Ik sorry kurzgesagt I need to end the video
My father died from dementia four years ago, in his last days he was bed ridden and was unable to eat even when fed, but the worst part was his eyes; He had stopped blinking regularly simply because his body didn't remember how, and when I saw how dry and lifeless his eyes looked i didn't think of it at the time, but it has haunted me ever since.
I just feel so bad for him, all that life only to die in such a horrific, insulting painful way. I just hate existence so much.
🙏❤️😢
why hate life
im sorry for your loss. but this is exactly why im for assisted suicide. my grandpa is in hospice right now from dementia. i really hope my family understands if i take myself out if i start having symptoms. its a horrible way to die and i think its horrible to force people to live that way if they dont want to. my grandma constantly asked my whole family permission to die and everyone said no except for me. i understand wanting to go from pain so i told her i understand and its up to her if she wants to go. i told her i want her to feel better and if she can achieve that by letting go then i dont blame her. i told her i love you ill see you again you can let go if you want. she died that night. and i dont feel guilty for saying yes bc i know shes at peace now.
In USA, you can create a living will that specifies conditions to stop treating you. You can say that if you're not able to feed yourself, the doctors aren't allowed to feed you or hydrate you. I really need to put off making my living will, because you never know when an accident can take away your ability to make this decision in advance of losing your ability to communicate.

If you’re going to lie, don’t do it on the video where people go to fact check you.
According to literally what we just watched, if you kept your eyes open for the full 10 minute video, you’d have risked permanent vision loss, had completely dried out eyes, and would have such searing pain it would send you into shock.
You claim to not even have had bloodshot eyes at the end of it? Seriously dude?
I got lymes disease and a symptom of that was Bell’s palsy, which is when half of your face was paralyzed. It took me 13 minutes to get to the hospital where they treated me, and in that time I didn’t blink my left eye once. Downright the most painful experience I ever had.

Couldnt you just hold it close gently with your hand in the meantime and put eyedrops in 😅
As an Opthalmic Surgical Assistant for the last 22 years, this is all true and even goes deeper than this video. the tear film is made up of water, mucous, and specialized "globulet" cells that help the tear film adhear to the cornea and the cornea is actually like a pump, it draws moisture amd oxygen in on the surface while the innermost layer helps to pump aqueous out to assist in normal intraocular pressure but also assist in keeping the cornea healthy and clear. The surface cells, also known as epithelial cells are one of the fastest regenerating and healing parts of the body only beaten by the epithelial cells of your tounge.

If you don't blink, or don't blink frequently enough: Your cornea can swell. Your cornea doesn't have blood vessels, so it needs oxygen from the tear film, which it gets when you blink. If you simply blink less often, your cornea should still get the oxygen it needs.

What's truly awful is cutting off someone's eye lids was a torture the Plains Indians used to use. Groups like the Comanches were incredible torture artists. I think a lot about the grim past of this area when I'm driving through the dry grasslands of Texas.
What? But the Indians were peaceful nomads. They would never. Everyone knows anglo-settlers have a monopoly on cruelty.
Imagine how much humanity could progress if they pour their creativity into something useful instead of thinking of unthinkable torture methods like these
@@calsela it's probably quite justified and most of our creativity is already poured into useful stuff. Also doesn't torture count as useful? It is useful in some ways...
@@offfire2528 besides, it usually doesn't take a whole lot of time and dedication to create ways to inflict pain. I work for an oculoplastic surgeon who operates on eyelids and he always tells me that the most important part of the body is the the eyelid (I think he’s biased but yeah, it’s important). We have to try and fix eyelids that have been removed, injured, or don’t close all the way. The cornea suffers the most. Sometimes we have to sew the eyelids shut temporarily to save the cornea. Please blink and keep your eyes well lubricated! And don’t sleep with your contacts in!! I’ve seen some crazy stuff
I always wondered what would happen to a person who was tortured by having their eyelids removed...It sounds less than optimal.

I'm pretty certain regular blinks are to moisten the eye and not to take micro-rests, that's microsleep, which is an entirely different phenomenon.
Yes, but doesn't this "micro-sleep" happen when you blink? Might be a much slower blink, like when in school in the morning after not sleeping a lot you blink slowly almost savoring that fraction of a second you get. I've been that tired lol.
This information is available online, why not just go find out for sure? Rather than get into a conversation between two people who are both unsure of the answer.

