Daves Dome, Backpackers Camp Table And Camo Panels

  • Ultra light backpackers often use tents with no floors to save weight. Most are extremely expensive but I may have found a cheap alternative, a golf cart cover! This is my first test and I also show my backpacking table that also doubles as a pack stiffener. I also show an experimental camo panel for stealth in the woods. It's a lightweight easy to carry idea for viewing wildlife, hiding from people or maybe even trying to photograph Bigfoot.

Thanks Dave and Nick! I appreciate that you guys DON’T test everything first then do the video after you get it perfected. I like watching you guys try things that are a bit unorthodox. Outdoors people know that creativity is a skill that needs to be nurtured and practiced. I love watching and learning from the two of you.

The two biggest reasons you are the best outdoor channel on CZcams:
    1. Knowledge and the skills to make and modify your own gear.
    2. You aren’t selling out to the industry.
Please keep it up Dave. Such great content.

Thanks Dave, it's always a great start to a day when you publish a new video. :) I expect this video to be similar in at least some ways, to the "flat head" shelter design that showed and you spoke about a while back, and the top/junction point of that was very ingenious. I suspect that "Flat Head" is a cool and knowledgeable guy, and one of the people that helped to inspire the creation of your nickname. :) I look forward to watching the video later, and it was so nice to see a new video from you. _John_

Good stuff Dave and Nick ! Nature does not have straight edges, so they stand out. The army and marines have a hasty hooch set up for their tent. It utilizes the rainfly ( like your golf cart cover) , the bungee take down rods and webbing. The webbing is connected at center and crisscrosses, at the end of the webbing is a loop for the rods. You layout the webbing on the ground, stick a rod in one loop then bend the rod up and connect to other end of webbing. set up 2 or 3 rods, drape over the cover and stake it down. You could even create a complete floor with loops for the rods instead. Thanks for the video, it was good fun and entertaining. Looking forward to the next one.

Bring collapsible fiberglass tent supports from home. They don't weight much. Stick their ends in the dirt at right angles and you have your dome. Or...take the time to find flexible saplings/branches to form a small wikiup. The cart cover is a really good idea. In addition...When I used to go out and spend many hours on a ground deer stand, I had a large golf umbrella that I spray painted with camo paint. I would open it in front of me as a blind, or sometimes just as a wind break which really helped. My hunting buddy used to say it made me vanish. A few times it rained and it really made the day tolerable. Keep those fun videos coming!

I love your equipment on the cheap ideas. Not all of us have much money. 2nd hand dome-tents can be picked up for peanuts, or free and have a dome shaped, hopefully waterproof, flysheet and poles to suit.
I have been carrying a length of mesh fabric in atac fg camo, which makes a good camouflage hide in spring, summer and autumn. A bird photographing friend saw it and asked me to get him one. He's been using it since. I generally just put it over my head, to break the outline.

Hey guys. I think that your table is a great idea. It can also be a cutting board. In regards to your camo panel, the key to blending in is to incorporate nature somehow. Military snipers use natural grass, twigs etc in their ghilli suits. You can also sit behind a bush or trees/branches for the 3-D cover (as pointed out by Nick's keen observation). The snipers often use a Sniper Veil. It's a large piece of mesh that comes both in a solid colour and in camo. Mesh has texture and also allows natural light/shadows, and colour to penetrate. It also allows you to attach local foliage. There's also another material called Monarch Mesh. It has a much larger weave often used for carrying Duck decoys. You can add some to your existing panel so that you can attach Burlap strands. Snipers sew/glue fish net to their uniforms and tie on individual strands of Burlap and material (as pointed out in the Special Features of the movie Shooter with Mark Wahlberg). You can dye Burlap with clothing dye, then combine several colours together to help blend with your environment. They also make synthetic Burlap now. I hope this helps. Another great video. Keep up the good work fellas. :)

Fun in the woods on the cheap! A walking pole could hold up some slack. I've even used my axe to give me more room under a tarp. If it gets windy you could roll up any remaining slack material and pin it with sewing clips. Thanks for the ideas and keeping it real!

Great idea Dave. You just needed more branches bent over like a wigwam shape. If you'd had that, the golf cart cover would have worked very well. Another possibility is if you had foldable poles from an old dome tent, they could be utilized in the same manner. They'd be light and quite packable. Your camo panels are also a great idea as long as they are draped to break up the rectangle shape of the panel itself. Love all the ideas you come up with. I trust the weatherman was right and you stayed dry all night long.

I will never understand for the life of me why these sheath makers don't change that. If there's one thing I learned from Uncle Bill Martino years ago on Bladeforums... Watch how you draw and resheathe, watch where you put your fingers and make sure the sheath fits. Dave, we had creek front with a huge willow thicket . By clearing a circle about 6 feet we had a dome. The slash from ckearing were cross braces once we bent in the live willows and tied them in the center. Your concept works. As you said, a huge tarp, we used a 12 foot tarp for a low 6 foot circle. We used ours for a bush sauna.

