I still have no clue why they kept the name Triangle Strategy when "Salt-Iron Wars" was probably the most repeated phrase in the entire game script.

    • @TajinQ

Either because the name stands out more due to being so weird, or because it sounds better from the perspective of a japanese audience.

    • @lanonyme-vod8090

Well if they ever intend to make a new game, with a new story and characters, the name would have been too specific for the series to evolve
To have a vague name related to the concept or gameplay is not that bad, it allows some more freedom for next entries

Okaaay, so the first song _is_ the opening title theme for the game, but it only plays _after_ you beat the game. Before that, it played a more instrumental version of the same theme. And I have to say, I have never heard the second half of the song with all the crazy guitars and everything else, as it was the title screen music and I wanted to get on with the game, but I'm just awestruck that I have missed _that_ for so long on a game I've put more than 200 hours into. You find the weirdest places to learn new things. But anyway, the second theme is my personal favorite battle theme in the game (and I imagine that's the case for a lot of TS players). It's a special boss theme that only plays in what are probably the most emotionally climactic fights in the game, and you can kind of hear that with the more somber mood. It made the bosses feel that much more impactful, especially since the theme (with the piano intro) only starts playing once you attack the boss and the opposing sides give their big speeches about their convictions. Not to mention that it's dark out in the game when this plays, so that cool, drifting feeling you mentioned accompanies the rush of a grand raid in the biting winds of night. It's a slight departure from the game's more bombastic battle themes, but it really works for capturing the high stakes. Speaking of bombastic, the composer, Akira Senju, is probably most famous for his work on a certain anime called Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. You can definitely hear his very dramatic, heavy musical style in the show's soundtrack in the second half, and there are certain battle themes in this game that made me go "oh yeah, this screams Fullmetal Alchemist so freaking much."
Triangle Strategy's story really hit me in a way not many games do. You basically control a small somewhat independent territory that is caught in the middle of several warring powers, and the heroes are frequently forced to choose between making the moral choices and choices that allow their territory to survive. It's a central mechanic of the game aside from the tactical fights, as everyone votes on a course of action and you actually have to convince your allies to support your decision through pragmatic/ethical arguments. And even after you've committed to a decision and the consequences play out, you're still left with lingering doubts on whether you made a good choice several chapters later. It's definitely a game that puts your values to the test, which is why it left such a profound impression on me, even years later.

Triangle Strategy is the best turn based strategy game i've played in YEARS, the last one i thoroughly enjoyed in all aspects was Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn, nothing has come close since then. Triangle Strategy was such a welcome title to me for that reason. everything about it was excellent and after completing the story and getting the new main theme, even after all those hours it still managed to blow me away again, such a fantastic song.

Such an amazing hidden gem from Square. Same artstyle as Octopath, from essentially half the team behind Octopath, recreating a tactical RPG in the style of Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre
The composer was really well known for his work on the anime Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (FMA being a manga published by... Square Enix I think?)
Also, great choice of intro music, Colony 9 gets in your mind and never leaves 😎
Edit : Funny enough, you mentioned the similarities with Bravely Default artstyle, the character designer for this game, Naoki Ikushima, worked on both Bravely and Octopath series (these three are all from Team Asano, a dev team from SQEX)

What makes Song of Triangle Strategy so cool is that it is an arrangement of the main theme, not the actual main theme. The actual theme is purely orchestral, in a style akin to the other track in this video. It's actually a really nice track and I wish Jesse had heard it before this one for the full reaction.
You go through the entire game hearing the main theme and it's only after the true/secret ending that you get to hear this amazing vocal/rock remix of it. I was watching the credits mouth agape as this was playing. Song of Triangle Strategy then replaces the regular main theme in the title screen. Best reward ever for getting a true ending.