While trying to wash my eyes with water in order to make them moist again is much less confortable and painful.
Interesting video, 🤔, however, I think the severity of damage that could be caused by not blinking, is greatly underestimated in this video, not blinking for a prolonged period could result in complete destruction of the cornea and conjunctiva, which can pave the way for diseases like trachoma and eventually blindness, or at the very least, cause permanent damage, that would be irreversible, except by surgery.
that is what happened to some patients sometimes when medical staff didn't notice when people in coma, sedated or with some kind of paralisis had their eyes open
How exactly is it underestimated in the video? It talks about all the horrible damage it would do and says that within a very short time that's irreversible, you'd go blind and probably need your eyes removed to prevent infection spreading to your brain. Not exactly downplaying the consequences there.
@@JesmondBeeBee The damage would happen in a much shorter time than this video says.
Makes me wonder what it would be like to have no eyes at all. When I close my eyes, I see black, but having no eyes to relay anything, what would a person perceive?
A blind person once explained it to me like this: Think of what you see outside your vision right now, what it looks like behind you without turning around, that's what they see, literally nothing, no black, no white, no gray, just nothing.
@@damoneldritch7588 but that makes no sense, if you see nothing, then it’s black
@@damoneldritch7588 I'm guessing they weren't born blind, because if they were that's not a very useful statement since they wouldn't even know what black looks like.
Many people can see colorful fractal patterns without vision. People with vision can all see this every time you close your eyes, all day long.
Try to think what it would be like to look at something using your elbow. that is what they see

Hearing the word "blinking" made my eyes blink several times
This video made me hold my eyes open as long as possible to prove that they were lying, alas I was the dumb one
My eyes were watering after 20 seconds, not three minutes. Lol
If you wear properly hydrated contact lenses you'll find yourself going without blinking for very long stretches of time. Because it traps water and keeps your eye from drying out as quickly. Protip for new contact users: Put the contact on the white of your eye. Say you're putting in your right lens. Get it on your finger and get it lined up and your eye held open. Then since its your right eye look to the left, place the contact, and then, without blinking, look to the right. You'll slide the lens under the contact and remove that air bubble that keeps it from sticking. And for the left eye look to the right and then to the left.
The amount of anxiety I had while watching this is astonishing. I'm just gonna keep my eyes closed from now on =/

One time I played a character who died in a play, and I kept my eyes open for more than 8 minutes. I can confirm that this video is accurate. It took my vision about 2 months to recover. I suffer from dry eye to this day.
I have actually gone about an hour without blinking, though I believe the fact I had contacts in and kept moving my eyes helped keep them hydrated enough to not have issues as I had zero discomfort and only blinked out of boredom

obviously this guy has never been stuck in a movie. i would be watching something and so zoned in to whats happening, that my mum or brother would have to remind me to blink. id do this almost every time we watch something and one time, my brother started watching me to see if id do it on my own. he only reminded me after almost an hour as even through the tears i didnt blink. though that only happened like two times. ive never lost a fair staring contest in my 17.5 years of life.
I have been blinking manually this whole video.
One time, I wanted to see how long I could go without blinking. It hurt for a while, eventually getting so bad that I had to hold my eyes open with my fingers. After a short time of doing that though, the pain completely went away. It felt perfectly normal, like I'd been blinking regularly. Has anyone else experienced that? Is there a reason the pain would go away? I finally closed my eyes when I decided that there was no more challenge to it, cuz by that point, not blinking was super easy. While my eyes were closed they started to sting again as I felt the moisture return to my eyeballs. That makes sense to me. But still, if the pain is supposed to get worse, why'd it go away for me? I can't be the only one, right?
i guess your eyes are just built different. it's not really a good thing tho, is it. pain is important, as it tells you to stop what you're doing. imagine if you stabbed ur head and felt no pain. u will still die, just not in pain.
In the video, they literally explained the reasoning behind the pain leaving 🤣
@@lonelyraccoon8076 That was after days though when your eyeballs have died so it wouldn't make sense for it to happen after a few minutes

Why do i get these videos always when im about to sleep?
This explains everything because I had a red eye but not because of stop blinking I started having blur that the day I almost went blind
As a person that did this and is now blind, I can say that yes, this will indeed happen. Wouldn’t recommend.
I have a thing where my eye lids over take water sometimes, and I have once not blinked in 2/3 minutes and nothing bad happened but my eyes were a bit dry feeling, and the water evaporates slower because my fever temp is slightly lower to your normal temp, so it evaporates slightly slower.