Hi Dave & Nick thanks for another great video.
I would like to make a suggestion if I may about your camouflage blanket?
You can buy small patches that contain a magnet that can be sewn on or into fabric you could stitch one in each corner of the blanket and a few others dotted randomly around then add a couple of magnets or metal buttons to your clothing, doo rag, hat, cuffs pockets ect then when you throw over the blanket (instead of holding it) it will stick to you and you can use your fingers/ hands, knees and feet ect to distort the fabric and break up the shape/pattern you might even be able to walk or move around without being seen.
Hope that made sense keep up the good work I look forward to seeing what you guys come up with 😃👍.

So Dave here is a thought you know the elelastc tye poles that most tents come with right so the concept is to take something like them and make a type of connecters for the top yo connect all together be it 3 or 4 posts then slide the golf cart cover over. Just a thought. Love the videos with each we all can learn something new I know I Have and I was Brought up camping. first time out was with Grandparents and Parents with with family friends 3 different family all together and an old type giant army tent took 4 men to put it up. Cool use of a golf cart cover. Several years ago I used a bunch of big saplings to make a blind out of back in my woods.
I left them tied together and over the years they've kept the dome shape and now I have an excellent blind that the deer don't notice at all.

I enjoyed your off the cuff review of the golf cart cover which has given me impetus to try out a structure with a spare box shaped green cover I have for garden furniture, it has eyelets and cord to tighten it at the base. Like with another bent tree shelter you filmed a while back, I recall you used 3 small trees bent into shape, but I suppose maybe it it easier to cut green sticks to stab into the ground and fashion to a structure, but I appreciate your approach to saving saplings. Great job as ever, Enjoyed Nick trying to locate you camouflaged in the bush. I do hope you persevere with this design in the future. Entertaining and fun as ever Thank you David 👍😎

GOOD TO SEE YOU TWO AGAIN. A while back I told you about 5X magnifying lens by TRUE UTILITY. the lens is good and works but the hardware will fall apart. The screw came out and is lost, the lens is held in the housing with a flat ring like a washer, well it came apart and will not reset into the housing. Oh well back to the drawing board. I'll just stick to a regular jewelers loupe. The little peanut cig lighter is holding its own.

The ripstop can be found in the extra wide width sometimes, so a single ’yard’ is a bigger piece..
I live in New England, and have virtually every type of environment except desert stuff around here, so it’s a challenge to find a one size fits all camo pattern..
But as always, 99 times out of 100, people won’t see you, because they’re not LOOKING for you.. especially if they’re not familiar with hunting type concepts..
I’ve found those pop up tent style blinds in the woods a few times and it’s not a hunting allowed area.. 🤷‍♀️
I wondered how many people walked in the vicinity and never saw them 🤔
Thanks for sharing as usual my friend!
      Hope you’re doing well!

Very cool to hear that Ruth! This is my first time experimenting with this stuff so there's lots more to learn. I may go bigger but for now I'm experimenting with panels small enough to fit in cargo pants pockets.

@@Reallybigmonkey1 .. pocket size is definitely better, the ripstop nylon is so lightweight that a larger piece is still easy to fit in a pocket..
I have a extra wide ripstop nylon in the new multi cam pattern.. it’s wicked nice 😬
And it folds up into a tiny square..
I have a heavier canvas type fabric in a European camo pattern, but it’s just too bulky for something little.. I’m hoping to make it into a more traditional tarp configuration.. 🤞🤞 lol .. I’m missing a part of my HD sewing machine, so I’ll keep you posted on that one too 🤪 lol

☝️Now... 🤔 Is it me the only guy in the planet that decided to not wraph and fold all full fabric/cloth peaces of gear anylonger... and instead started rolling and bending ( like civil war sodiers used to ) and attach it over the backpack...?
    1. To keep it outside the ruck sack space in case of being wet and dirty.
    2. To prolong the hammok, tent, floor, tarp etc. lifetime utility, preventing the "map pocking holes" damages.
    3. To pack and unpack easier.
    4. To live room inside the backpack for other peaces of gear, or even using an smaller rucksack...

Great thought provoking video, Dave. My provoked thought, what about pop up tent poles? They're lite weight and compact when taken down. Easy to carry. Some are made with a center piece, the poles slip into with a center hook for the tent center loop to hang from. Or, since your better than me with a sewing machine, make a cloth " X" pattern to slip the poles through. That would hold them in the right position. Stake them in a dome shape. Pull the cover over with the zipper between poles, and stake it down. Really like the table & the camo panel. Agree with Nick on irregular shape. Maybe lay down, like a log? Lower profile? All out of provoked thoughts.lol. See you in the next one.☺