  • @legendairenic6247

Bro no way, so glad people are acknowledging this game and how good it is.
''Song of Triangle Strategy'' was used as promo music for the game, a single you could buy on most platforms. In the game, it replaces the main title theme, ''Our Path'', when you complete all the game's endings. The main title theme is already great, but having an anime opening-esque song for being dedicated to the game is an amazing reward.
Combat Destiny is one of the best songs on the OST and the only song to feature electric guitars as instruments. It is used for, not neccessarily climax moments for the story but rather for some of the main characters's climax moments. I always remember these 2 pieces of dialogue because they play right as the music starts or it's already going
''Frederica... Your existence sullies the Aesfrosti bloodline! But it will be pure again--as soon as I have killed you!''
''Say what you will. I am proud of the blood that runs through my veins! I have found people who love me for who I am. No longer will I let you or anyone else make me afraid!''
    ------
''I struck you down with my own hand... So tell me, who are you, behind that mask?''
''I am Aesfrost's bane. My mask stays on until the last handful of dirt falls on your grave.
Idk if you take request on CZcams, but I'd love if you'd check out more Triangle Strategy music. I would like ''Frederica's Path/Theme'' and ''Until That Day - Frederica's Battle'', they go together. If you can't find the OST on youtube, there's a playlist on Soundcloud that has all the songs individually.

"Carrying us into the promised land"... Well, Destiny plays in one of the endings of the game when (beware, spoilers) the main character stays behind to fight the evil guy and sacrifices himself to buy time to his companions so that they can flee and guide a bunch of people to the continent of their legends. The cool thing about the song it's that you can tell in that opening section that the main character is saying "goodbye", a goodbye filled with sadness but also hope for the future.

Oh man, when this song (of Triangle Strategy) hit in-game it hit hard because it's right after you finish your first playthrough and what was normally a instrumental version of the song playing in the title screen, suddenly gets changed along with the title screen backdrop.
You instantly notices the change in music because of the unusually deep intro to the song and your attention is immediately captivated while you fixate on the slow scrolling new title screen, then the vocals come in and it's the best surprise/reward ever. (+ Triangle = 3 singers?! Genius)
They certainly saved the best for last.

@@wesnohathas1993 Final Fantasy Tactics has been one of my favourite RPG games since childhood and nothing has really satisfied the itch to play another game in that vein until Triangle Strategy. The gameplay, the political intrigue focused story, the music, it hit all the right notes for me. It's not perfect, I definitely have critiques (I'm a voice actor and I found the performances to be a mixed bag, some characters were fantastic and others fell flat which speaks to me of a bad director, also while I liked the idea of branching story trees choices obviously didn't matter as much as it claimed to) but ultimately I got exactly what I was looking for and then some!

A Tactics game is basically like any regular RPG, but with an added movement and positioning strategy added to the combat system. For example, you have team mates and enemies who can either focus on long ranged attacks or close ranges attacks, or are weak against either of them. You make use of the environment to play into your team's strength and off-set their weaknesses, while creating a team that has an advantageous match-up against the enemy you are facing. As you can guess, the combat in Tactics games is very layered and strategic.
Because of this type of type of gameplay where you require a large amount of characters, your team usually consists of expendable NPC's who usually don't have much story to them, and the story instead focuses on the party leaders. Due to the nature of the gameplay, the battles can be quite extensive and take up quite a while to finish compared to your regular RPG.
Final Fantasy Tactics popularized this sub-genre of the RPG genre, and gave the Tactics sub-genre its name, though Nintendo's Fire Emblem is probably the biggest Tactics RPG franchise right now.

  • @hansgretl1787
    @hansgretl1787 Před měsícem +3

Yeah, I would absolutely recommend this game. The biggest criticism this game gets is that it's about 80 % story and 20 % gameplay, treading very closely to a Visual Novel in that way. If you are not bothered by that, I can not recommend this game enough. The worldbuilding is intricate, the characters complex, the themes fascinating and all of it immerses you so well with the choices you make. The music is also amazing, as you can tell.
I would also be down for Fire Emblem Three Houses, which is of the same Strategy RPG genre, but I do remember how you weren't particularly impressed by what you heard from that game. All I can say is that Three Houses is my favorite game of all time, and is yet another masterpiece.

