200 in cards. The cards are apparently hand packaged and they come damaged and miss stamped. 2 worthless base cards, a manufactured name plate, 2 cards from players not in the league anymore and the best card has a massive ding in the corner. I'm very sorry you received such a shit box but this seems to be the norm from all the breaks I've watched. I will never buy this product and I'm grateful for you spending the money and showing everyone the pile of garbage Upper Deck has released
all UD product is a waste if you think about it. All these cards come from one company and somehow they made it worth money. It's a bunch of cardboards with picture on it, they are genius lol
Awesome video thanks for taking a bullet for us, sucks about the Makar corner and the Mahovlich double stamp (which i think reads 06/15) but don't bother sending either of them back in, they are more valuable than whatever Artifacts card they'll send you back to replace em
Wow just wow. I cant believe the condition of thoughs cards. Like you said, most people will be luckly to even open one of these and they send out cards in that condition. I hope you at least contacted them, that's not acceptable. Nice presentation though, enjoyed the vid thank you!
The quality control on a "premium" product like that is insane. That leafs one is just poorly stamped and the only card of any real value is damaged. I'd be complaining to UD for sure after spending that type of money
Rough box but great video. That Makar is a nice card, just too bad the corner is a mess.

damage sucks. makes me question if its produced across the world gathering them in one massive stack than being shipped to another factory for boxing. someone was saying upper deck had production issues since redemption's were at an all time high so they can print them at later date.. for a $1200 product there shouldn't be any damage... imagine buying luxury clothing & there is a cut missing or stained... let alone an automaker selling a damaged car.
Send that makar back, upper deck is a joke anymore. Pay so muchand get a pile of damaged crap. I'm done with this hobby! One company having a monopoly over the industry has completely ruined the hobby! Thanks for nothing upper deck
i spent 6k last year , my first and last year .. i got nothing in return .. maybe 200-500 in cards so lost over 5k in cash ..im done as well .. its just not worth it
This product should only have HOF, Future HOF and the top Rookies and Stars in the league. You shouldn't pull curtain jerkers like that
I've been watching a crazy amount of The Cup breaks... VERY VERY UNDERWHELMING for the price tag man. I want to get a box, but damn man, it's like you KNOW it's putting your cash in your fireplace... SMH.
Send them back. No excuse for quality control issues with these cards.

I'd look at having them replace it. Agree it should be between $700-900 where a lot of the hype is gone from 90% of the rookie class

The Makar would be such a sweet card. Sorry for the bad luck with the corner. Sadly I doubt you would get a card of equal or better value (name) I’m on the fence about this product; I want to open it, but I also want my family to eat. 😂
If they ever respond to their QA email we will see. This will be the most expensive card I ever send in so it's out of sheer curiosity to see what they actually do at this point

this used to be one of my bucket list goals before I get out of the hobby for the second time. Fuck that though, we all knew it was a gamble buying boxes. You always get screwed for the most part. This is just exceptionally bad though. So this is off my bucket list I would rather spend $1000 on a big mix of boxes that I can afford that give me a better chance. I recently just killed it with three boxes of the latest artifacts and I hit a patch/tag card. askari’s 4/5. as if that wasn’t enough, I also got a Carter Hart treasured swatches auto /25. It’s very rare that you come out ahead, but I’ve managed to be lucky enough in the past five years to do it three or four times.
Checking it off the bucket list was my main reason for doing it. Now that I've done it I highly doubt I'll be bothering with future years.

Really nice Makar. Too bad about the shape of it. Would it be better if you knew that the damage was created by Cale himself though? Like there's a video of him somewhere dropping the entire stack of signed cards on the floor and then when he tried to pick it up he ended up kicking it across the floor?
That would at least be funny and a good story. Although that still doesn't absolve Upper Deck for hand packaging these and not noticing it.
@@dusterdonnybrook Agreed. Maybe Upper Deck should work card damage into the card. Have a little sticker "Cale Makar Damaged Card" to denote that he's the one that f'd up the card. When I work at Upper Deck one day I'll be sure to get this going.

I would be ecstatic if I got that damaged makar!! UD will literally give you a card from your three player list guaranteed. It’s third-year Cale anyway. If you requested, I’m pretty sure they would flip you a Cale rc
Lol. It's priced at double what it should be. The quality is also crap. Even at half that price you should get multiple auto cards with huge patches.
That’s a tough call on the Makar. Definitely BS that the corner is that fricked. I doubt they could replace it outright but it may be worth contacting UD and sending them pics to see what their response is. Either way great video, somewhat of a rough break considering the two players that aren’t currently in the league. At least you can say you got to open it!
I feel like I exposed everything wrong with this set. It's so late that a bunch of players aren't in the league anymore. Even though it's 6 cards only 3 will have real value. Even being hand packed UD can't get the QC right.

Well if I am packing cards for a super premium product and see a cracked card and care about my customers that one is not going in a tin.

I wish Exquisite was still its own set. Problem is UD knows that sticking the cards in other sets does too much to make them actually desirable that they'll never take them out.

I like to wait till foolish people break these. Then I buy the cards off them for $5-$30. But they had the fun of gambling the money away. So a win win.

Though it's entirely possible a player could drop a card, there is no excuse for a card this damaged making it into a hand packed $1200 product.

It was $1500 CAD for 20-21, but the hits definitely seemed better for some reason.

Reasons why UD products are terrible. No packaging control. I’ve always recommended leaf products. Better QC. Better bang for the buck.
One day I'll bite the bullet and grab some leaf cards. They also crush it on the Legend content. Just wish they were able to get more on card autos.
All of that is packaging and still the worst corner Ive ever seen oulled out of a pack. I cringe everytime somebody breaks one of these 600-1000 dollar boxes and have to push down on the cards to pull them out. Ughhhh
These cards should all come pre sealed in heavy cases. Its insane you need to press down on them to get them out. It's insane you need to even handle the card at all given the cost/card. Its supposed to be an elite product but it comes in the packaging of a videogame.
And hilariously if they used simpler packaging they could reduce the cost of the product... as if they would.

Yes, to be fair I should say that in all the breaks I watched before opening mine I didn't see any QC issues as horrible as mine. Still sucks that it happens at all but at least it's not like it's every box.
It's really not worth buying and ripping packs. You're definitely better off buying single cards online. It's really damn shame to collect that way, though. Ripping packs used to ge fun when I was kid. As adult its still fun till it's over, and you realize you just threw most of your hard earned money away. I've never tried to profit from sports cards, but when you pay a ridiculous amount of money, it would at least be nice to know you either break even or came out on top.

Upper Deck is total Garbage now, They've basically ruined the hobby with overpriced JUNK..... Their top of the line product... with DAMAGED & MIS-STAMPED Cards is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE ..... I WOULD NEVER BUY THIS PRODUCT! Even if I had money to burn...... Just Ridiculous!!!!