One last comment, triangle strategy has an absolutely gripping story if you're looking for something different from the typical rpg band of heroes. Its a messy web of politics where you can only really trust your closest allies, and yet, you'll have to make uneasy alliances and hard decisions all along the way, hoping to find a way out of all the turmoil

  • @handsoaphandsoap

Triangle Strategy is a top 10 game for me, I fell in love the moment I hit play. It’s both a love letter to strategy RPGs while also containing one of the most compelling political drama in any video game I’ve ever played, I remember playing Fire Emblem: Three Houses sometime after and the entire time I was just thinking about how much of an improvement on the genre Triangle Strategy is in comparison (which granted, Triangle Strategy is pretty much just Square-does-Fire-Emblem but I still far prefer it over Fire Emblem). Mileage will definitely vary though as it’s a very text-heavy game, I read a lot of visual novels so I didn’t mind one bit but I know there’s plenty of players out there that are allergic to text in games so Triangle Strategy is probably not for them.

  • @Huy_YT

The only instance I can remember right now where I hated the games naming convention so much, that I refused to play it on release, despite really liking the demo.
Just because it's a Square Tactics game, they shouldn't have called it Triangle Strategy^^'
That said, in all other metrics than naming it's a fantastic gem of a game. Great OST, beautiful HD-2D artstyle, interesting choices and dilemmas and tight gameplay.
If you like your political drama in a relatively grounded setting, with big choices to make that determine the outcome of the story and you like tactics gameplay, check it out.
It's on the more difficult side of games, but there are difficulty settings to breeze through too :D
Out of Bravely Default, Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy, I would always choose Octopath, because for my taste, out of the 3, it has the best OSTs, gameplay, designs, characters and it brought HD-2D to the scene^-^
If interested, my recommandation would be to start with Octopath 2 :)

  • @finito6818

Square is a company that almost only does RPGs and was built on the success of the Final Fantasy franchise for which the music is one of the big selling point and continued to set the trend and standard of the JRPG culture. They fathered in some of the best composers, in my opinion, like Nobuo Uematsu, Yoko Shinomura, Yasunori Mitsuda, Yasunori Nishiki, etc. When you play a square game, it is normally expected to have good music at least for those who have been playing their games since the 90s when Square was in its prime.
Personally, having played a lot of tactical RPGs and with Square's background in the genre, I was expecting more from this game which felt pretty basic and short which is why the reviews are pretty mid.
Tactical RPGs are RPGs where the battles are done on stages like a castle/forest/mountain/Road/etc with different obstacles/elevations and the floor is divided in a grid, like a chess board, and instead of chess pieces you have characters with different abilities/movement/attacks and you and the enemies take turns to act until you defeat the enemies or complete the objectives. The fights are normally longer and you have to use strategy and be tactical which is why the tracks for these kinda games are normally made for longer loops and normally less intense than the usual JRPGs battle themes.

From my experience, it's an agonizingly slow-paced game. Everything from the cutscenes, to the voting segments, to the battles themselves take ages. Especially on Hard where every chapter is an unrelenting war of attrition with the odds stacked against you from every angle and one false move can doom you to start over from the beginning.

Strategy RPGs are games where, you have a grid-like system (think chess board) and move your characters depending on their turn to attack the enemy. Depending on the game, you either have your turns determined by character speed, each team taking a turn, or moving in real time in response to actions.
Triangle Strategy's review scores are because, it is a good turn-based strategy game, but the more you play it the more shallow the mechanics/story get, so a lot of people in the Strategy RPG community of video games don't have fond feelings for it. It's a game that, really feels like it should be a lot better, so its perceived worse. Music's great because Square though.
Right now, the real gold stars for Strategy RPGs are Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactic Ogre, and Unicorn Overlord, with Fire Emblem being a long-running series of games where they're popular but the community's divided on why they like it, as there are parts that some people in the community love while others hate it.

This was a pretty fun game to play through. Also fairly flawed though. Some battles were kinda poorly balanced and could quickly turn into very tedious and long battles. The writing simply wasn't good enough. Could've used more complexity, but it remained rather shallow because they wanted to offer multiple paths. I think it would've been better if they had just removed that choosing part altogether so they could've gone much crazier in terms of story.
Overal I did enjoy it, but I did feel it was a little lacking in a few aspects and it really dragged towards the end for me.
